College For Voice Acting Any Suggestions

What are some good colleges for voice acting?

Voice acting is one of those pursuits where you probably have to write your own curriculum. There are a few specially focused institutes - Voicetrax SF in the California San Francisco Bay Area, for example - where working pros and industry folks are on the roster and there is a clear progression of Intro, Intermediate and Advanced level courses. But, for the most part there are not too many examples of that. However, regular acting courses, improv work and other training pays significant dividends in voice acting. Those can probably be found in any local college near you. If not there, then search out into your community. If you have good acting training, then Voice Acting skills are really a refinement.Because of that, I’d pay attention to those individuals who offer coaching services and - more importantly - are widely recommended by other working actors. Voice acting is a specialized craft, and working with someone who understands the business can be extremely helpful. In most areas, there are workshops and other training opportunities. Recently, there are more good quality coaches making themselves available via skype or other online methods. Anyone worth working with will respond to your inquiry, and might recommend other instructors or resources near you.

Song Suggestions for College Audition?

I did some checking and this VIP information seems legit (even though the conservatory website doesn't mention it), but make sure you fill out the application and confirm your appointment date.

This is the official website of AMDA.

Please call the school if you have any questions concerning your audition. However, there is a lot of information regarding audition requirements and you MUST adhere to them to be taken seriously.

I'm not sure if you are enrolling in the dance program (in which case you can probably use your Avril Lavigne song as your dance music). If you plan to SING, you cannot sing a pop song. It HAS to be musical theatre or classical music repertoire.

This is also not American Idol where they want to hear any sob stories. They are probably going to be more interested in your dance-voice-acting training. You can certainly draw inspiration from your experiences and life, but keep in mind that they will also be teaching you some choreographed routines (if you are entering the dance program). Keep your focus on your dancing. That's what will count in the end.

For music and theatre candidates, in addition to songs, you will need to pick a monologue which must be from a published play--you can't write something original based on your life no matter how inspiring or moving it may be.

What is a good VA college for voice acting?

I am about to into enter my last year of high school my parents have been pressuring me to find a college i would like to go to. The problem would be that I cannot find a good college in Virginia for voice acting (I'd like to keep as much pressure off my parents financially as I can).

So does anyone know of any good colleges for an aspiring voice actor? and (if it comes down to it) what would be the best, cheapest school out of VA?

How many years of college is recommended for voice acting?

You do NOT need to go to college to be a voice actor.

Getting into voice over acting is a hefty investment. Largely because you have to invest thousands of dollars in putting together a demo reel that shows your range as a voice actor. There are different types of voiceovers. Commercials are the biggest chunk. Then there are promo, narrative, foreign language, audiobook, and animation. In animation, you want to create original characters, NOT imitations of Bart Simpson, etc.

Before forking over thousands of dollars to get your reel, get a lot of training before. Good training consists of proper vocal exercises and warmup, proper diction in American standard English, breaking down a VO script into phrases, and being able to make that script come to life with your imagination and not just some regular read. Improv is also highly recommended as well for you want to be able to loosen up and use your imagination when you're in that isolation chamber (recording booth).

Once you have a demo done, you mail them out to Voice Over Agents. They're the ones who get you auditions.

If I had to recommend a book, I think The Art of Voice Acting, 3rd edition by James R. Alburger is a good place to start. He also gives recommendations for other Voiceover resources as well.

What College Major would an aspiring Voice-Actor go for?

Ok, first off, acting definitely requires a college major. No way you can just step into acting without training.
Anyways, many schools have film/TV studies, and some even have screen acting degrees, which would probably include voice-over acting. I don't know what area you're looking at, but sites like CollegeBoard can help you find what schools would have that major.
Hope that helps. If you really want to get into any kind of acting, get the proper training and you'll at least have a litle chance of being successful.

Who are some good voice acting coaches in USA?

I answered a similar question about coaching resources in the Los Angeles area here: Dale Leopold's answer to How does one break into doing voiceover work? Are there voiceover classes one can take within the Los Angeles area? Some of the coaches I refer to in that answer provide training by phone as well as in person. While it's nice to have face-to-face contact with a coach, it's certainly true that great results can also be achieved by phone or Skype sessions. If you're not in LA and would prefer in-person coaching, let me know where you are located and I'll see if there's anyone in your area I can recommend.
