Broadway Musical Song

What are some good songs from broadway musicals that are good for auditions?

It depends on a lot of things. First are you a girl or a guy? What is your voice range? What are you auditioning for? They might want you to sing a ballad or actually a song with a quick tempo. Generally a good song would be a song not too well known, avoid defying gravity, it would be too hard not to compare you to so many actresses who played elphaba. Avoid the new hit musical that everyone is singing, frozen, Hamilton etc... Try to find a song that fits your voice, obviously. If you know the part you're auditioning for and there is a very high note to teach, pick a song where you can show them you're made for that part.

What would be the title song of the Broadway musical about your life story?

This is for a new Broadway production; not me taking over an existing show, right.?The title for my new on Broadway, musical life story should be An Accidental Life. But since the only song I could find with that title (Teenage Fanclub, 2000) is not my style; I’ll gladly fall back on a different, real big favorite of mine, The Lucky One, for the theme song. A fantasy theme song; not a title song. The Lucky One is already a movie based on a Nichols Sparks book “… filled with tender romance and terrific suspense . . . U.S. Marine Sgt. returns home from his third tour of duty in Iraq with the one thing he believes kept him alive: a photograph of a woman he doesn't even know.” I’m sticking with An Accidental Life as the title to my life story lest anyone confuse the two. lolAnd please keep in mind there are vastly different songs with the title The Lucky One: Logan Staats, Lana Del Rey, Sam Riggs, David Cook, Celldweller, Laura Brannigan, Taylor Swift. But only Alison Krauss and Union Station (2001, written by Robert Lee Castleman) get it right. Sadly, Mr. Castleman doesn’t seem to have his own version on YouTube. The pronouns need to be flipped; effectively changing the perspective from that of a woman losing her lover to that of the lover running away. This gender bending works best if the man sings it with irony and maybe bitterness. I was amazed when I tried this and it made sense. The most salient lyric is the sixth line [with pronouns swapped], “I’d say [I was] lucky ‘cause I know what [I’ve] done”. Not the chorus. For complete lyrics, google LYRICS THE LUCKY ONE ALISON KRAUSS.

Broadway musical...jazzy upbeat songs?

Hi! I am a highschool girl and have a voice on the higher side but still not all that high. I need a song to sing from a broadway musical that isn't too difficult and preferably with a jazzy beat to it other than a ballad. Thankyou!!

Is the song "Defying Gravity" from a Broadway musical?

Yes - it's from Wicked.

What does the song "Blue Wind" mean in the Broadway musical "Spring Awakening".?

Maybe it's because they're so young? They're really only supposed to be children if you think about it, and think about the descriptive words you knew as a child, basic words like colors, numbers, etc. Maybe that's part of it? We describe things more as colors as children? ...Maybe not. That's kind of lame.

And maybe even, Blue is talking about bruises, too? "Blue Wind"? We all know where Ilse stands regarding bruises and abuse, it would especially make sense in that song. Those who have seen/know the show would know why.

I think that the word "bruise" is used as beautifully as it can be throughout the show... it seems metaphorical for "bruises" one gets mostly psychologically.

What Beatles song was taken from the Broadway musical The Music Man?

The song was Till There Was You which was sung by Paul and included on their second British album With The Beatles. The instrumentation was mainly acoustic guitars, and George performs one of his best solos in the recording. They also included the song in their set list in 1963 and 64, most notably in their Royal Command Variety concert appearance, with Paul jokingly announcing before the song that it was by their favourite American group Sophie Tucker, who had earlier recorded it,

Good audition broadway/musical songs for an alto?

Good question! One question: are you more of a lyric alto (i.e. leading lady) or more of a character actress? Deciding that may help narrow down the options a bit. Also, it may be wise to prepare one song that's slightly more modern and one that's slightly more legit. If it were me, I would make my ballad the legit choice.

Good alto ballads:
As Long As He Needs Me (Oliver)*
Someone to Watch Over Me (Oh, Kay! - Gershwin)*
And The World Goes 'Round (Kander and Ebb)
Someone Like You (Jekyll and Hyde)
Don't Cry For Me Argentina (Evita)

Alto upbeat:
All That Jazz (Chicago -- Kander and Ebb)
Don't Rain On My Parade (Funny Girl)
Don't Tell Mama (Cabaret)
If My Friends Could See Me Now (Sweet Charity)
Ladies Who Lunch (Company -- Sondheim)*
I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair (South Pacific)*

Midtempo:
A Trip to the Library (She Loves Me -- slightly more mezzo than alto, but a good mid-tempo song)
Stars and the Moon (Songs for a New World -- Jason Robert Brown -- also slightly mezzo)
You're Getting to Be a Habit with Me (42nd Street -- an easy alto song but not especially impressive)
Adelaide's Lament (Guys and Dolls)*

The asterisks indicate what I think are your best options (taking into account that you're auditioning for WSS), but there are plenty more out there. Good luck!
