There are too many regulations to be able to do it without losing your lighter. As Irene has said, the airlines will usually allow it, although I have been at one point told that for a zippo it must be completely dry and packed in an airtight approved hazmat container, too. They even sell those specifically for Zippos, and I bought one. Waste of money. Because airport security has their own rules, and they differ from airport to airport. And most of them won’t let you carry a zippo in. To make it more difficult, the security guy may just like your lighter and confiscate it.
