Can Anyone Tell Me About The Course M.tech Research In Mechanical Engineering At Nit Surathkal

What are the best M.Tech streams for mechanical engineers?

it should be decided according to your interestmachine deign :if you are good in strength of material, theory of machines, vibration, design of machine elements,…… you can take this course. normally this will be the first preference by most of the students. normally it is difficult to get this course in good iits, nits. among nits ,warangal, rourkela, calicut , durgapur, kurukshetra, raipur etc provide this course.compared to thermal this is new course’design engineering’ is also a similar course, nits like surathkal, jaipur, patna etc provide this course2. thermal engineeringif you are interested thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, refrigeration, air conditioning, ic engines, power plant engineering, turbomachinery… etc,, . you can opt this subject.most of the iits, and nits provide this course. if you are aiming further competitive exam preparations this course will slighty help your preparation.3. manufacturing engineeringif you are interested in manufacturing process, machining, robotics, unconventional manufacturing process, metal cutting… etc you can opt this course . most of the iits and nits provide this course.production engineering, computer integrated manufacturing(in nit warangal), additive manufacturing…etc are the courses of similar streamTHE ABOVE MENTIONED ARE THE MAJOR CORE MTECH COURSES4. computer aided design and manufacturingthis integration of manufacturing engg and machine design with computerisation nit surat and nit nagpur provide this course.5. industrial engineeringif you like industrial management, operational research, project management, supply chain management…etc. the you can opt this course6. material scienceif you like metallurgy, material science ..etc you can opt this coursethere some other courses like8. fluid mechanics(iiest shibpur)7. energy management (in nit calicut) ( little bit similar to thermal, )8. nano technology (in nit calicut)9 .ocean engineering and naval architecture(iit madras and iit kharagpur)

Thinking about going for M.tech in Marine structures at NIT surathkal. Is it a good idea?

It all depends on your area of interest. It's more of design of offshore structures and hydraulic structures. Placements are less You may find numerous job opportunities abroad but few in India. In case you want to go for PhD, you can even do PhD in Structural Engg after mtech in offshore structures. When it comes to the department, Marine Structures come under the applied mechanics department which is quite strict when compared to civil department.

Which will be better for a research career, an M.Tech in nanotechnology from NIT Surathkal or an M.Tech in material science from NIT Trichy? I am more interested in nanotechnology as a subject, but NIT Trichy’s ranking is better.

I studied at NIT Trichy way back in 2008. After that quiet a few things have changed at NIT Trichy.M.Tech in materials science is NIT Trichy is offered by Metallurgical and Materials Engineering department. Back in 2008, the quality of the stuff being taught was not great. The topics were not advanced. Most of the stuff that was taught in M.Tech materials science was almost similar to the stuff taught for B.Tech students. But the only reason why NITT gets good ranking is the placement. I can say that for B.Tech courses. Back then, I had also interacted with some M.Tech students of Materials Science and I remember some of them telling me that most companies which are looking for students from M.Tech often prefer M.Techs from the Mechanical department. There were also a few people who had done their B.Tech in the mechanical department and were doing M.Tech in material science. They regretted their decision a lot. They felt that had they done their M.Techs from any other NITs, but from a mechanical department, their opportunities would have been way better. I don’t if scenario is the same now or it has changed. In the same note, I think Nanotechnology is offered by the mechanical department of NIT Suratkal. So this might be a better option in terms job opportunities. Mechanical department would probably expose you to some computational courses and it would be useful to get introduced to some software. You might also have more industry relevant courses. If I was in your situation I would prefer the Nanotechnology at NIT suratkal because a) I am interested in that b) its in the mechanical department and probably has more practical courses.

Is it worth to do M.Tech from NIT surathkal?

It depends. If you are really interested in research areas or you want to study further. Doing Mtech from NITK is totally worth it because NITK is well established college. It is really good academic wise as well as infrastructure wise. Plus this is the only one college in India which has its own beach can you believe it.If you want placements after your Mtech then this place is best because here you'll get enough opportunities to get placed in one of the best companies. So it's your decision whether you want to do it from here or somewhere else.

Is it good to take ISM Dhanbad, M.Tech (mechanical) if I am getting in NIT Surathkal M.Tech (mechanical)? Which is better in terms of placements? Does ISM Dhanbad have the placements for M.Tech (mechanical)?

