You can write short stories, novels and poetry without an English or Creative Writing degree.  The positive of majoring in English is that you actually read a lot of great writers and learn how to analyze their writing. But that process doesn't necessarily empower you to be able to write a great novel - but rather to be a critic. Literary criticism is a useful skill, especially in editing. As your teachers may have already told you, writing is a process - write, read, edit, repeat...then publish.A lot of young people go into higher education with a lofty goal of become someone who creates creative works that an audience will love and for which they will pay real money. Many of them attend class, do their homework, then go out and have fun - keeping in their heads that they will create a great work when they graduate.Then they graduate - and they realize they wasted a whole lot of valuable time during those four years when they should have been practicing their art AND attending class. A2AIn my opinion, and from what I did during my MBA, one needs to read at least two newspapers regularly- one general and one business.It does not have to be the print version. You may very well install the app and go ahead but regularity is sacrosanct.I used to read Mint for business and Hindustan times for general news. You can also install inshorts or knappily for general news bytes. Some of my batch mates subscribed to economist too.Other good business newspapers are economic times, financial times ( especially for stock market enthusiasts) and Hindu business line.

The English degree will be helpful with grammar and punctuation (necessary to produce a marketable product) and you will read tons of books (or at least the Cliff notes for them) so you will become familiar with poetic language and rhythm, symbolism, maintaining a theme, expressing ideas in action and characterization, plotting, etc. However, much of your class effort will be aimed at explication of the themes, symbolism and writing styles of other eras. You will have an inclination to “purple prose”, prolixity and pomposity (this answer being an example).You will discover at the end of your four to ten years of undergraduate study that you will be as unprepared to write as you were before college.So, paralleling your study of arcane tomes, you will need to do the following:Get in the habit of writing a little each day even if it is gibberish.Take creative writing classes, as many as possible from as many different teachers as possible. But remember the teachers are failed writers.Read books about “popular” writing. Ditto.Take journalism classes to help you pare down your word count.Read Hemingway.Read Stephen King.Read Lee Childs.Read popular thrillers, romances, fantasy, mystery, westerns.Become an observer.
