Can You Have A Bird In A Room That Was Smoked In

Smoking around birds?

I've been wanting to get a cockatiel for awhile now, one thing that concerns me is that I live with people who smoke. I don't smoke btw. I know smoking around birds is bad. The birds cage would be in my room where people don't smoke, but would that be enough? Or would my bird still be at risk.

Smoking around pet birds?

OK here goes:

For those that don't know this, birds bones are hallow and due to this smoking around a bird is just lack of common sense and stupid. Those of you who DO smoke, and claim not to smoke around your bird, it's still on your hands, and clothing, which then is carried to your bird, that is unless you change clothing or wash or shower after each smoke break.

This study is still on going to see what direct link it has to shortening the life span and how much direct smoking has on parrots. Studies have also shown that direct genetic links and poor immune systems compromise a lot of the studies.

As much common sense would have it, we all know humans should NOT smoke, but we know humans smoke and live well into their 90-100(George Burns) and others don't (genetic links). Which brings up the argument that either chemicals changed or genetics are changing faster then studies are done, which could be both!!

With more chemicals and compounds being used in foods, both humans and animals, it's hard to base studies over a long period of time, but none the less, Common sense still rules facts the air we breathe is not as pure as it once was and neither is the water we drink.

One question posted on here was whether smoking marijuana was posing a risk to a person's bird?

I find smoking anything in the presence of a bird to only compromise the health of the bird at some point in time according to the study so far. How much, we will know shortly!!

This can not be compared to a candle every now and then vs a candle every day, yes this study is being done too and there is no comparison.

What I find more apeasing is all the information that is being listed has NO dates as to when it was published!! It's old and out dated information

Is it ok to smoke hookah with a bird in the same room?

No, it is not okay to smoke around your bird, for the reasons you have already stated. The risks are high, which include respiratory problems and death. Birds are incredibly sensitive creatures and cannot handle the stress of such air pollutants. My ex-best friend's bird died within two weeks of being adopted by her family because her entire family smoked indoors.

Please be a responsible pet owner.

How bad is it if I smoke 420 in the same room as my parakeets?

All these answers and NOT ONE on that a birds bones are hollow, which is why it's bad for birds to be around toxic fumes!!!! Whether it be from cigarette smoke or illegal drugs or tefelon pans, or what ever the reason.

Birds have hollow bones, which cause them to absorb the toxic fumes which will cause death. This is a slow and much like strangling your bird. I think anyone who smokes around their bird should be brought up on animal cruelty charges!!

If you want to smoke around YOUR bird, it's your bird, you can do what you want! But also know, it's also considered animal cruelty, and charges can be filed against you.

Can i smoke near my parakeets?

If smoking is bad for you, it's 10 times worse for your parakeets. Please don't smoke anywhere near them because it will shorten their life span and it could even give them lung cancer. I bought two lovely parakeets from a yard sale before, and their previous owners smoked a lot. One parakeet, named flutter, one day got sick. My mom wouldn't let me take him to the vet since they are 'disposable' pets, and I did as much as I could for him, but he sadly passed away. He was only around 3 or 4 years old, which is a very young age for a parakeet to die at since they can live up to 10 to 15 years old or more. I later found out that it could be because he was in a house where they constantly smoked, and he had other owners before them so who knows what his first owner was like, but most likely, he died from all the smoke he was exposed to. The other parakeet, pretty-boy, is still alive right now, but he isn't in the best of health. He constantly tail bobs, which is a parrots way of catching their breath. When I first saw this, I freaked out and asked my mom to please take pretty-boy to the vet, but instead she called the vet to ask about pretty-boy and the vet said that he is tail bobbing because he was exposed to too much smoke and that's why he tail bobs. So even though pretty-boy is about 5 years old, I don't expect him to live much longer. Both Flutter and Pretty-boy were in bad health when I got them from all the smoke, so that shows how bad smoke is for parakeets.

Can pot smoke kill a spider?

THC is non-toxic for people. Non-human creatures respond differently to different things than people do. There’s also the whole size difference thing. I could hold a lighter flame to my arm for three seconds, and while it would burn and hurt like hell, it would not kill me. Hold a lighter flame to a spider, and it’s going to die. Inhale a bunch of smoke laced with THC and various other feel-good chemicals, and you’re going to get high. Blow a bunch of smoke on a spider and either the spider is really, really high, or you killed it.

Did your parrot or other bird ever get you in trouble?

Many years ago, when I first started with my rescue, I had taken in a Double Yellow Head Amazon. He had quite a personality and vocabulary to him.One evening I came home from work to find that the Department of Children and Family Services (sometimes called CPS) was waiting for me at my door. They told me that they had gotten several complaints from my neighbors about a baby that was crying constantly all day (they were even able to hear this while they were at my door), and they needed to investigate and make sure that the “baby” was okay and not abused. Now, I normally would not let workers like this in without a warrant, but I knew exactly what was going on. They must have thought I was crazy because I started laughing like crazy when they told me that they were investigating a possible case of child abuse.I then explained to them that I lived alone, but I also had a few birds, one of which cried just like a baby during the day while I was at work. So I let the workers into my house, and they started looking from room to room (there were 2 workers that came that day). All of a sudden I hear the one worker yell to the other “I found it! You’re not going to believe this one!” The other worker went in to my bird room, and there was the Amazon, just sitting there, crying like a baby. The workers did get a big laugh out of this, and they let me know that this was the first case that they ever had somebody turned in because of a bird.Shortly after that, this bird started calling everybody a “LIAR” too. This bird was so hilarious!

Secondhand smoke on a cockatiel?

I know that secondhand smoke is horrible for a bird, but i was wondering if the bird would be alright if she is never in the same room as the person who smokes in the house? My dad smokes but i want to adopt my friend's cockatiel and i wanted to make sure that she would be completely healthy in my house. So if she stays in my room and my dad smokes in another room, would it harm or kill her?

Can smoking cannibis around ur budgie kill them?

Any kind of smoke is very irritating to a birds respiratory system. You bird may have developed a respiratory infection,...or any kind of infection for that matter, smoke can even lead to infections of the digestive system, and eye problems. It is not a good idea to smoke in the same house when you have a bird. Smoking in another room does not solve the problem either, because smoke can very easily move from one room to another. Ever smell the clothes in the closet of those who smoke in their house??? They smell just like smoke. On the other hand, your bird could have gotten sick another way... If I were you, I would ask the vet about some preventitive antibiotics to give your other bird. He may have become infected (which happens all the time) from the bird that died. Clean the cage and every thing in it with soap and hot water. Then make a solution of 6 oz bleach to one gallon of water and wash the cage down with it. Let this stand for 10 min, then rinse well. Let it dry. Be sure to do the perches and food cups and toys as well. No..this bleach solution will NOT harm the bird. Vets use it all the time and we use it here at the aviary as well.
