Can You Negotiate A Non-profit Salary

Negotiating salary in a civil service position... Yes or No? Can you negotiate salary?

I recently got a job offer working for the state. The hirer told me the salary over the phone which I thought was odd, and I asked if it was negotiable and she said "No, I'm sorry, salary is not negotiable." She said I will receive a new-hire/benefits package in the mail. My question is: Is salary NOT negotiable because it's a civil service state job? I mean, isn't salary negotiable in almost any job or is it that cut-and-dry with state jobs?

Is it appropriate to negotiate salaries on job offers from non-profit institutions?

Yes it's ethically appropriate.  The fact that a university is "non-profit" means that they can't give money to shareholders.  Universities are billion dollar institutions, and they can afford these sorts of things.Any ethical qualms you may have in demanding a higher salary are likely to disappear once you find out how much the football coach makes or how much professors in the business and economics department makes.  If you don't demand your fair share, its going to end up in the pockets of the football team.If it still bothers you then demand a big salary and then donate it to the charity of your choice.

Should I negotiate my internship salary?

You don’t do internships for money, you do it for getting experience and putting something on your resume. Normally they don’t expect you to negotiate and usually you don’t negotiate an offer unless you already have something better or at least a solid prospect of something better.Anyway, an internship usually costs the company money because they will have to spend time training you and before you get really productive your internship is over. Most companies are doing internship so they can evaluate potential hiring candidates, not to make profit from their immediate work.So no, in my opinion you shouldn’t negotiate your internship salary.

How do Associates negotiate a higher salary after successfully fundraising for their venture capital firm?

Associates don't raise money from LPs. That doesn't happen. Partners raise money.

How do I negotiate travel in business class for my job offer?

You don’t.Everything is a test at this point with a potential employer. If you try to get a air fare upgrade, they will think you are a primadonna. In fact, if the subject comes up, you should say, “I would have been happy to take a bus here.”I know that you think your situation is “special” somehow, but I’m sure it is not. Even if it does not affect the opportunity, it will take away from your ability to negotiate substantive things like a higher starting salary.Sit in the cheap seats.

Do you allow the negotiation of your rates for your services?

The simple answer is - it depends. If you sell time, as people who deliver a service do, then once the moment for which you could have charged some money has gone, so has the money. It is the same with air tickets. If the plane leaves without all the seats filled, the income for those seats is lost forever. When do I allow my rates to be negotiated downwards? When I do not have an alternative lined up for the time that I will be using to provide the services AND there is very little likelihood to find an alternative client who will use my services for that specific time. The question is how much should you drop your rates by?I use the following guidelines:The client needs to make an offer on how much they are willing to pay.I then deduct all direct expenses and look at the gross profit before indirect expenses that I can make at the reduced rate.I have set myself a minimum charge that I want to make to go through the effort of supplying my services. If the profit is equal to, or exceeds my minimum charge I will still try and negotiate upwards, but not so vigorously as to risk losing the appointment to provide my services. If the profit is less than that, I look at my then current financial situation. If it is dire, I will accept the contract because any contribution is then better than nothing (you will lose the opportunity in any event.Hope this helps!I attach a copy of my book for free:The Beginner's Guide to Negotiation.pdf

Is 25,000 for a case manager position too low a salary?

I see your point about the median salary being 36,000 but you also have to take into account that that includes people who are well established in the field as well as people just starting working. So someone who is a case manager for 20 years will make 40,000 probably while someone who is just starting will make significantly less.

I'm just starting out with no experience in this field. I think I will take the job, stay at it for a few months, and then look for other positions with higher salary.
