Should Janet Jackson be inducted in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
Hell yeah. In fact, she is one of the most qualified among the current list of nominees, in my humble opinion. She is one of the five artists I have been voting on on daily basis in the fan vote.Some say that she doesn’t rock enough. Well, so what? The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame never was an institute dedicated to the celebration of guitar rock only. They always have been open to genres, especially R&B and soul: Sam Cooke, Ray Charles and James Brown were among the first artists inducted in the hall. What the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame aims to do, is show the perpetuation of rock n roll from its roots in the 1940s and the revolution that followed in the 1950s on. And this means that it also includes artists from genres that you might not hear on your favourite classic rock radio station, like soul, reggae, funk & folk, doo wop & hip hop. And I like that. I prefer a Hall of Fame that has a broad definition of rock n roll over one with a narrow vision.(Some have suggested that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame should change its name to the Modern Popular Music Hall of Fame or something like that to better reflect their intentions. I fully support that.)My main argument over why Janet Jackson deserves to be inducted, is that she popularized a style of hiphop-influenced R&B pop with her third album, Control (1986). That style would later be known as New Jack Swing and would become the template of contemporary R&B, one of the dominant styles of popular music of the past 30 years. The careers of artists like Mary J Blige, TLC, Usher, Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Rihanna and Bruno Mars, among others, can be traced back to Control. Together with her producers Jam & Lewis, she started a sound that still resonates in the charts to this day.
