Can British People Work As Police Officers In The Us

Do police officers feel superior than other people ?

They certainly act it.

Why do people become police officers?

Well kid, First I'd recommend you stay in school; your grammar and spelling are atrocious. That being said, there are a variety of reasons people become police officers. Family pride, service to the community, ego but most take the job because of a consistent pay check and decent benefits.

It wasn't always like that. For many years, police officers were very underpaid. And today, depending on your locale, some still are underpaid.

I don't know why your opinions of the police are so negative. Do you get in trouble often? If not, I'd be hard pressed to believe you have formulated your opinion based on anything other than personal experience.

Today's police officers are better trained, better educated and better paid that those of our past. I can't complain. I make 100K and my schedule is hardly tough to take. I work Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 3:00pm. Not bad for a cuff n gun toting monkey huh?

How do British police officers manage to stop knife-wielding suspects safely when they don't carry firearms? A knife-wielding suspect is likely to be shot by North American police.

This is some recent footage of police disarming somebody armed with a knife. Notice it only took some pepper spray to reveal the assailant was probably not as confident as he first looked.I think the question reveals a fundamental difference in the role of the police force in the UK compared to the US. Because public gun ownership is tightly controlled in the UK, the police can do their job by consent because their relative power of force is quite small. And as this video shows, in the vast majority of cases using a gun to subdue somebody with a knife would be disproportionate force. However, in the US the public are essentially given no choice. The police are seen as within their remit to adopt maximum force at all times if they see fit. I would say that’s a socially corrosive situation myself. I am very glad I live in the UK where violent crime is an order of magnitude lower by comparison.United Kingdom vs United States: Crime Facts and StatsUPDATE: Some further analysis of the video shows the officer with the camera is working with their colleague with the pepper spray so that the assailant’s attention is focussed on the male officer. This allows the female officer to apply a second shot of spray from closer in which then allows them to subdue him. I would also point out that skilled use of the extended baton to the assailant’s wrist will have reliably disarmed the assailant in the event the spray didn’t work, but at the risk of injuring him. At all times the police will try to use minimal force in these situations.

I'm English, Can I Become A Police Officer in the US?

If you want to be a Police Officer just because you can carry a firearm, you may be better off staying in the UK. If you're past the "obsession" with firearms and have an honest desire to become a Police Officer for other reasons it can be done.

I know two former UK citizens that emigrated when the were young and became naturalized US citizens and became Police Officers in my area.

Part of it is where you choose to study. To become a Police Officer in the US, you'd have a better chance completing your University level education in the US rather than in the UK.

Working for any Security company isn't the best option for becoming a Police Officer. There are a lot of crap companies that can put you in dangerous situations with little or no training on how to deal with them. This opens you up to liabilities that could ruin your chances to become a Police Officer. But working for a reputable Security organization is an excellent way to develop necessary skills in dealing with people professionally in stressful situations and service situations.

If you attend University in the US there will be many resources available to you to line up suitable employment geared towards Law Enforcement until you are granted US citizenship. After that, it's simply a matter of applying and successfully completing the hiring process.

Good Luck!

Why don't British police carry guns, but American police officers do carry guns?

Britain is so “not-a-gun-culture” that even criminals there don’t have guns. And there are special armed officers for dealing with the very few who do. This, however, does not mean British cops tap you on the shoulder and say, “Please, sir, may I arrest you?” In London, the police are very quick to respond, and usually very effective. Situations that are long, drawn-out affairs in the U.S., because the police here are worried about guns suddenly becoming a factor, are handled in the U.K. in just seconds. I remember a young woman exiting a Sainsbury’s in front of me, in London, who had been identified as a shoplifter. Instantly, a police van screeched to a halt, in the street, and three officers jumped out. A policewoman sprinted past me, and a friend, recognizing her, said, “Hey, Ginny!” The policewoman shouted, “Can’t talk - busy!” and then tackled the shoplifter on the footpath, cuffed her, and a few seconds later threw her in the back of the van. And off they went. The whole thing took about 30–40 seconds. In the U.S., the same thing would have taken half an hour, and required half a dozen back-up cars, and all sorts of standing around and cryptic muttering over radios while everyone pulled up their holsters, probably giving the suspect (or bystanders) time to get angry and start a verbal argument, causing even more trouble.

In general, what do British police officers think of the American approach to policing?

Basically we are all brothers and sisters in the blue. We feel it when one of our own gets injured or killed in the line of duty just like we would a UK officer. The basics of policing are the same the whole world over it’s methods that differ. We don’t have the same number of firearms as America so we don’t need to carry as frequently as our US brothers and sisters. The best weapon for any police officer is common sense and an ability to talk to people. Whether it’s little Minnie down the road whose had her welfare stolen or a drunk on a Saturday night it’s these that will determine if the matter gets resolved

Do British or American police officers know any Martial Arts?

Do British or even American police officers train in any form of martial arts whilst at police academy?

So if an average bobby was on his beat and found him self alone with no truncheon or back up and came face to face with a skilled martial artist would he know what to do?

( im just asking this for personal curiosity, relax im not planning on doing anything like this)

Can british people join the LAPD?

Although many smaller cities and states now allow legal residents to apply for positions of a police officer, Los Angeles is not one of them. But they do allow permanent residents who have applied for citizenship to apply for a police officer trainee position.

Here is their minimum requirements according to their official website:

" Requirements

1 Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application for membership
2 Must be in good physical and mental health with no disabling physical condition
3 Must possess a valid California Class C driver's license
4 Must not have a history of criminal or improper personal conduct that may affect suitability for police work
5 Must possess a United States high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
6 United States citizenship required or have applied for citizenship"

The last is a concession to those persons who have otherwise qualified for citizenship, but are waiting for processing of their applications (usually requires 5 years of residency; but some provisions of law can allow applications earlier):

"Some departments, such as the Los Angeles Police Department, require applicants who are legal permanent residents to apply for U.S. citizenship by the time they take the department's written entrance exam and to become citizens by their third year on the force."
