How can I become an elementary school teacher?

Dear Emma,

I am a retired elementary principal from Wisconsin, who was also an elementary teacher long ago. First, given the fact that you already have taken a multitude, and a wide array of classes, you most likely could start as a junior at the baccalaureate level. This would mean approximately two more additional years of college, which would include your student teaching experience of one semester's length. (Note: opting for an internship would span an entire school year.) Keep in mind baccalaureate credits are considerably less expensive than master degree credits. Secondly, if you still insisted on getting a teaching degree at the masters' level, understand this may make it more difficult to acquire a job teaching in elementary school because prospective employers would have to start you out at a higher wage level, according to their collective bargain agreement with the teacher's union, than that of someone with just a B.S./B.A. degree in elementary education. We currently are going through an era in which budgets of school districts are being tightened. If you still really want the master's degree, then get it in an area, found within elementary schools wherein it would either be seen as a necessity or as a plus. For example, most any special ed. field, counseling, school psychologist, administrator etc.

However, if you are strictly considering becoming a regular elementary classroom teacher, which to me your above statement generally makes me think that, then I would recommend getting the Elem. Ed. B.S. or B.A. degree. Don't worry about the 2 extra years, if elementary teaching is really what you would love to do, I say... GO FOR IT! The time in college will fly by because you will working on something you truly love to do! Plus, whether you believe this or not, you are still very young even at 27, or at 29, or at 30...etc. The college years are among the best times of person's life! Cherish them!
You will make new friends, have new experiences, and when you leave college and enter the profession of teaching you will be given the greatest gift of all, that being, the opportunity to make a positive difference in the life of children. This in-turn will provide your life with an insight and a meaning that no price tag or high salary position could ever speak to. Good luck, Emma, no matter what you choose to do. If you choose to be an elementary teacher, I know you will be a great one!

What is required to become a history teacher?

You probably didn't expect such a load of lousy answers, did you?

You will need to either major in history and supplement that with teaching methods courses or find a university program in education that combines content courses (in your case, history courses) and methods courses in a secondary/middle school education major. Then you would need to get teaching certification in the specific state in which you will teach. In most states, you would need to earn a master's degree within the first few years of teaching to be recertified.

There are far too many good education programs in the country to list them all here. College rankings are not a perfect measure of academic quality - far from perfect, in fact - but one way to judge education programs is to look at rankings of graduate programs from a source like US News, since the same faculty teach graduate AND undergraduate students and because rankings of specific undergraduate programs are very hard to find. That list for secondary education right now looks like this:

Best Education Schools Specialty Rankings: Secondary teacher education
Ranked in 2009
1....Michigan State University East Lansing, MI
2....University of Wisconsin--Madison Madison, WI
3....Stanford University Stanford, CA
4....University of Georgia Athens, GA
5....Ohio State University Columbus, OH
6....University of Virginia (Curry) Charlottesville, VA
7....University of Michigan--Ann Arbor Ann Arbor, MI
8....Indiana University--Bloomington Bloomington, IN
......Pennsylvania State University--University Park University Park, PA
......University of Illinois--Urbana-Champaign Champaign, IL

Parents, when you were in kindergarten, was your teacher allowed to give spankings to the students?

I am 34 and remember my kindergarten teacher giving a fellow classmate of mine a spanking. It made such an impression on me that I still remember the girl's name even though we were never in another class together again. This was public school in VA, and the following year, my teacher was made assistant principal.

If a teacher doesn't show up in the first 15 minutes of class, am I free to leave?

I have actually experienced this in high school, and I am telling you NOT to leave. In fact, you should report this to someone. We had an 8th period honors lit class and it was the 3rd week of school last fall. We knew ahead of time that we were going to have a sub that day. When the bell rang, nobody was there. Of course the very same rumor (the 15 minute rule) started being mentioned, but it was shut down by a few people who said that is nonsense. So, our class adjusted from the plan to leave after 15 minutes to just never calling for a teacher to come. So, for 30 minutes we socialize, while getting cover from a couple of girls (who decided to turn off the lights to make it look like we are watching a movie or something as well as make everyone shut up when someone opened the door to go to the bathroom). Of course, about 35 minutes into the 50 minute class, we got exposed when one of the students decided to email the principal that she was being trapped and pressured to be quiet and not notify anyone. The lit department supervisor came in and obliterated our class verbally, which is completely fair. Our normal teacher plus the supervisor then scolded us for another 20 minutes the following week. Luckily, in about a month, I think the incident became the past and was not really important in terms of class dynamic.Overall, I can’t tell you for college but in highschool you better not damn leave your class.

Is sign language considered to be a second language?

Yes, American Sign Language is officially recognized as a foreign language. It has different structure, idioms and a separate community that utilizes the language. Weather or not your colleges recognize that, is a completely different story, you do however have grounds on which to fight it if you wish to use it as a second language instead of an elective since the USA has deemed it a second language.
