Can I completely remove all traces of pre-installed Windows 10 from a new machine and  install Windows 7 home or maybe Linux?

There is a Linux distribution called dban boot that and erase the disk, then install Windows/Linux.http://www.dban.org

Is it advisable to get a pre-installed DOS OS laptop and install Windows later?

Go for Win 10.Reasons:If you have used windows for most of the time, then believe me at certain point you will feel wish i had windows. If you are a .Net developer (sorry facing same issue)Best games (*pirated*) are available for windows only.Easier to get required software easily (*again pirated*) from others rather than downloading from Internet (since for Linux platform you need active internet connections for downloading tools which are not easily available)If you are thinking I can have pirated windows then: as per new implementation in Win 10 , you can only work for couple of hours and then it will restart by itself. Eventually it won’t boot at all :( . And after some days realizing your mistake you plan to purchase one it will cost you approx 10k INR.IF you think above points does not bother you then you can definitely go for DOS one.(I think laptop with DOS will cost you less as compared to laptop with Linux OS *strange but seen some products in such a way*).

Can I reinstall Windows 10 in a laptop that came pre installed with Windows 10 after formatting it?

I like Michael Kingsbury’s answer. The thing about Windows is, so long as the hardware doesn’t change (substantially), he’s right, you can reinstall Windows 10 as often as needed (in my opinion, that can be considered n - 1 times too many). You can do stuff like add more RAM, add hard drives, or install a separate video card without causing Windows to consider the hardware to have changed so much that the computer is considered to be a “new” or “different” machine. It’s sort of like the guy who says, “Yep, same old axe as I’ve always had. I’ve changed the handle three times and the axehead twice, but essentially, it’s the same axe I bought twenty years ago”. No, clearly it’s not.If you change the CPU (which usually means the motherboard as well), Windows considers it to be a “new” machine, If someone did a brain-transplant and put in a new brain into someone, would they be the same person? Of course not (philosophy geeks, don’t get too mad at me, please). When you change the CPU and motherboard, you are changing the “brain” of the computer, and so it’s technically a new machine.Otherwise, you’re good to go. Now, to be my (usual) mischievous self, I’d say this. If you are going to change the operating system on your laptop, don’t re-install Windows 10 (though it’s the best that Microsoft has produced, it’s still second-rate compared to Linux). Instead, install ZorinOS (Zorin OS: Your Computer. Better.), or Elementary OS (A fast and open replacement for Windows and macOS ⋅ elementary OS). I may be wrong, but I think both are, if I am not mistaken, “forks” of the famous (and most widely used Linux distro), Ubuntu. I think you’ll find these to be as easy to use as Windows, without all the stability or security hassles so common to Windows. If that scares you too badly, download and install Oracle VM VirtualBox or VMware Workstation Player (free), and install either of the two Linux distros I mentioned above as VMs (virtual machines), try them out, and if one or the other appeals to you, go ahead and (back up your system data and) install it.Thanks for the A2A.

How can I transfer Windows (genuine) on my new Laptop from its HDD to a new SSD without losing the license? (Solved)

Option 1 (Format, Install):Using the Media Creation Toolkit to make a DVD or USB you can use to install windows 10: Download Windows 10Note: Make sure you are using Microsoft Account and not only a Local Account, that way on the installation when it asks for a key you can skip it and later login with your account, that will re-activate windows automatically. On the new installation, after you activate Windows, you can create a Local Account if you choose to do so.Option 2 (Copy):There's a more practical way to do that without re-installing your whole system, it just takes a bit of your time but lowers the risk of you loosing anything and allows you to keep all your Windows settings:Using "EaseUS Partition Master" (Free)Open the software.Go to the menu Wizard and click "Migrate OS to SSD/HDD"Choose your SSD as the target (destination disk)Important: Clicking yes will allow the software to delete partitions on the destination diskYou may now resize the partitions on the destination diskImportant: Tick the little box on the left bottom corner that says "Optimize for SSD"As soon as you click "Next" the program will begin copying your diskIt's finished, done, that's it, remove your HDD (don't format it until you are sure the copy is working properly and Windows is correctly activated) and test your SSD!If your SSD has a smaller size than the HDD partition you are copying from you may want to move all the data that isn't critical for Windows into a second disk or another partition and then resize, you may also do that with the software.

Can I install Windows 8/7 in a laptop that comes with Windows 10 installed?

You can install a separate partition, if you have enough HDD space and yes, you need to install drivers separately, as Win 10 and Win 8 won’t be able to “get to know one another.” Before you proceed, MAKE A BACK-UP of all the data, to avoid losing photos, audios and other documents. To install Windows 8, do the following:Insert the Windows 8 Installation disk/USB drive;Restart the PC go to BIOS and set the DVD-ROM/USB drive as the first boot device;* In BIOS navigate to Boot Device Priority (or to First boot device on some BIOSes) and move the DVD - ROM/USB to the first place, using the arrow keys and Enter.Exit BIOS and press any key once asked;Follow the on-screen instructions and once you see the drives, delete one of the drives (not the drive Windows is installed in (usually, Drive 1, the smallest in GB size - not the system-reserved one);* MAKE SURE TO MAKE A BACK-UP of all the data, before you delete the drive.Make new drives (one at least 97.5 GB - write 100000 and the other, with what has remained of the drive you deleted).Install Windows 8 in the small drive (97.5 GB);You can also consider installing VMware, in Windows 10, and install Windows 8 as a virtual operating system.Sources: Don't know how to install an operating system (Windows)

Can my friend install Pirated Windows 7 in Dell Vostro 1500?

Hi Bibil,

Dell does not recommended installing a counterfeit copy of Windows 7 and neither it is legal. If you have purchased the system with OEM Windows 7 pre-installed, you may re-install Windows 7 using the OEM re-installation media by following the steps given in article http://dell.to/15U4ain. Once the OS is installed, you may install the drivers from http://dell.to/1enYz5L -> Enter the service tag of your system -> Select the operating system -> Download/install the drivers in correct order as given http://dell.to/1fTXzEl.

If the system was purchased with free DOS operating system and you wish to use Windows 7, I would suggest you to purchase a genuine licence of Windows 7 and install it using the product key.

Hope this helps.

Thanks & Regards,

How do I uninstall Windows 7, and restore a Dell Dimension E521 back to original factory settings?

Hi Quintin,

If you have partitioned / resized the hard drive of computer, you might not be able to access the Factory image partition. You might need to format the hard drive and re-install Operating System using (Windows OEM disc) in case there are any issues.

Before you proceed with operating system re-installation, I will advise you to take a complete backup of your data (pictures, music, applications, videos, documents) as this step leads to complete data loss. Remove all the external peripherals (like printers, scanners, any USB device except keyboard and mouse) connected to your computer.

For detailed steps, you may refer to link: http://dell.to/ZDfMyt

Select the operating system that you want to install on your computer.

Once the operating system is re-installed, you may download and install the drivers on your computer. You may download the drivers from the link: http://dell.to/10ksYYf

To know more about the installation of drivers in correct order, you may refer to link: http://dell.to/12oPjsc

Hope this helps.

Thanks and Regards,
