Microsoft have updated their Docx /open XML plugin for Mac office users. The add on requires Office 2004 or Office v.X in order to work and will not work with the upcoming Office 2008.

Neo Office for Mac continues to be an alternative for Mac users wishing to open Office 2007 file formats though text edit in OS X 10.5 (Leopard) will open docx files.

Word cannot open the file because the file format does not match the file extension?

Unless something or someone has gone in and corrupted the contents of those files, the most likely reason is that the file type was changed either from the new .docx type to the older .doc type or in the opposite direction.

To try to fix the problem, in Windows Explorer, change the file type to the opposite one. This will not affect the contents of the file, so if it doesn't work, just change it back. In either case, ignore the warning about "making the file unusable." You know what you're doing this time.

Good luck.

If you are unable to open a Word document on your device, it could be that the format of the file is not supported on the device or the file is corrupted. I suggest that you check the format of the file and see if it is supported by your device. You also may recover the file here: doc repair

What's the best way to open .docx files on a Mac?

The best way would be with Microsoft Word for Mac[1] or with the same via an Office 365 subscription.[2]Barring that, most modern office productivity suites include a word processor that can at least read .docx files. Many can also write to .docx format. How do I open a Microsoft Word .docx file that has problems with the contents?

I can think of at least four methods to try: 1.  Make sure you have the free extension downloaded and installed from Microsoft's Office web site that will enable your Office 2007 to open .docx files.  2. If you have a Google Docs account, you should be able to open it from there. The next two methods may cause you to lose some of the original document's formatting and special characters, but are worth a try if you have no other options.  3. Open File Explorer, copy the docx file, then change the name of the copy extension to .doc. 4. Open File Explorer, copy the docx file and change the extension to .rtf. 5. LAST RESORT:  Follow the steps above, changing the extension to .txt. This method will result in the loss of all formatting, including line breaks ad special characters and may not read punctuation marks correctly. These are often dependent on the font style and sizes used in the original. But if you just gotta have it, this should work unless there's a deeper problem with the file itself. Finally, when all else fails, see if you can get the source to send you the document saved as a .doc file or in the body of an email.

Difference between file.doc and file.docx?

Is there a difference between a file.doc and a file.docx? I attached an MS Word file to an email i recently sent and the recipient is now requesting for a .doc file so they can review the document. I thought it was already in .doc so i checked my sent items and the extension says .docx

Is there a difference between the two or there was just some problem that might have occured that made the file unreadable or something?

Hope someone could give a serious answer coz i would probably need to resend the file.

Thanks!
