OpenHatch - http://openhatch.org is a collection of open source projects and their bugs to help newbies start contributing to open source. You can easily filter projects based on your language preference, difficulty of bugs, availability of mentors etc. They also have nice tutorials to learn VCS like git to help work on your first patch.
I can't find any primary sources for my project?
Primary sources are exceedingly difficult to find, as you would have to find an artifact or a person who was alive at the time of the compass' invention. Six sounds a bit extreme. Perhaps your teacher meant secondary? In that case: "Lodestone Compass: Chinese or Olmec Primacy? Multidisciplinary Analysis of an Olmec Hematite Artifact from San Lorenzo, Veracruz, Mexico" by John B. Carlson speculates whether the compass' beginnings are from China or Olmec civilization. How can my open source project work help me during placements? When and where in the placement process can it help?
It won't help much, the best it can do is help in impressing the interviewers while placements, that too if they value such projects. It won't help while checked for being eligible for an interview or not(if there exist a screening process by the placement cell).In short it isn't of much help, if it requires a lot of effort, or causing a direct loss in other more important area it should be avoided, but in the end an open source project work is done for self interest rather than for a job/placement point of view.P.S: There are some projects way too good too, which would obviously help in placement, but if that was the case such a question would not be asked.So acc to me, one should go for such projects due to self interest and satisfaction only. Can be used to gain confidence in such areas too. But in all, it matters on the dedication, project work requires dedication and that comes only from interest rather than a desire for a good placement.
