In canada, is it legal to carry a knife in your car?

Knives are perfectly legal in Canada -- provided they do not have a spring or gravity assisted blade and aren't a sword.

It is perfectly legal to carry a knife in your vehicle. You can visit a Canadian Tire and buy 20 boxes of steak knives, pocket knifes, camping knives, etc. if you wish.

It is illegal to carry a concealed weapon (of any type) on your person. It is perfectly legal to carry a knife in a sheath, you just can't conceal it in a pocket or belt. It is illegal to take any weapon to a 'public gathering'. This is generally means any public building such as a school, city hall, arena, etc.

If is generally stupid to carry a knife in the glove box. If you are pulled over by the police... they can think you were reaching for it rather than the insurance papers. If it generally stupid to rely on any weapon in a vehicle. If you have enough time to reach in a glove box or under the seat, take out a knife, open the blade, and use it... you could have hit the horn, locked the door, or just driven away. If he has the ability to smash in a window... a knife isn't going to help you. You are also at a huge disadvantage trying to fight while seated and taking out any weapon is far more likely to cause your attacker to draw their own weapon or otherwise escalate to lethal force.

If you take out a weapon prior to someone breaking into your vehicle, in most cases that is considered premeditation to commit assault/murder. In Canada, self defense cases can only be made if you *had* to use such force. If you had time to take out a weapon and you didn't call the police, drive away, etc. you can't claim self defense.

Carrying a knife in canada.?

Carrying a utility knife is perfectly legal in Canada.

Carrying a knife for self-defence is totally illegal in Canada.

That's the law. The problem is, when is a particular knife a utility knife, and when is it a weapon? Sometimes, the knife itself is the clue - a pocket jackknife is clearly not a weapon. A 10' sheath knife is super useful in the bush, but, could be seen as a weapon if worn in a city. So, it can be a judgment call on the part of the police, and ultimately the courts.

It sounds like you have the right idea - using a knife as a tool. I know from being in the military, and now as a Canadian Ranger, only an idiot would go out into the bush without a good knife. But, if I saw someone in a city wandering around with a knife, I might be more concerned.

So, the key idea: tool, or weapon? Tool - good; weapon - bad. You may want to be very careful just which knife you carry as a tool - you want no-one in authority to accuse you of carrying a weapon! And, spring assisted knives are illegal in Canada - even if it did pass the border. So, you would have a LOT of problems being caught with one. Carrying something like a Leatherman would be fine.

Can a 15 year old legally carry a knife in Canada?

To the best of my knowledge there is no minimum legal age requirement to carry the age is determined by your legal guardian as they are responsible for your actions as a minor any rights you are granted come from them. That being said I can't think of a less reliable way to find out local laws then asking a total stranger on the internet. Your BEST course of action in to call the non-emergency police number in the jurisdiction you intent to carry and ask. Don't be surprised if they ask you what you intend to carry it for because most people are dumb enough to say "for self defense" which is a big fat NO. I would make sure they knew I was carrying it as a tool "can I carry it to go fishing or can I carry it over to a friend's house to show it off"? Make sure your parents are cool with it and make sure the cop you ask knows your parents are willing to give you permission.

One other thing, IMO carrying around a knife without a real need can be asking for trouble all it takes is pissing off the wrong group of people and the next thing you know one of them is claiming you pulled your knife on them and their friend's back the story. Something like that usually ends in arrest and expensive bail and a lawyer, even if you don't get in trouble it will still be a major hassle so be mindful of where you carry.

In Canada is it legal to carry a pocket knife in public?

Yes. Perfectly legal.

Knives are legal in Canada provided that they do not open automatically using a spring, gravity, centrifugal force, or other automatic means (i.e. switch blades, butterfly knives, 'flick' knives, etc.) or other inherently concealed (i.e. belt knives, sword canes, etc.). Such knives are prohibited weapons and carry serious criminal penalties in Canada. There are hundreds of millions of knives in Canada -- kitchen knives, hunting knives, pocket knifes, utility knives, work knives, etc. You can buy them virtually anywhere... Walmart, Canadian Tire, Home Depot, etc. There are no legal age restrictions on minors purchasing knives -- although some sorts will implement their own policies. Virtually every boy scout in Canada has a knife as do many (if not most) young boys... especially in any rural area.

Carrying a concealed weapon is illegal. This means any knife must be worn openly (such as a belt sheath) or stored (in a backpack, bag, vehicle, etc.) where it is not within reach.

Carrying any weapon on private property is illegal without the permission of the owner. This means you can't have one in a store, mall, sporting event, etc. It is also illegal to bring a weapon to a public gathering -- which includes schools, government officers, police stations, protests, council meetings, libraries, etc.

Even these have some common-sense enforcement from the police. If you are backpacking through a public park... the police aren't likely to care if you have a pocket knife in your pocket vs. visible or in your backpack -- if they notice, you'll likely get a warning, if that. Obviously, if you are hanging around near a school and have one in your pocket... they are more likely to file charges.

What is the law in Canada for carrying a knife while hiking? I want one on my belt, as there are bears and coyotes on my 40 km trek in the woods. I’m, also, a female travelling solo.

Do you really believe that a knife will save you in fight with either animal? As for self defense, Canada has strict laws about using a weapon for the intent to cause harm to another person. Here is a link to answer your question.https://www.canucksurvival.com/c...

Can I carry and use an 11-inch fixed knife for self defense in Canada (of course, I wouldn't say I was carrying the knife for self defense)?

You can carry, but be prepared to be arrested if you try to use it. There are many stories of people being arrested in Canada for defending their home, so outside your home may be even worse. How are you going to carry this 11″ blade anyway? Together with the handle, that would be around 16″ long and very hard to conceal. Even a knapsack will give you various problems to carry safely, and unless you are taking cooking classes will still give you problem if earched. If you want to carry around something for defense , carry a solid aluminum or titanium hooked walking stick. Take some lessons to use it, or at the very least, watch some online video and practice from there.Canada is quite safe in general, so I have to assume that you have a specific threat in mind.

Is there a maximum knife length I can carry in Canada (or Alberta)?

As far as I’m aware, the only knives that are prohibited or restricted are switch blades and their ilk.You can carry other knives whenever/however you want. However, you have no right to do so. If the police ever feel that you are carrying a weapon dangerous to the public - whatever that weapon is - they can seize it, and possibly arrest you depending on the circumstances. It’s not unheard of for police to be willing to take any weapon you’re carrying that you can’t justify as not being for aggressive use - IE: you can carry a swiss army knife no problem, or a slightly larger one, in almost any circumstance. If, however, you carry a big ol’ combat knife, you’d better have a good story to tell the cops if you don’t want them to take it from you. (Usually, that story would involve going out into the backwoods. Canadians respect the dangers of the boonies).