You should of course go with ISM Dhanbad - I'd say no point asking this question. The following are only some reasons:Students/ Culture: This is very comparable to IITs. After all, B.Tech students are from JEE and this is the least you can expect. You will find intelligent students with good grasp on basics all over. Technical hobbies and clubs are very common. Having known some students from NITs(not from Surathkal ofcourse), ISM is far better in this.Faculty: Again, faculty are around the same as the ones you find in IIT Kharagpur. Every faculty has a PhD and are good in what they are teaching. Ofcourse, research wise, I am not happy with ISM but I am quite sure that NIT Surathkal won't be any better.Reputation: Where ever you go(in India), you are always compared with IITs - never with NITs. I am talking about both industries and academic institutions. Conversion to IIT: If you are lucky, you might pass out with a degree from IIT as conversion of ISM to IIT is in process.Funds to the Institute: Again, ISM comes into the list of "Institutes of National Importance" just like IITs and IISc and hence gets more funds when compared to NITs.ISM Dhanbad campus is quite good and the city is very safe(We used to road around in city late nights like 2 am). If you thinking that Dhanbad is some isolated place in India, you should understand that it is coal capital of India and has many PSUs all over. Placements: Although this is something that you specifically asked for, I have not answered this because I have no idea about M.Tech placements. As such for B.Tech the placements are quite good. When I was doing B.Tech, almost the entire B.Tech batch had core offers with salaries ranging from 4 to 20 LPA. At that time there was no big M.Tech program in Mechanical Engineering. Now they are expanding and they have good number of M.Tech students as well. Generally in such scenario, they will encourage all the companies coming for B.Tech placements to recruit M.Tech students as well. But I am not sure how it has been going. You can contact the placement cell for information on this.

Is M.Tech life in NIT Surathkal good?

Yes. It is totally awesome. All the faculties are experienced and they make you learn the subject in intricate details. The lab facilities are also too good. We can learn a lot from them. Apart from that, many seminars, workshops and conferences are organized and we can get a lot of information from them. Coming to the entertainment part, there are so many cultural and technical events like Incident, Engineer, Cresendo, etc. All these events are organized very neatly and we have the same rights as B Tech students to participate in these events unlike some colleges where B tech students are preferred over M tech. There is a beach and we can enjoy the campus as much as we can. Swimming pool, recreation centers, food courts, etc are there for the relaxation part. The stipend for GATE scholars has been raised from 8000 to 12400 INR. In addition to that, we get a lot of opportunities for doing projects both inside the campus and outside campus. Many companies are willing to accept NITK students for the one year project. In conclusion, the overall experience in NITK is great!! So, if you get an opportunity to do M tech in NITK do not miss it.

What are you doing after an M.Tech from NIT?

Scope could be depende on your schedule and goals and branch too which you may join. There are few scope which I m describing as belowSOFTWARE SECTOR : There are lots of companies visiting nits for software recruitment obviously pg students from cs and it will have better opportunity at such place plus some companies will allow students from other branches to participate if they match necessary requirements.BANKING: Banking companies visits nits to recruit their analyst officers. For which basic knowledge of c, c++ is required and your aptitude must be sound. Depends on their recruitment they may allow pg students to apply.CORE COMPANIES: Core companies for respective others branches may come to recruit junior Engineer but those students need to keep their eyes open for any upcoming opportunities to catch any offcampus recruitment. Maintain good relations with your faculties they may help to find you a job if you don't have one based on their contacts.PHD: If any student want to pursue pHd they must obtain their guides recommendation to do PhD in either iits or some foreign reputed university.TEACHING: Teaching institute also visits nits for recruitment . Here you can apply and after your selection you may pursue your PhD as a sponsor candidate.OTHERS: Some students may prepare for some state PSUs exam while they are at nits because here they may have necessary materials in library plus time to prepare or they can use this platform to research properly and start their businessSO IN THE END FOR DIFFERENT STUDENTS AND THEIR DIFFERENT CONDITIONS OPPORTUNITY ARE AVAILABLE IN NITS OFCOURSE IITS ARE WAY BETTER THEN NITS TO PROVIDE BETTER FUTURE BUT ALWAY IT'S YOU WHO CARVED YOUR PATH.
