Car Jerks At High Speeds And Loses Power And Acceleration

Car sputters/loses power or feels like stalling when I'm accelerating?

It sounds like you might need a new fuel filter or filters ( some cars have more than one ) or you may need a new fuel pump. You may have also got some bad gas.If you are wondering why your lights came on briefly, it was probably due to the fact the car was dying. Truth is, it could be alot of things.I would start with your fuel filter or filters first unless you just filled up or put alot of gas in your car.

Why does my car jerks when i accelerate?

Check the transmission fluid level, color and odor. If its brown or smells burned then it could cause problems with the transmission. If it feels like the car is:
jerking- it could be fuel related, restriction in catalytic converter or muffler

hesitating- short circuit in spark plug wires or fouled spark plugs.

engine rpms increase but slow increase in speed- transmission is slipping. Check the transmission fluid level and condition.

Why does my car feel jerky when I accelerate?

It could be anything, literally, anything. A clogged air filter, an air leak in the intake system, a dirty airflow sensor, dirty injectors, a failing fuel pump, a failing RPM sensor. Probably not bad plugs.Find an empty road and drive it at the jerky speed for several minutes, that may give the engine computer enough time and enough info to decide what the problem is and lock in an error code. If the “check engine” light comes on you have achieved that goal. Take the car to a service place or if you want read out the code yourself. The code may narrow down the problem.

Why does my car lose acceleration when driving down the road?

Something like that happened to me years ago. Driving home from work in the afternoon at speed on a state highway, out of the blue the car would begin to slow down gradually, even though I hadn’t touched the brakes and leaned on the accelerator to maintain speed. No dice. The car steadily continued to slow down, no response to the gas or throwing in the clutch (stick shift). All this time the motor sounded normal, no strange noises, no vibration in the steering, nothing abnormal but a gradual smooth steady slowdown. Nothing to do but put on the flashers and pull off on the shoulder. After a few minutes everything would seem to be OK and I could continue. This happened 3–4 times on the long drive home from work. Mechanics could find nothing wrong with motor, gas line/feed, etc. Only when reevaluating the brakes on the rack did they find the calipers closing on the front wheels (Jetta FWD).Probable cause: a few weeks earlier I was driving to work at 4:30 a.m. on a fall morning when my headlights picked up the carcass of a 4-point white tail buck lying smack in the middle of my lane. At 65 mph it was too late to swerve without losing control of the car, so I straddled the animal squarely, slight bump but otherwise apparently without damage. (I reported the deer to the police when I got to work.) Evidently the buck’s rack had affected the brake apparatus on my low-slung Jetta. Why the intermittent problem took so long to manifest is a mystery. It’s one strange sensation when your car suddenly slows down on its own like a camel that decides it wants to take a break and kneels down like you’re in it for nothing.

Why my Car jerks during acceleration and driving. Its a chevy spark ls 2008.Jerks present in all gears and in high and low speeds and felt usually higher with AC on.Car hesitates to accelerate .The check engine light is on.Pls clarify?

If you are feeling the jerk while you drive, there must be a problem with the clutch. As you are also noticing the check engine light is on, some power train systems maybe malfunctioning. Or there'd be an issue with the belts. Also check the engine oil level once.

Can a loose battery cable make your car jerk while driving and act like it's not getting gas?

When the car is in good working order and running, the alternator supplies all the load, including charging the battery. If the battery cable is loose, the battery may not charge. The rough running is due to a different problem.

What motorcycle has the best acceleration? i want a 600 but no higher. gsxr,cbr,r6,zx6r?

i rode a cbr 600rr and loved it but is there a 600 that is even faster? i heard the R6 is the best in acceleration. the gsxr comes 2nd then the ninja then the cbr. what is the true fastest 600. please don't send any links. just looking for personal opinions.

When i accelerate, my car stops accelerating then jerks back. whats wrong?

at what speeds does this happen, a variety of speeds, only when you begin to move, only at high speed?

check your automatic transmission fluid, this will be a small yellow dipstick on the front or back of the transmission, usually pretty far down into the motor compartment. on honda's this should be checked with the vehicle off. is the transmission full? and is the fluid a bright red color? or is the fluid dark red, black or brown?

whats the RPM's doing when the power is lost, the engine should idle @ 700-1200 RPM and be around 2000-3500 rpm when driving on the freeway.

if the RPM's drop when power is lost its likely the engine(air filter, fuel filter, fuel injETCors, ect)
if the RPM's continue at normal or higher than normal rates while power to the wheels is still lost, a transmission problem is likely to blame

What causes a car to lose power while driving?

In modern cars with engine management systems, it is the system itself that reduces power if it detects a problem with the engine.  A warning light will come and and the engine will go into 'limp home' mode, where speed it usually limited to 80km/h or lower.  Any number of things can cause this, but usually it relates to loss of something important, like a coolant leak, or low oil pressure.  Sometimes it can also be a false positive due to a fault in the management system itself. All internal combustion engines require three things to work; compression, fuel and ignition.  Degradation of any one of theses will result in lower engine performance.Loss of compression can result from engine wear, common in engines with several hundred thousand kilometers on the clock.  Engine efficiency is lost because gasses can escape past the piston rings.  Mechanical failure such as a blown head gasket can cause a similar loss.Blockages or degradation of the fuel supply, such as a worn fuel pump will cause loss of power for obvious reasons.Ignition faults stem from things such as a cracked distributor head, worn spark plugs, worn ignition coil or faulty spark plug leads.  They generally result in some cylinders not igniting the fuel/air mix, thus reducing the power.Loss of lubricant or coolant will cause the engine to overheat and then seize.  In this case, loss of power is 100%.Worn bearings in the engine will usually not reduce power much, they will keep working, making more and more noise, and then fail catastrophically, causing the engine to seize. It is also possible for timing chains to slip, adjustment screws to loosen in the carburetor, exhaust manifolds to develop leaks , and other minor mechanical faults to occur that will reduce engine power.  This can happen suddenly or gradually over time.

My car has trouble accelerating after stopping. What could be the cause of this?

There are several possible issues but just going off of what I have seen so often in the past I would put money on your automatic transmission fluid being low. If you can, please check it and reply back. If its low it will take a second to build up pressure in the right places before working and will force you to get to a higher rpm before you can accelerate. The other answers above make good points generally but I don't think general tune up issues are the problem because the complaint is only at accelerating from a stop. If your car runs poorly at idle or before it warms up, time to go through the tune up check list.  If the only thing it's doing is delaying acceleration before a stop, check your Trans fluid and be sure to check it correctly. Your owners manual should tell you how. If not reply back and I will explain.
