What is meant by hallelujah?

In modern English, "Hallelujah" is frequently spoken to express happiness that a thing hoped or waited for has happened. An example is its use in the song "Get Happy”History of word:The word hallelujah in Revelation 19 is used in heaven, where a great multitude has gathered before the throne in the immediate presence of God Himself. It is the wedding supper of the Lamb. The enemies of God have been overthrown, and the gospel has triumphed. In a victory celebration, all heaven renders praise, a song of thanksgiving uttered by all holy beings united. Reasons for this glorious outpouring of praise are God’s righteous victory over His enemies (Revelation 19:1–3), His sovereignty (verses 4–6), and His eternal communion with His people (verse 7). The sound of the outpouring of praise and worship is so overwhelming that the apostle John can only describe it as “like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder” (verse 6).So great is the rejoicing by God’s people at the wedding feast of the Bridegroom (Christ) and the bride (the church) that hallelujah is the only word grand enough to express it. Handel’s version of the great chorus in heaven, as glorious as that music is, is only a feeble foreshadowing of the magnificence that will be expressed by the heavenly chorus as we sing, “Hallelujah, for the Lord God omnipotent reigns!”Thanks!Mayank

What song does "can I get an amen or a hallelujah!" come from?

Can I get an amen or a hallelujah? comes from Southern Gospel preachers who used the line to engage their congregations and underscore key points of their sermons. When asked, the parishioners would, not surprisingly, respond with an Amen! or a Hallelujah! As such, many gospel pieces include that line, along with James Brown, The Blues Brothers and a host of other musicians. Do you like the song Hallelujah?

I absolutely love the song. The lyrics are powerful, poignant, and moving.I adore Cohen’s rhymes for hallelujah:“But you don't really care for music, do ya?I love how the lyrics describe what the melody is doing:“It goes like this, a fourth, a fifth, a minor fall, a major lift”I love how the lyrics describe the songwriter meeting the girl, and his joy and utter surrender to her:“She tied you to a kitchen chair, she broke your throne, and she cut your hair, and from your lips she drew that Hallelujah.”I feel the pain when the love ebbs and he recalls how it was when they made love:“Remember when I moved in you, the holy dove was moving too, and every breath we drew was Hallelujah.”But now the love is gone and although only memories remain, he still is grateful for the experience:“And even though it all went wrong, I’ll stand before the Lord of Song with nothing on my lips but Hallelujah.”Truly a masterpiece, and a fitting memorial for an incredible musical talent. Thank you, Mr. Cohen.

What is the meaning of the word "broken" as in 'broken hallelujah' in the song Hallelujah?

What is the meaning of the word "broken" as in 'broken hallelujah' in the song Hallelujah?I have no problem with religious music (some say gospel music) as I cut my teeth on it, have sang it all my life and still enjoy it in my golden years. However, the song Hallelujah, written by Leonard Cohen, was never written to be a religious song (not even close), even though some people think it is, and often rewrite it to be a Christian hymn when it dawns on them that it is not one.Interestingly, before Leonard Cohen passed over, he asked people to quit rewriting his stuff. But I must confess that I recorded this song years back and I rewrote the lyrics just a tad for even more dramatic effect toward the meaning that the composer initially intended.Hallelujah means to praise or rejoice…..it is a happy word, but the right woman can steal or break a man’s hallelujah—This is what Cohen was writing about. This song is written about people who are losing their Hallelujah, not people who are rejoicing via the term.In the first verse, he writes about King David watching a cute girl bathe in the moonlight but it ended up that she stole his hallelujah.Your faith was strong but you needed proofYou saw her bathing on the roofHer beauty in the moonlight overthrew youShe tied you to her kitchen chairShe broke your throne and she cut your hairAnd from your lips she drew your HallelujahThen he writes about his own girl doing the same thing to him:There was a time when you let me knowWhat's really going on belowBut now you never show that to me, do you?But remember when I moved in youAnd the holy dove was moving tooAnd every breath we drew was HallelujahHallelujah [x4]Maybe there's a God abovebut all I've ever learned from loveWas how to shoot somebody who outdrew youAnd it's not a cry that you hear at nightIt's not some pilgrim who's seen the lightIt's a cold and a very broken HallelujahThis poor guy in the song may even be losing his faith. But what a creative piece from a Jewish guy who, although he thinks he could maybe be a better Jew, never lost his connection to Israel and the Jewish people.Leonard Cohen: Always a Jew at HeartThis may be Cohen’s best work ever, IMHO……Here is my version—make it or break it……Hallelujah.mp3
