Can I Still Play The Piano With A Messed Up Wrist

Can I still play the piano with a messed up wrist?

It has always been my dream to be able to play the piano. However, when I turned 10 I had to get surgery on my wrist because I had a deformity called madelung which makes my wrist bone grow longer than the second one. I got an inch taken off the bone that was growing longer than the other one. A few years later I got another surgery to add metal plates to help support my arm, then last year I got one to remove my plates and my bone is now growing back. My range of motion is not very good when it comes to my right wrist (im left handed.) I was told that playing piano was all in the wrists, my other wrist moves just fine, just the one that is messed up is a little stiffer. So...back to my question. Could I still learn to play the piano?

Can you play soccer with a broken wrist?

When I played football(soccer) league the captain broke her wrist. She was right wing midfield, so basically did all the running and passing. But it kind of depends on the ref. She was allowed to play in a few friendlies- the ref allowed her. On the other hand she wasn't allowed to play in big matches.
I don't think there is a specific rule, As long as the hand and wrist are properly strapped up.
Micheal Essien played for Chelsea and i think ghana? with a broken wrist pretty fine.
Frank Lampard was not allowed to play whilst he had a broken wrist, so it is up to three people. The ref, the coach and the player.

A short cast should be fine :)

That makes us both goalkeepers then, worst thing i ever did was run into the goal post backwards. Cringe *blush*

My veins hurt while playing piano?

Most likely you're raising your arms too high and letting your arms hang. Drop your hands further so that your wrist remains relatively flat. It's more noticeable if you play and have a mirror showing your hands. This is probably what is cutting off circulation and creating the pain you feel on your left hand.

If you cut (your wrists),can it mess up the nerves in your hands?

I've been having troubles with my wrist and hand for a while; a few months after I started cutting deeper. I play piano by the way, so I thought that I got Carpal Tunnel, but I went to the doctor today and he said I cut so deep that I damaged one of my nerves; so yes, you can. I'm only 14, and it hurts; I don't want my hand amputated! Please stop cutting, hun. It's not worth it. I cut so deep I saw my veins each time; I haven't cut for a month so far- you can stop. :)

Does playing squash screw up playing Piano????

Playing squash and tennis will have little effect your piano playing until you get older . . . unless you get hurt. I would imagine there is a greater risk of injury when playing squash than when playing tennis. You have to determine the relative importance of each activity for you.

When I play trills on the piano, my fingers just don't move fast enough. What exercises can I do to fix this?

Vladimir, below, has given an astounding understanding of the physics of fast piano playing (trills are only a subset of fastness in general).I will add only that I find things work best when you concentrate on the goal of not just speed, but rhythm - absolute smoothness in how the notes come out. This involves LOTS of relaxation. Our instincts for speed involve revving up and tightening muscles, to move in a burst of power. This is exactly the opposite of what you need for a trill.I am in awe of drummers who can do rolls at super-high speed for a long time. My brother was in a band, and he bought a record of a guy (an LP, 30 minutes on each side) of doing nothing but starting rudimentary stick-patterns, starting very, very slow and very gradually gaining speed until it sounded impossible; and then he began to slow down to the original tempo, so gradually you could hardly notice it. Control over the speed, just listening for the up and down of the trill to come out smoothly and gracefully will make trills come out right.Relaxrelaxrelaxrelaxrelaxrelaxrealx. Relax. Let your back, with its big strong muscles, control your fingers. This is not some sort of swami-yoga mysticism, it’s just how your body works; everything is connected, and you get smoothness and endurance from the big muscles.I had a terrible time learning Widor’s organ toccata in C - nothing but 16ths from beginning to end for five solid minutes, big fat repeated chords. I began to think first about - “how does this make music? what is he trying to say? It’s not just noise and color, it’s musical thought.” That helped get my mind off the physical effort and on to the goal. Hurdlers don’t think of the hurdle; they think of clearing the hurdle. Think of the hurdle and you’ll join it in a mess of mud while the other runners zip on along. What is a trill? It’s a beautiful, gorgeous musical entity, a bird call, a wavering, a quiver. it’s not just a blob of notes that are way too fast. It’s grace - in fact, trills and ornaments are called “graces.” We handle Christmas-tree ornaments delicately. We do not hold them tensely in our hand, or we will crush them.Star a trill - not the one in the music, but just anywhere on the keyboard - slow, slow, slow, but perfectly even in timing, not by a metronome, but by your inner gut you’ll know when it’s perfect. Then pour just a few coals on the fire, gradually, ever so gradually, always keeping the rhythm smooth.

Can you teach yourself piano by just messing around?

If you have an ear for music, you most definately can! My suggestion though, is to get a beginner's piano book and teach yourself to read notes, learn about time signatures, types of notes, etc. If you already have some musical experience through voice or another instrument, it will make playing the piano much easier.

Just remember that, like anything, it takes a lot of practice to become competent.

Good luck!
