What makes a complete sentence?

Complete sentences, eh?Well the others are correct in saying you need a subject and a verb, but there's another requirement. If you want a grammatically correct English sentence, the sentence must express a complete and self-contained thought.Check this out:Wombats are awesome. That sentence has a subject (wombats) and a verb (are) along with a complement (awesome), and it's a complete thought. Now watch this:Because wombats are awesomeUh oh. Notice anything wrong with this? It has a subject and a verb, but it leaves you hanging. You need more to finish the thought. This is not a complete sentence, even though it has all the necessary parts. This is when the word clause comes into play. A clause has a subject and a verb, but it doesn’t necessarily have a complete thought. Independent clauses have a subject, a verb, and can stand alone because they express a complete thought. Dependent clauses have a subject and a verb, but they cannot stand alone because they don’t express a complete thought (like my example above, most often because they have a subordinating conjunction or a relative pronoun, but that’s a more in-depth grammar lesson). The simplest form of a grammatically correct sentence you can make is one independent clause by itself—a simple sentence. To be called a legitimate sentence, you need a subject, a verb, and a complete thought. I’d need to add an independent clause to my dependent clause:I want a pet wombat because wombats are awesome. So yeah, subjects and verbs are important, but make sure you’ve completed the thought, or you’re left with a fragment.

Is "yes" a complete sentence?

Yes. See how easy that was?It depends, however, on how you define a sentence. I prefer: a statement that expresses a complete thought. The reason the single word yes can express a complete thought is that it is always a response, and there is an implied subject and verb that reflect the question the yes responds to. So my yes above is simply a short form for:Yes, it is.This is a common structure in a question and response pair. The question normally includes an interrogative adverb plus a subject and verb. The response is a matching adverb, like yes, or an equivalent adjective, like sure, without the subject and verb since it supplied implicitly by the question.Really, is that all there is to it?Yes, really.

Is "Thank you" a complete sentence?

I suppose so. It just has an implied subject: (I) thank you. Just like "Sit down!" has an implied subject of You.

Is “I think I can?” a complete sentence?

No, it is not both in written and spoken forms because the main verb is missing as well as the object(s). In such an example, the incomplete part will be recoverable from the preceding discourse. For example, ‘Do you think you can lift a load weighing 95 kgs? ‘ Most likely the answer could be, either ‘(Yes) , I think I can - do what? - (lift it) or I think I can (lift a load weighing 95 kgs). So, from this simple example you can see that some information is missing and leave the sentence hanging. In normal, friendly conversations we usually use short/elliptical and contracted sentences. If someone asks you: ‘What’s your name?’ We would expect a short answer, such as John, Masanja or Grace. It would sound artificial to say: ‘My name is John.’ The new information in that sentence /utterance is John. In spoken, stress will be placed on John and the rest will be unstressed.

How would you complete this sentence: "All I want _______"?

All I want is to wake up this morning and hear the birds chirping in their small, round, nests, built from scavenged twigs. All I want is to walk up my red-carpeted stairs and make breakfast in a rusty pan from the depths of my cabinet and eat it ravenously with my fingers. All I want is to glimpse the shapes of the clouds before they get lost in the car exhaust. All I want is to hear the shouts of kids on the playground as I write stories in my paper notebook with electric green pen.All I want is to sit on a stone bench with my friends and tell them about the squirrel that scampered across the piano in our house before darting back outside. All I want is to write the last words of my homework assignment by the crackling fire, then lie down for five minutes, tracing the maze of cracks in the ceiling with my eyes. All I want is to take a warm, soothing shower, and daydream about new adventures and sing new songs until I've ran out of hot water. All I want is to fall asleep to the whispers of the moon, the chatter of the stars, and the enchanting, utter darkness of the night sky.Just for clarification, this story is fictional.
