Being Forced To Work Another Shift

Are cops forced to work the graveyard shift or do they choose it?

Both!Every department is different. They all have their own schedules that they created to meet the needs of the department, officers and community. Some departments work 5 days in a row, 9 1/2 hours on 3 different shifts. Some work 4 10s or 11s with 4 days off, 3 shifts. Some work 12s with 3 days on, 2 days off, 2 days on, 3 days off… 2 or 3 shifts. Usually there is some type of policy as well that dictates this process. Throw court and training in that mix and we can have hellish schedules.Generally speaking, rookie cops don't get first dibs on a shift, area, beat, station (call it what you will). They will be assigned as needed by the department. Usually after they complete probabtionary period and gain a year or two of experience they can choose their preferred shift. Many cops love night shift, myself included. I have a partner on my shift who's been on midnights for 9 years by choice. It's a different pace than day shift for sure and tends to be a little crazier in terms of the types of calls you deal with. It makes for some great stories, some great arrests and a very close knit group of guys.

Can you be forced to work past your allocated shift time in a small store?

Right to explain my partner works at a small corner shop with 1-2 staff and a supervisor at any given time. The hours on his rota for today are 12-6, so we planned something for the evening together as we dont get all that much time together as it is due to different shift times and the fact hes had to cover so many hours already due to other members of staff refusing to work weekends and family issues. It got to 5 o clock and another member of staff has had to cancel their shift at short notice due to personal circumstances they would have been doing 6-finish.The manager has rung my partner up to say he has to work until 8pm until someone can come in to cover. So of course i am now completly fuming as we have to cancel our plans. Can the store actually force him to stay that extra couple of hours? There is nothing in the contract as far as i remember about having to stay and cover just because you are already in the store (will be fully checking the entire contract later). It doesnt seem right how certain people can refuse working weekends at all yet he gets forced to work extra hours. Can someone give me an insight into how it works as i have never worked in retail so im not 100% sure. Thanks in advance

My trainer during work forced me to shave during my shift. He escorted me to the bathroom and waited till I finished. Is that legal?

If you worked in the energy industry, especially at a facility where you might need to wear a respirator, you probably wouldn't have been given the option of shaving if you came to a facility with noticeable stubble. They make it clear as to what their expectations are before you arrive, and your not adhering to those expectations results in your being sent home or being "run off" (fired) from a job. At least your trainer provided you with a razor and some lotion, rather than sending you out on your own to purchase the toiletries with your own money and then requiring you to return and perform the task. While he possibly could have handled the situation better, he did make it clear what their expectations for the role are and you can now either adhere to them or find another role. You don't seem to have been able to put this incident in your past, so it would probably be better for you to find another role.  This may not be the last time that you "forget" to shave before work and the next incident could result in a suspension or a termination. Why wait for that to occur when there are plenty of roles out there where you can go unshaven?

Am I forced to work the 5pm to 3am shift?

Am I forced to work the 5pm to 3am shift?
I don't know............ are you?

what you do is TALK to your supervisor/manager in a polite, professional manner about your concerns; then based on that conversation you decide to work as scheduled or quit.....

communication is a GREAT tool.................when used!

Can an employer force you to stay past your shift?

My My bf and I both work together at 2 different jobs, Express and A&F. A&F is our main job, we've been working for over half a year now, but we're only season stockroom associates at Express. We work at Express around 7am to 1pm, sometimes 2 pm, and we normally start A&F at 2pm till 9 or 10pm. There wouldn't be any issues in our scheduling except for the fact that Express tries to make us stay hours past our shift to finish the shipment that we get. They tell us that everyone else says 3 - 4 hours past their shift to help get the work done, but my bf and I can't because we have to get to our other job.

