Can You Get Old Files From Previous Windows Installation On Fresh Windows Install

Windows 10 installation help?

My laptop was in windows 7 which had viruses, I downloaded the windows 10 .iso installation file from Microsoft. I opened the iso file and run the setup.exe from the desktop then successfully installed windows 10 in my laptop with the option to not keep the old files.

My question is, are the viruses still in my computer? Even though I did not use a bootable flash drive/cd to install a new OS?

Already have Windows on a SSD. New computer came with it installed on a HDD. How to change?

I bought a new prebuilt computer today and salvaged my 2 SSD's from my old computer. The prebuilt came with Windows installed on its HDD. With my 2 SSD's in, I have 2 installations of windows but only one being recognized and booted from. How do I change it to where I can tell the computer "Don't boot the OS installed on the HDD, boot the OS that's installed on the SSD"? Please and thanks.

Do I have to uninstall Vista before installing Windows 7?

I want to install Windows 7 on my laptop that currently uses Vista, do I have to format my hard drive before installing Windows 7, or is there an option to basically upgrade while keeping all your applications currently installed, and if so, are there disadvantages to not formatting before installing the new OS?

Does Windows 10 delete your data when you install it?

If you boot from installation media like a USB stick or a DVD, then you can only do an install that wipes out your data. There is no option to keep it - with the caveat that you could choose to install on a separate partition and not actually wipe out your old files. Those files would still be present after the install but none of the programs would be installed. However it would be quite simple to go back and move all your pictures and other documents from the old to the new location, for example. If you boot from the existing operating system and perform an upgrade, then you are given the option of a fresh install which would wipe out your files, or an upgrade that maintains old applications and settings. If you choose this, you might get a message that some applications are not compatible. You should be aware that Windows will do the best job it can to perform the upgrade without affecting any applications, but some applications might not work exactly the same. There are literally millions of applications out there and the chances that nothing will go wrong when you replace the operating system are low. If you have issues with an app, it often helps to update it to the newest version, or reinstall the old version again. Sometimes you might just need to tweak some of the settings. If you perform an upgrade (keeping old files) then your old system files are moved to a “Windows.old” directory and replaced with newer ones. As long as you keep the Windows.old directory, you can revert back to the older operating system version later. If everything is fine, you can delete the Windows.old directory to free up disk space. To delete the Windows.old directory, you need to perform a disk cleanup, which is an option you get when you right-click the disk drive in file explorer and select properties. This is also where you would restore the old operating system. There are also other methods that can be used to upgrade the operating system, such as back up your data to a USB stick or other hard drive, then performing a clean install, then restoring your data from the backup location. Several third-party applications are sold that have this capability, and Microsoft provides tools like DISM that can do it for free.

Once I've installed Windows 10, if I have to factory reset my laptop, will it revert to Windows 8.1 or stay on Windows 10?

Depends on which method of factory reset you use.If you use the recovery media, it will install the version that came with the laptop and it will behave exactly the same as if you had just bought and unboxed it. In this case, Koundinya Upadhyayula's answer is right. If you use the built-in reset functionality (from the modern Settings app), you will get a clean install of Windows 10. Your laptop will behave as if you had just bought it, too, but this time, it came with Windows 10. In this case, Paul Olaru's answer is right.

I deleted my HD partition when I was installing Windows OS. How can I recover the deleted partition Windows 7?

When partitions are lost, the drive returns to its original unallocated raw state. When a hard drive or a partition becomes RAW, it means its filesystem cannot be recognized by the computer and therefore is unable to be mounted as a drive. Since the computer can’t see any filesystem, it prompts you to format it before you can use this drive.Partition lost is not as common as data loss. It could happen for various reasons: HDD failure, corrupted partition table and so on. Sometimes we know a partition is lost because we accidentally pressed the wrong key and deleted it.The easiest way to recover data from lost partitions would be using a professional data recovery tool. H Data Recovery Software features a module designed to tackle this problem. Follow the below steps to learn the easy way to recover your lost data.Step 1. Free download, install and launch H Data Recovery SoftwareStep 2. Choose “Hard Disk Partition Lost or Crash” from the main menuStep 3. Perform a full scan on the drive. Wait while the program is locating and rebuilding data.Step 4. When the scanning is complete, you can choose from the listed files and save them to your desired safe directory. It is highly recommended that the directory is located in another drive to avoid potential data overwriting.

Windows 7 Upgrade vs. Custom Install?

As far as I know, upgrade will save all of your files and settings from your previous windows installation in a folder called windows.old. However, I recently did a custom(clean) install on my laptop and I got a windows.old folder with all of my files... Was that supposed to happen? If it was, what's the difference between the two?

Will my computer's hard disk get erased if I install Windows 10?

It depends. There are two ways by which you can install windows 10. One is by downloading and installing winodws 10 using the “Get Windows 10” button which would be present in the system tray, in case you were using Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.Other method is by downloading the iso file for Windows 10 from some third party websites, and making a bootable USB drive or a disc, and installing it from there. No files will get affected if you are to install Windows 10 through the former method. Everything, including those softwares and applications you were using will remain intact. You will not have to install them all over again. But, if you choose to install Windows 10 using the latter method, The Local Disc partition in which you choose to install windows 10 will get formatted completely. Therefore, backup all your necessary files and folders before the installation. The last date to upgrade to windows 10 using the former method was 29th of July 2016. This makes you necessarily stick to the latter method of installation.Happy upgrading!

I already have Windows 10, can I delete Windows.old?

there is a small guide i have wrote on HACKORO how to delete windows.old folder in windows 10.Every time you upgrade your PC from an older version of Windows to Windows 10 without first formatting the hard drive, or when you install a new Windows Insider Preview test build, the install wizard will save a copy of the previous version inside of the "Windows.old" folder on your computer. This copy is a safeguard mechanism in case something goes wrong during the installation process. If something bad happens, the operating system can use the backup copy to roll back any change automatically. Or in the case of Windows 10, you also get the option to go back to your previous version of the operating system within the first month if you don't like it.If everything is working as expected after upgrading to Windows 10, you probably don't need these files, as they will just be wasting precious hard drive space. In this Windows 10 guide, we'll walk you through the steps to delete the Windows.old folder and other files that can be taking more than 15GB of storage space on your computer. This tips to delete windows.old folder in windows 10Search for and open the "Free up space." utility.Click Cleanup System Files.Check Previous Windows Installations.Step-by-Step Instructions with Screenshots How To Delete Windows.old Folder In Windows 10
