I have a satin finish paint on my car. I use the store brand spray paint that Ace Hardware sells. Here is what my car looks like. Satin finishes hide small imperfections well compared to glossy finishes while still giving a more polished look than you would get from a flat finish.I buy the store brand spray paint from Ace hardware. Its a great value for the price. There are a few layers of paint on my car. It started out completely satin finish black but I got bored of that so I primed it up again and went with a color from Ace hardware brand called machine gray. Its actually a gloss enamel but still appears more satin or flat because of the paint below it. Heres what it looks like.The most important feature to look for in a spray paint is what type of nozzle it has. Some spray in a circular cone shaped mist which I find more difficult to use. I always take the cap off to be sure I am buying something with a straight line coverage type of spray pattern. See the picture. You will need lots of dropcloth plastic, blue masking tape razor blades body filler and tools to apply it sandpaper and respirator with new cartridges and if you are a girl protective stuff for your hair like coverings because the stuff you use is filthy and drains all the moisture out of your hair if it is not covered. Bodywork materials smell like death in a can and create a major mess. You will not feel well if you skip the safety equipment. Always use safety equipment. You will get CNS damage without it. Probably cancer too. You also need to be out of any wind. A garage is almost always necessary.

DO NOT use spray paint, from spray cans, to paint your car... not even if the car is bare metal and rusting away to pieces. I mean it. Don't do it. Here are just a few reasons:Spray paint is not made to be used at a specific temperature or humidity- they only make only one type which is a compromise everywhere it is used;The nozzle does not have sufficient "spread" to eliminate the inevitable appearance of stripes or spots where the paint is heavier in places and light in others. This makes it "OK" for small areas, perhaps 3" long or so but definitely not good for large areas even if you try and get creative with application;Most users of spray cans don't or can't prepare the surface the way it needs to be done. Again, one can probably get away with poor preparation in a very small area, but not on a complete car;If you have nicks or scratches, the paint does not "fill in" the defects regardless of how many "coats" you might apply. This is a very common error. Paint over a nick or scratch and you'll have a colored defect;Most ready-mixed paint will dry and cure too soft, and trying to force it to become hard by creatively using some tin foil and a sun lamp will usually make it softer yet. Auto paint shops add a hardener that reacts with heat to cure the paint. If hardener was put in a spray can, well, it would harden in the can.Those are just a few reasons, I could provide many more. If your car needs paint there are plenty of discount shops that'll do it far better- and perhaps cheaper- than what you could do with spray cans. That being said, a good, long lasting paint job will cost more than $300.
