Can You Hear The Wind Blow And Did You Know Your Stairway Lies On The Whispering Wind

Stairway To Heaven Meaning?

I always love to read the answers to this question when it's asked....

When I was 17 and learning to play guitar, I bought a guitar world magazine with Stairway in it. Included in the magazine was a small booklet dedicated to the anniversary of the song and the meaning behind it.

They had some lyrical expert go line by line and decipher it all to be a bunch of nonsense.

Turns out that (according to guitar world) that's exactly what it's about (according to Plant). They said the song was written on the fly and really had no deep meaning that everyone thinks it has....

Disappointing? I dunno...the more I learn about music the more I realize this is often the case. Take songs for what they are sometimes.....good tunes.....

Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven lyrics?

Theres a lady whos sure
All that glitters is gold
And shes buying a stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows
If the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for.
Ooh, ooh, and shes buying a stairway to heaven.

Theres a sign on the wall
But she wants to be sure
cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.
In a tree by the brook
Theres a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it makes me wonder.

Theres a feeling I get
When I look to the west,
And my spirit is crying for leaving.
In my thoughts I have seen
Rings of smoke through the trees,
And the voices of those who standing looking.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it really makes me wonder.

And its whispered that soon
If we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn
For those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter.

If theres a bustle in your hedgerow
Dont be alarmed now,
Its just a spring clean for the may queen.
Yes, there are two paths you can go by
But in the long run
Theres still time to change the road youre on.
And it makes me wonder.

Your head is humming and it wont go
In case you dont know,
The pipers calling you to join him,
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow,
And did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind.

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul.
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How evrything still turns to gold.
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll.

And shes buying a stairway to heaven.

Is Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven about Beren and Luthien?

When I answered this question it read Is Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven about Beren and Luthien? It seems highly unlikely, given that Stairway to Heaven was written in 1971 and the Silmarillion was published in 1977.True, Beren and Lúthien were mentioned briefly in The Lord of the Rings, in the poem Aragorn recites, but they were hardly a main focus of the story. I also can’t see any connection between the events described in that poem (basically, Beren chasing Lúthien around the forests of Doriath for a year until she lets herself be caught) and the song. It’s possible that Robert Plant was thinking of another Tolkien character, Lady Galadriel, when he wrote the song. Certainly some of the lines have that as a strong implication:There's a feeling I getWhen I look to the westAnd my spirit is crying for leavingAnd this part might be inspired by Frodo and Sam using the Phial she gave them:And as we wind on down the roadOur shadows taller than our soulThere walks a lady we all knowWho shines white light and wants to showHow everything still turns to goldWhether the lady who ‘shines white light’ and the lady in the first verse who’s sure that all that glitters is gold (and all who wander are lost?) are the same person is uncertain. The fact is, Plant himself wasn’t really sure of the meaning of what he wrote, and there are probably half a hundred different interpretations of Stairway out there. Maybe the piper who leads us to reason is a Wind in the Willows reference: who knows? There are certainly other Led Zeppelin songs with deliberate Tolkien references in them, but I don’t think it’s ever been confirmed or denied by any member of the band whether Stairway was one of them.

Who is the Piper Calling You to Join Him, in the song, Stairway to Heaven?

The Pied Piper. And it's whispered that soon, If we all call the tuneThen the piper will lead us to reasonAnd a new day will dawnFor those who stand longAnd the forests will echo with laughterYour head is humming and it won't goIn case you don't knowThe piper's calling you to join himDear lady, can you hear the wind blowAnd did you knowYour stairway lies on the whispering windWhile learning this song on the guitar (an obligatory rite of passage for anyone dabbling in guitar), I had to learn the lyrics as well. Lyrics are so much easier to memorize if you understand them. What do the lyrics of Stairway to Heaven mean? Not even Robert Plant can really tell you.Robert Plant spent much of the '70s answering questions about the lyrics he wrote for "Stairway." When asked why the song was so popular, he said it could be its "abstraction," adding, "Depending on what day it is, I still interpret the song a different way - and I wrote the lyrics."[1]It may not be beneficial to try terribly hard to read anything specific into the lyrics. Plant himself didn’t seem to have put a lot of conscious thought into creating a coherent message. My interpretation is that it is about yearning for something. Several lines refer to traveling in search of things. “She’s buying a stairway to heaven.” “Your stairway lies on the whispering wind.”So why the Pied Piper? I don’t think it’s about the original context of the Piper, a magical force who takes all the young from the village that cheated him. Instead, I think the Piper is all about a bill that comes due when you lust for something. Everything comes at a cost. The laughing echos in the forest are the other children who have been taken in the past.Footnotes[1] https://www.amazon.com/Led-Zeppe...

Who is "The Piper" in Stairway to Heaven?

"Then the piper will lead us to reason."

The piper alludes to the Pied Piper (of Hamelin), imagery for an inner calling that seems to pull us along. In western occultism, once a student has begun upon the path the next phase is known as “the pull of the way”. You are on the path, and in time it will lead you to happiness. The forests echoing with laughter suggests that those watching through the trees (previous verse) will rejoice when the rest of us catch up and join them.

"The piper's calling you to join him,
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow,"

If you hadn’t noticed by now, listening to the song (Stairway to Heaven) is drawing you along the path of the Lady, towards enlightenment. The spiritual aspirant is being drawn along by the “pull of the way”. This is the revolution the Hippie movement was hoping for.

Have you ever heard Pink Floyd's cover of "Stairway to Heaven"?

There's also supposely a Pink Floyd version of Knocking of Heaven's Door and Hotel California, but it;s just some mistakes people make online. I'll go search on youtube for it and try to figure out who sings it.

EDIT:
