Chevy Duramax 6.6l Wont Start Unless Pluged In For A While What Could Cause This

Is it natural for an old diesel vehicle to blow black smoke on acceleration? Or is this a sign of a worn engine?

This is soot. It occurs when too much fuel is injected into the combustion chamber for it to burn completely. In older engines, the fuel system will make assumptions about how well the engine is breathing and the maximum injection volume will be tuned accordingly. If the engine has trouble breathing, e.g. due to a clogged air filter, the assumption will be wrong.Modern engines have control units that actively measure air mass and make appropriate adjustments.

As a truck enthusiast, what does your rig say about you? What kind of modifications have you done to personalize your truck?

Mine is a 1996 F-250 4x4 5 speed. From 1994 to 1997 Ford put their new Powerstroke turbodiesel engine into the 1990’s “old body style” (OBS) chassis. This created a truck with classic looks but the performance of something a decade newer.I bought mine for dirt cheap with a ton of miles on it, over 300,000 now. I put snow tires on the factory wheels and bought a second set of wheels and mud terrain tires (pictured) for summer. All my tires are OEM size (about 32″) for maximum fuel economy. Someday I might swap the front TTB’s for a solid Dana 60 and do a little lifting, but it will sit at stock height until then. The previous owner put F-350 springs in the rear plus add-a-leafs. This gives it a stiff, rough ride but I can carry enormous amounts of weight in the bed. I added a tool box for lockable storage and in the summer I have a full size ladder rack on top which I use for kayaks and canoes. It looks better without the rack though. The body is in much worse shape than it appears in this backlit photo, but each little scratch and ding is the scar from a battle won and a memory made. The front bumper was stock until I hit a deer with it. Pete Green's answer to If you hit a deer and it was severely injured and suffering, would you put it down if you could safely do it or would you wait for the police? It was rendered unusable so I replaced it with a bumper off an old camper trailer that just happened to fit pretty well. I plan to weld up a custom bumper with D-rings over the summer.Inside I have three aftermarket gauges: one for boost pressure, one for exhaust gas temperature, and one for ambient cabin temperature. Green LED strips tied into the dimmable dash lighting illuminate the floor and match the gauge cluster. I added the EGT gauge when I installed a 6-position tuning chip.I hope what this rig says about me is that I do care a little bit about presentation, but the emphasis is definitely on utilitarian performance. It’s a workhorse above all else. Thanks for the a2a.

I am in the process of replacing a 6 cyl. with a 350 V8 in my '82 Chevy PU I am?

well...your 82 is an early computerized vehicle [ unless it's a truck, then it depends on the model] so you should have the H.E.I. ignition system. now does your 350 have the same ignition? except for two extra spark plug terminal,s? if so then red wire,s are hot lead,s, black are ground,& what,s left are for tachometer/computer information...you should be able to connect the brown & green together but without researching the wiring diagram,s I can't say with certainty...it's been a long time since I worked on that sort of modification...also does your 350 distributor have pick up coil? next to the ignition module? if so you will have 2 extra wire,s to contend with...is it equipped with a vacuum advance module or pod? these thing,s should be taken into account if your going to use the stock computer...your best bet would be to use the computer & ignition system [ as well as all other sender,s & control,s] from a donor vehicle of the same or close year & model....good luck!
