To the best of my knowledge they are all the same thing. They are all a person who gains magical power through the use of occult practices. However, I guess since you put battle mage the only difference is that the person devotes its magic to fighting others.

Compare/ Contrast Theme of Harry Potter to Wizard of OZ?
A big part of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is also about friendship. Harry is trying to figure out who are his true friends and who are those who seem to like him because of his fame. He becomes Ron's friend as soon as they meet, but Hermione was another matter. They didn't encourage her friendship until after the Halloween celebration evening. He also doesn't like Malfoy almost from the beginning. The theme in Harry Potter is about finding a place where he belongs. For most of his life, he lived with a family that didn't love him and abused him. He finally gets his wish of finding a family that accepted him on his 11th birthday. Hogwarts becomes the place he calls home and his friends from Hogwarts become his family. The major difference between HPSS and Wizard of Oz is that in HP the main character goes away to a new world and finds it better than the one he left. Even with all the dangers that face him in this new world, he prefers to stay there. He has finally found the place where he belongs, he has come home. In Wizard of Oz Dorothy leaves her home to enter a new world with all the good things a child could want - plus a wicked witch - but she misses her home. Being in this world serves to remind her that her true friends and family are those she has left behind. And she will do anything to return home. I hope this helps.
