Coconut Oil Does Not Work On My Hair

Coconut oil does not work on my hair?

The best can think of is Morrocan keratin shampoo and conditioner products or Kerastase range they have proteins in it or you could also try tressamme hair range especially keratin smooth although it contains sulfates which tends to dry out the hair.

Another idea is too use a good keratin hair masque on your hair when it is dry and leave it on at least 20-30 mins for the goodness to penetrate every single strand and than wash off with luke warm (NOT HOT) water and than rinse briefly with cool water. Repeat this process once a week at least and make sure you use a good keratin oil such as L'Anza Keratin Healing Oil Lustrous Finishing Spray that stuff is amazing!!

"...it may prevent damage to the cuticle in grooming procedures involving abrasion. Obvious is the lubricating effect of oil on fiber friction, which reduces abrasive damage, especially in combing."Coconut oil is mostly a triglyceride of lauric acid and is hydrophobic. Application of coconut oil as a pre-wash conditioner coats the hair and inhibits the penetration of water into the hair. A small part of it is also absorbed in to the hair during the wash when the fiber is swollen. Introduction of this hydrophobic component reduces the swelling propensity of the cuticle, which limits the upward curving of the surface cuticle. This reduces the chipping away of the cuticle cells, which reduces protein loss, as observed in this work."Because of the  molecular weight of coconut oil, it penetrates the cortex, whereas mineral oil, being a hydrocarbon, does not penetrate the hair at all...It is possible sunflower oil does not penetrate the fiber because it has a bulkier structure as a result of double bonds in the fatty acid chain. Coconut oil triglyceride has a linear structure, which is why it solidifies at room temperature, whereas sunflower triglyceride has an irregular ball-like structure because the fatty acid chains fold on themselves due to one or two double bonds. This is why sunflower oil is a liquid at room temperature. It is likely that it does not penetrate the fiber as well as the coconut oil. This may be the reason why the WRI (percentage water retention index) is low for coconut oil as compared to mineral and sunflower oils."Source: Effect of mineral oil, sunflower oil, and coconut oil on prevention of hair damage^ A really interesting article I found on Google Scholar.

How long does it take for coconut oil to work?

Does coconut oil really work on hair?

before putting down the cash, what caused it to get dried out in the first place? have you been using a lot of product on it? have you been dying, bleaching, etc a lot? have you been straightening your curly hair? If the hair is damaged you need a conditioner that you leave in and let it do its magic.

according to eHow: When selecting a conditioner, look for key ingredients such as panthenol and glycerin (used to bind water content to the hair); oils such as lanolin, olive and honey (used to replenish moisture); butters such as shea, peanuts and coconuts; and citrus extracts such as lemon and orange (used to restore shine).

now my favorite trick: after washing and towel drying your hair, apply mayonaise to your damp hair massaging it all the way through. then wrap your head (I'm not kidding) in either a warm towel or with plastic wrap for about 10 minutes. the mayo has natural oils, eggs, and vinegar which are GREAT for your hair and the plastic wrap will help warm it so that it takes better effect. after 10 - 15 minutes, rinse the mayo out and style as usual.

good luck

If you use other oils such as Olive, Soya, Corn, Sunflower, Cottonseed, etc, those will make your hair smell bad. It is because these polyunsaturated oils easily go rancid. They are not stable when exposed to air. What happens after a while is they get oxidized and will smell bad.The most stable oil is Coconut oil. It’s shelf life is 2 years. In fact, I was told that in our Philippine Coconut Authority, a sample of coconut oil in an opened bottle was stable for 20 years! I have not seen the literature on that though. If you want some coconut odor on your hair, use Organic Virgin Coconut Oil. On the other hand, if you don’t want any coconut odor, use the typical Refined Coconut Oil - it is deodorized.
