Can You Be A Surgical Technician With A Ged

Surgical Tech? Is it a good career?......?

I hope so!! I'm graduating next year! From what I understand, there are a lot of opportunities for surg techs with the opening of so many outpatient surgery centers and so on. The money is not bad, and it usually requires a training program, however, I am in an Associate degree program which is 2 years.

GED ques & surgical tech. ?

You can find programs online that will help you study for the GED. They usually charge. On the other hand, you can find free GED prep programs in your community. They are usually offered by community colleges, technical colleges, school districts, or community organizations.

You cannot take an actual GED test online. The online GEDs are not legitimate. The GED program is administered by each state, which sets up authorized testing centers around the state.

I can't imagine that there would be an accredited online surgical technologist program. I think it would be pretty scary to go into surgery somewhere where the surgical technician had only online training. I think that you should really investigate that program before sending them money.

Is it a good idea to become a part time surgical technician while in college or would the load be too much?

Humm…interesting question. In my opinion, it would work, as long as the clinic or hospital where you work had part-time or per diem hours that worked for you. Also, it would help immensely if you were allowed to be exempt from being on-call.On the other hand, if you are already an experience and / or certified surgical technician, and are experienced in eye surgery, you might want to look into working for your local eye or tissue bank on an on-call basis.I specialized in general surgery and eye surgery, but had to drop out of scrubbing cases when I began attending nursing school since it was too intensive. However, through a friend I learned of an opening for a part-time procurement technician and managed to get an on-call position with New England Eye Bank our of Boston. I’d done procurements before and not only had the stomach for it, but found the corneal removal and scleral procurements (whole eyeball) fasinating, so I managed to snag a job with the eye bank. The money and the hours were perfect while I was in college.I’ve been out-of-touch with surgical technology for quite a few years though, so I no longer have my finger on the pulse of that trade. But, like most technicians I know, you scrub into one of those interesting, marathon cases and before you know it you’re refusing to be scrubbed out and an hour turns into eight and ten hours. Interesting question though…good luck to you.

What does a surgical tech do?

Basic duties are:Collect all the needed supplies and instruments (including surgeon's preferences) for the case to be performed. Set up everything on sterile table(s) in most organized fashion to help surgery flow with minimal interruption. Assist the surgeon with draping and setting up sterile field around the surgical site. Assist the surgeon(s) with the case.  It can be as simple as just handing them instruments and equipment as needed or actually cutting suture, retracting, drilling, hammering with a mallet, etc (pretty much be their second pair of hands) if they don't have an assistant. Obviously more hands-on means that the surgeon has to trust you to delegate these more involved duties to you. After the surgery you help with cleaning up the room and preparing everything for the next surgery to follow.

Surgical Tech with tattoo

If you want to get a tattoo, get it in a place that won't show when wearing normal clothes. Any prejudice from a tattoo could be very subtle and hard to detect to say nothing of proving. In all honesty the person you're talking to may not even be aware s/he is being influences by a tattoo. It could indeed hurt your chances. Even the military these days are banning tattoos that show.

Can a certified surgical tech work as a vet tech?

It very much depends on the state you are in, the type of practice you are applying to and the hours you are looking for. In most states you must be credentialed as a veterinary technician to work as one, but you could still work as a veterinary assistant. In general practice, surgical assisting is a small portion of the overall job description of a veterinary technician or assistant so being a surgical assistant won't necessarily be a "point in your favor" but if you are applying to specialty surgical practices where surgery is all they do then it may be.
