How do I earn money by playing chess?

Fun question! I am a professional expert at Headhunting/Recruiting (i.e. Job Placement) so my knowledge of the financial aspects of employment for intellectual work is fairly hard to surpass. For instance, I have placed some of the top inventors in the world (people with over 100 patents) and am pretty aware of the rate of pay/compensation these people receive. Creative intellects can earn quite a good income, in the right profession.I learned to play chess when I was 6, and have held an official “A” rating for about 25 years. I once won $100 in a tournament in 1975, and I was thrilled at the time. However, even top U.S. Champions have reported incomes as low as $13,000 per year, at the height of their abilities. So, my solution to the problem was to transfer my chessplaying skills to another field: Job Placement/Headhunting. In effect, it is my job to make the right career moves for top-level talent seeking great jobs, and for great companies seeking to hire the right people.Every job search I work requires a great deal of thought, planning, analysis and research — much like the game of chess itself. I have learned to sublimate my chessplayer skills within the industry of recruitment, helping both Clients and Candidates make the wisest career ‘moves’ possible. That’s my best answer to this question… but there are other ways to answer as well. For one, anytime a chessplayer capitalizes on his chess skills by starting a successful commercial chess website, organizing commercially successful tournaments, cashing in on celebrity endorsements from chessplayers, or other means of leveraging his/her skill at chess itself, they potentially can reap greater rewards.I think that the idea of “leveraging” is really key to the financial success of a chessplayer, which will generally occur in a different field, that still uses many of the same skills.

Have you ever made money playing or teaching chess? If you did, how did you do it?

I haven’t, and it is pretty hard thing to pull of. Most IM and GM aren’t good enough to make a living playing in tournaments, so they are out there writing books, making videos, giving lessons, and fighting for coaching jobs. Even if you are an amazing teacher, if you don’t have a title, no one is going to pay you very much. This is what your competition looks like: Internet Chess Club teachers$25 can get you an hour with GM from some Eastern European country where that goes a long way. Also, a lot of these players have day jobs, they just do this on the side to make some extra money, trying to turn it career is going to be a lot of hard work.

Should I stop playing chess? Rather than study when I have to, I play many games of chess.

Yes. Quit playing chess. Your comments mirror my personal experience. When I was young and in college I was obsessed with chess. Instead of focusing on my studies I found that escaping into the world of chess allowed me to forget the pressures of the real world. I failed classes because I was playing too much chess and studying the game. Don’t ever let yourself think that being good at chess is important. It’s not. It’s dangerous. Don’t let anyone tell you the game will improve your decision making and analysis skills. There’s nothing you can get from chess that will teach you to live better than any normal world experience you will get by living and expressing yourself to others.Someone once made a famous statement that chess is for men who think they are doing something supremely intellectual when in reality they aren’t contributing anything. Scientists, architects, artists - these people contribute to the world. Chess players don’t. Bobby Fischer at the end of his life said that chess was a horrible game and that when he was young and on the road to the world championship, he was fueled by blind ambition and just wanting to be the best at something.Later in life when I became an art house film maker I was having trouble in my relationship and feeling stress from completing my film. What happened? I fell back into chess and escaped again into this absurd world of narcissistic faux intellectualism, which is what chess encapsulates. As long as I was getting better at the game and acquiring more knowledge I felt like it was worth it. All it did was delay the completion of my film - my dream for myself to be successful in life and express myself - for an entire year.Remember, chess is a game. It’s a useless game no better than Monopoly or Clue. It doesn’t make you an intellectual. It doesn’t allow you to express yourself other than to make your opponent feel shame and defeat. Is that really what you’re after? You’ve got better things to contribute to the world.

Can you play too much chess? What happens if you do?

You’ll end up as fuckn loser!!Yeah!! I’ll tell you my story.I left my job and now a days I’ve been enjoying so much of leisure. And to lit my bore filled days I started playing online chess (Chess.com (online gaming site) )I hopped from rating 900 to 1100, then to 1200 and so it goes. Now, I can beat ELO 1900 player( Not on a regular basis though)I was playing like hell man!! 5–8 hours a day.The first game I play will have my full attention and most probably I won all.In the second game, I may tremble but I’ll win.I was puffed up with over confidence and I ran behind rating playing game after game. This overplaying has ruined everything. I couldn’t concentrate on the game. I even lost to a player of 1000 rating. This trigger my anger. I challenged him for another and I lost. This used to happen on a regular basis. Every time I lost a game with player of 1100 or below my rating used to go down on a huge margin. In order to cover it up, I played more.Yes, I won some but not convincingly. This caused self doubt. Am I really such dumb to lose against 1100 player? Was my question!! And to prove this wrong I played more and the result was ‘ I sucked’.I lost concentration, I rushed on my moves, I couldn’t handle my anger and the game fuckd. So, I deleted the app. After few days, I was back to normal and thought of played a game with CPU level 10.Actually, I WON. Hell yeah!! Peace of mind does it all.In the end, all I would say is ‘Overplaying will put on so much pressure and create self doubts’!!

How can I earn money by playing chess tournaments?

Earning money by playing chess tournaments is not so simple. You have to be a talented chess player. Especially if you want to target big prize, you should be a higher rated player. What is chess rating? If you don’t already know there’s an organization by the name FIDE, that approves all the official tournaments and gives players ratings based on their performance. The base rating is 1000,if you are 1500 you are an average player,if you are 2000 you’re an expert,if you are >2500 you are a Grandmaster.Don’t worry if you are lower rated player (or unrated), you too can participated tournaments and get FIDE rating. This is the brochure of Delhi International Open 2019 tournament (INDIA) for players below 1500 rating conducted on 13 to 16th January, 2019. As you can see the top prize money is Rs.3,01,000/- (3 lakh one thousand rupees only) and the entry fee is Rs.6000/- just add all the remaining expenses like food, accomodation, travelling charges etc.If your goal is to make quick money through chess, you need to carefully select which tournaments to participate based on the cash prize, category of tournament, number of top prize places to be awarded, accomodation, distance from your home-town and analyze the risks involved and get through it. The most important thing of all is you have to assess your level correctly. If you still have any doubts, I’m just at a comment distance…

Why is my 19-year-old son still playing videogames?

My son owns a gaming machine called a 3DS. He has been interested in videogames for most of his life, but I was hoping that as he got older, he might grow out of it. Unfortunately, he is 19 years old now and he still carries his games with him everywhere he goes. I was very surprised to hear that he bought a pokemon game just a few days ago. When I confronted him about the purchase, he said "The game looked fun, and I wanted to play it. So I bought it."

I can understand his interest in pokemon when he was 10 years old, but at 19, it just seems weird to me. I told him the other day that his 3DS was the equivalent of a toddler's pacifier. He took great offense to my comment, no doubt, but I'm afraid it didn't really help him put things into perspective. Do you think my son needs counseling to curb his interests? I just find it odd that he still plays with toys at this age. When I was 19, I was working down at my local bakery for hours on end, earning a living and making a name for myself. My son has a job at our local Subway, but I don't think he cares about it as much as he cares about his game machine. Are there any parenting tips you could give me about this?
