Books Like Catcher In The Rye

In the book "The Catcher in the Rye"...?

"Yellow" is an older slang term for "cowardly." In our day, we'd be more likely to say "wussy" (or change the first letter to a P), "wimpy," or "chicken."

Books like the catcher in the rye?

I wanna read more books like, that. Like, books with no major specific plot. Just, stuff happens, If you know what I mean. Maybe about teens, older. Or, young adults and just stuff happens. Maybe bad things keep happening, maybe very depressing stuff. A good book about friends, enemies, realization. With some imagery, foreshadowing, and metaphors. Thanks!

Is "The Catcher in the Rye" a good book?

I'm almost done with my current book. I'm going to read the series of Twilight because my friend let me borrow it and said it was really good. I don't know if I should, or if I should read The Catcher in the Rye. What kind of book is it?

What are some books similar to "The Catcher in the Rye" by J. D. Salinger?

There are many novels out there for YA readers that can be classified as coming-of-age books, much like Catcher in the Rye. Unfortunately, I don’t read a whole lot of YA books but I can suggest a few:For boys, I can suggest “Ostrich” by Matt Greene or "The Universe versus Alex Woods" by Gavin ExtenceFor girls, I can suggest “Campari for Breakfast” by Sara Crowe or “My So-Called Ruined Life” by Melanie Bishop.

What are some books that inspired The Catcher in the Rye?

Salinger is known to have admired and indeed met Ernest Hemingway during WW-II. Salinger was already a published short story writer at the time. For Whom the Bell Tolls with its young protagonist Robert Jordan seems like an influence. I also see an influence of William Faulkner in Salinger. Perhaps Light in August with its very memorable characters. With all that said, Catcher is a very original novel that can't in any way be reduced to its influences. It is probably more influential than influenced.

Why are books like the Great Gatsby and the Catcher in the Rye considered classics?

For the same reason all great books are considered classics: they provide an artfully crafted experience, using rich language, which in many ways mirrors the actual experience of their readers.

What books can you recommend with same theme like Catcher in the Rye?

A much better novel is THE YEARLING, by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. About a boy who grows into a young man when necessity compels him to choose the welfare of his family over his love for his pet yearling deer. Jody experiences rebellion in the face of the hard facts of the adult world, much as Holden does, but without the persistently cloying juvenile attitude Holden exemplifies.
