Other parts flowed easier.But then, in the spirit of total freedom, I wrote and recorded this piece below entirely on the fly, lifting the beat from Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” (a simple feat of drum machine programming), picking a length out of thin air, and then kind of improv-ing the bass, then rhythm guitars, then lead guitars over it. The whole song was written, recorded, mixed and uploaded to the intertubes in about 6 hours. I held myself to no more than 3 takes on anything. music ownership is more complicated than you might think. There are several parts to the ownership. First there is ownership of the composition. Which can be thought of as sheet music. There used to be an enormous music publishing industry based on selling sheet music to ordinary families, who would play them on their home pianos and parlor guitars. This still applies today in the realm of ringtones.The second part is ownership of the performance or arrangement. This can be thought of as owning the recording.Finally there are ‘mechanicals’ which are the individual units of the song that is sold to consumers. Either as a DC, record or MP3. In some cases different people own the mechanical publishing rights for different mediums, or regions.This means that your person could own the publishing rights of the music, and you could own the recording. He could sell the same music to someone else to record and that would mean nothing to you.Basically you should always have a contract going into any kind of production where the ownership of the publishing, performance and mechanicals is anything less than crystal clear.There is a company called NOLO press that publishes relatively affordable legal books. They usually have tear out contracts and forms in the back and explain everything about the topic of interest. I am pretty sure they have one for music publishing. Depending on the length, possibly up to 5 days, 10hrs a day. I have bashed out tracks in a matter of hours, yet some can take days.Acoustic Based: £250 per day. Includes recording instruments, vocals and whatever else needs to be tracked, as well as tea and coffee.This consists of: Score Writing, Recording, Arrangement, Technical Production, Mixing and Mastering.And that's in my pro home studio. Imagine what it could cost in a commercial studio.Also, you'd have to pay for sampling copyright. Not me, I've made this bootleg for your own, personal enjoyment, and the contract we signed, removes all of my responsibility.And then you could get clearance, make a cool million pound off it, and I'd be pissed.
