I just finished writing the conclusion paragraph for my comparative essay (on family life in two books), and I wanted to know if it was well written. L'année dernière je suis allée à la fête d'anniversaire de mon amie. Vers midi je me suis habillée et j'étais prête à partir. Je suis allée à pied chez mon amie parce qu'elle habite près de chez moi. Nous sommes allés au parc et avons fait une bataille d'eau et nous avons aussi regardé un film d'horreur. Puis nous lui avons offert ses cadeaux et souhaité un joyeux anniversaire. Après ça nous avons tous dit au revoir et sommes rentrés chez nous.

We are analysing the language used on the reports of news, and the homework was chosing one headline from a group and writing a short article about it. I chose " Athlete fails drugs test and loses medal" and wrote: "The Olympic Anti-doping Committee stated this morning that the American swimmer Michael Phelps has failed a random drug test, but no word has yet been said on sustanste the athlete might have taken. In the light of the surprising news, Phelp's coach has said that his trainee has never cheated whatsoever, and that the London Olypics is not the exception. Then he went on to say that they will appeal the comittee statement. If the appeal does not succeed, then the six medals Phelps won past July and Agoust will be stripped."

Please critique. -- Taking a short cut does not always save time. For example, if one decides to take a short cut while driving in order to arrive faster, it may turn out that the 'short cut' has bad traffic and causes a delay greater than the time it would have taken to use the original route. Or in another setting, if while baking a cake, taking a 'short cut' by not following the recipe exactly to make the preparation go faster comes to mind, don't do it! The cake may turn out as a mess, requiring another cake to be made and over double the time to be used in making it. Trying to make things in life go faster by cutting corners may not always save you time in the end.

I shook my head violently to dislodge the vision, only succeeding in pulling a muscle in my neck. A sharp pain stabbed at me and I almost smiled. I welcomed the physical pain, embraced it with open, pleading arms. I needed to feel something besides this overwhelming, destructive anger. I was losing myself to it. Hating her so badly it hurt, loving her so much it felt as if she’d taken most of me with her, devastated at the evil thoughts that taunted me; smiling with malice when they became progressively more violent… My thoughts swam in my head, knotting and twisting until they became a low and inescapable hum. My hands took on a purplish hue in the cold and I was shaking uncontrollably. Yet I would not allow myself to cry, I couldn’t allow that. She may have the shattered shards of my heart in her uncaring hands, but she would never have my tears.
