My son is 36 years old and has BPD. He is self-destructive and totally out of control. He won't comply to therapy or medications. It's tearing our family apart. How do we cope with this?
I have BPD, it’s hard to tell if you don’t know. It’s hard to explain and hard to handle. I have given up on a couple of people in the past. Two to be exact. Both are dead. I’ll never give up on anyone ever again, so my advice is this. Be good to yourself, try and understand as much as you can, and keep trying. If you give up and it goes horribly wrong you won’t be able to honestly say at least I was trying. If you tell someone “ok go shoot your self “ , and they do, it’s going to be a long time before you can forgive yourself. If you give up on someone and they wind up dead…Look after yourself but don’t give up. Try and minimise the harm done to others and help them understand what is really happening.Please don’t give up.
In the UK is it legal for an 18 year old to have sex with a 16 year old?
It is legal - but speaking as someone who lost her virginity in that almost exact scenario, the 16 year old needs to consider if they are really ready.I was about 2 weeks short of my 16th birthday (near enough 16!) and I’d been dating the older guy for a few months. He talked me into having sex before I was really ready, and I fell for it because I thought we had a serious thing going.Well, afterwards, pretty soon he broke up with me, and I later heard that he was not only in it (in me, actually) basically for the virginity-taking, but he’d also been sleeping around.So I have regretted that experience for most of my life. I wish I had held off until I was older and when I next had sex (a few months before I turned 18) had been the actual loss of virginity.So if you are the 16 year old, before you do it, consider if it’s something that YOU want to do. And if you’re the 18 year old, make sure you’re not pressuring the younger person into something they are not ready for.
If you are single, bipolar and have been sectioned 3 times under the UK Mental Health Act, what chance do you have of being a normal mother?
I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder I and told I 'should not have' children because of it. And I don't. However I am now completely stable and off meds for years and I wish I had not listened to the 'advice'. I think that it is important to have a network of people that might help in case the person diagnosed with bipolar should get in trouble. Friends and family: before the person decides to have a child there should be at least three people who explicitly express a wish to take care of the child in case the mother should be hospitalized. If it is an option, it would be good if the person lived in a community. I also think that anyone diagnosed with a 'mental illness' should work on having the best self care they can: that means being very regular with getting enough sleep, exercise and a regular eating pattern of healthy foods. I think that if a person has a wish to be a mother she should NOT give up on that wish because of a diagnosis of mental illness.Of course there is a chance that the child will experience problems if the mother should struggle with mood problems or get hospitalized. In my opinion that is no reason to not have the child. Many children grow up under less than perfect circumtances and become wonderful people anyway. We cannot demand that it is guaranteed that the child will grow up under perfect circumstances before it is born. If we did, few children would be born.
Is it wrong if I'm 15 and dating an 18 year old?
If you're in the US, it's not so much wrong as it is illegal. There is no state in the US where you're allowed to date an 18 year old.However, as long as you don't have sex (and the 18 year old doesn't touch you down there), there's really nothing they could lock you up for doing.But it's best to stay on the right side of the law and wait another year (or 3 if you're in a 18 AOC state)
Can an 18 year old be forced into a mental hospital?
My friend has a granddaughter that has depression and when she was 16 she used to talk about cutting herself and commiting suicide, so my friend got her into therapy and she was put on an anti-depressant. She just turned 18 this month and my friend walked in on her cutting her arms. This is the first time that she has ever hurt herself. She also talks about suicide. We've all been keeping a good eye on her except for that few minutes she was cutting herself. Can she be forced into a mental hospital against her will? Her therapist did suggest over the phone that it may be a good idea to have her go to one.

When I was 12 I was filling out a poorly fitting 34DD so I know the pain here. (I was remeasured as a 28G at 13 and finished out as a 28H at age 16, so I've definitely done my fair share of big bra shopping!) Victoria's Secret is about the worst thing you can do to a girl with large breasts and a small frame- they have an atrociously small size selection, can't measure worth a crap, and are only interested in selling you what they have in stock- when I went in there at the age of 16, they tried to put me in a 36C- my ribs measure 26, and my bust 34! The band hung from my frame and the cups might as well have been nipple covers but the girl insisted it was a perfect fit and that I buy several in that size! Make sure that when she's wearing the bra the band is very snug and lays straight across her back on the loosest hook so that it provides the support she needs and gives it room to stretch over time. I danced for 15 years so I know how important support is with larger breasts and vigorous activity. stop, take a deep breath. Now assert yourself as a parent and say no. Put her in a chair in the the corner. Tell her she is to sit there for 15 minutes (or your chosen time) until she calms down. If she gets up, put her back and start the time over again. Then put on music and ignore her. If you give in now you are showing her that she is in control and you are setting yourself up for failure. She is 5, you are the mother and she is the child, show her the proper roles of that relationship.