One day we were scheduled at Express from 7 till 2, but we were scheduled at A&F from 2 till 7, so it was a lose-lose situation. We ended up being 15 minutes late to Express but our managers were okay with it. However, later that day Express had called us to tell us that next time we have to stay until the work is done because it's not fair that we get to leave and everyone else stays. We tried to tell them we had to get to our other job but they didn't care and kept saying that we need to stay. I believe that if they want us to stay 3 - 4 hours past our shift, then they should add 3 - 4 hours to our schedule, otherwise I am allowed to leave when my shift is up.
But I just want to know, are the managers allowed to force us to stay past our shift? Especially if we have to go somewhere else? They were very rude about it too, so since this is my on-the-side season job, i won't be with them for too much longer. It's too much drama to explain "I HAVE to go."

Are people who are forced to work the night shift more intelligent than people who work a "regular" schedule?

You could probably find actual data on this, but one can assume an answer of absolutely not. One notes that (a) staying up late is correlated with higher IQ, and (b) staying up late over time is correlated with increasing knowledge, and if that was all one took into account, it might lead one to answer in the affirmative. However, being *forced* to work night shift is (a) associated with being in the sort of low-brain occupation where night shifts are common, (b) will not generally lead to greater knowledge because most of those low-end jobs involve repetitive rather than creative/exploratory work, and (c) excludes those people who are doing night shifts because it allows them to spend all their time thinking, on the internet and/or reading textbooks, because in general those people weren't *forced* onto the night shift, they took it by choice.

Can a 16 year old be mandated, or forced to work over their scheduled shift in the state of Ohio?

My 16year-old friend is a PRN at a retirement home and she works in the assisted living department. Recently, a couple of her coworkers quit, and the last three times she's worked (her shifts are from 6:30a to 2:30p/ 8 hours, she has been forced into staying an extra 4 hours over her scheduled time slot until 6:30p. This place is notorious for breaking laws across the board, including not putting residents to bed and not allowing workers breaks, which my friend directly told me is true. So my question is whether or not they can legally mandate her. I've looked on the DoL websites, but found no direct answers about this topic. I saw where a 16 year old isn't restricted to hours worked in a week, but my brother's girlfriend used to work at this same location, and she said they tried to mandate her for the same job, but she said they couldn't because she was a minor. Any help would be appreciated no matter which way the answer points. Thank you in advance for anyone who reads this.

Also, do the circumstances change If this causes her to go over 40 hours in a week, or does she just get paid for overtime?

My RMG at TCS is forcing me to work in night shifts for the ITIS project. I told him I can't work in shifts because my parents are not allowing it. Now he is forcing me to work in night shifts or resign. What should I do?

Even one of my friend was in almost similar situation one year back. I will share his experience hope that works for you too.He was released from a project and as procedure started reporting to the RMG. For almost one month he didn’t received any call from any project. And just after one month his RMG started forcing him in some crap project with crap technology. He refused but he keeps on threatening him like the way RMG is doing with you. After around two weeks RMG blocked his Mail and Ultimatix access. My friend was too much terrified after that, But I advised him not to worry and just to go and meet HEAD RMG Mr. ABC of that region(The one who is lead of all RMG’s of that region and is a very very senior person in TCS)He went to his office , met him and narrated the whole incident. Even told him the exact line what my friends RMG told him ”I will make sure that you are out of TCS”.Luckily his RMG was in that office that day , ABC sir called RMG in his cabin and asked my friend to wait outside some time. And after 10 min RMG came outside and said your mail and ultimatix will start by EOD today and please let me know which technology project you want.So summing up I would like to say, without any hesitation go and meet Senior person of your location or even mail. Senior management people are too too good , they listen you , they understand you and more important they respect you.P.S. Even ABC sir told my friend that as long as you are in this organisation and if some one threatens you or exploits you in any situation , you can come directly to me without any hesitation.I would like to say that what TCS is today , is because of awesome people like Mr ABC.

People who work 2nd shift, what is your sleep schedule like and do you like working second shift?

I work second shift that includes the whole weekend. I hate it. I’m trying to find another job. After working 9 to 5 in an office environment for most of my working years, then getting laid off and being forced into the service industry, I’ve been forced to work crappy schedules. The only good thing about is that I get to sleep in. But I literally have no social life. Can’t wait to find a 9 to 5 again!
