Are Conservatives more tolerant than Liberals?
Liberals think they're more tolerant because they tolerate a number of high-profile things that conservatives don't tolerate, such as homosexuality, prostitution, abortion, and marajuana (your list of tolerences may vary, of course. You may not tolerate pot, while some conservatives may have no problem with homosexuals. This is just a starting point for the purposes of my answer here). There are things and people that liberals can't (or won't) tolerate that conservatives tolerate just fine. Religious people, for example. Many liberals just plain HATE people who believe in God. Worse, they can't stand the idea that people who believe in God would like to see God's influence in government and schools. Many liberals have a low tolerence for shows of patriotism and anything to do with the military. Liberals tend to look down on patriots. I've heard some describe anyone who loves the USA as mindless sheep who don't really know what's going on. I'm not saying liberals hate the USA (although you must admit some do), but your average liberal isn't out there waving flags, and I don't know any who get choked up over the national anthem. Many liberals think we'd have universal peace if we'd just disband the military and throw away our nukes. Liberals won't tolerate a successful business. Well, unless said business never caused any small business owners to lose sales. Liberals HATE Wallmart like conservatives hate abortions. And Microsoft? Big oil companies? So if you're a successful businessman, especially in the oil industry, who loves his country and prays regularly, liberals will universally hate you. George Bush never had a chance. As for race, I think the idea that one party or another is racist was invented by the liberals. I've never met anyone who espoused racist doctrine. And the only person I've met who's openly sexist was a lawyer with a SIGNED picture of Bill Clinton in his office.
The far-right conservatives whine about Google's intolerance of James Damore, but don't they also tolerate the opinions of the minorities and of the liberals? Aren't they auto-contradictory and hypocritical? See my comment.
I never heard a far-right conservative accepting and tolerating the opinions of the minorities (atheists, gays and, non-Christians and non-whites)and of the liberals and now they are complaining and whining about the intolerance of Google with James Damore… I do not understand them!Really, you haven't? I have no problem with them expressing their opinions, as long as they show me the same courtesy, and don't try to force me to violate my beliefs.I would also dare say that most Conservatives are like myself. Are conservatives or liberals more tolerant?
To answer this question honestly, one would need to propose what is meant by "diversity."If you're talking about racial/ethnic diversity, and further, meaning just the "right" mixture of White, Black, Asian, Native American, etc., then I would say that at the surface, the answer is that self-described conservatives tend to be less embracing of phenotypic diversity. It's not quite that simple, as stated versus revealed preferences - in this case, where one chooses to live at a sub-census tract level, the schools one attends - I think might show that there is not terribly much difference.If you're talking, however, about intellectual, political, economic, or philosophical diversity, I would say that the results are much, much less mixed. Look at how, for example, the "liberal" city of New York votes, or San Francisco. Politically, Manhattan or Marin County, California vote overwhelmingly in one direction. The upper West Side of Manhattan votes more predictably "liberal" than say, suburban Dallas, Texas does. Make no mistake, the two are reliably Democratic and Republican, respectively, but the pluralities are eye-popping in some cases in ostensibly "liberal" precincts.Intellectually, there was quite a brouh-ha-ha at, of all places, Harvard a couple of years ago. Harvard, the premier university in the US, should be a model of open discussion of ideas. But when a self-described conservative asked why so few fellow travellers were at Harvard - hinting (without evidence, to be fair) that there may be some biases at play - he was met with comments that conservative students in fact should not feel welcome at Harvard, and the Crimson even suggested that such students perhaps should go elsewhere. I've known equal numbers of hard-core progressives and hard-core conservatives. This is anecdotal, of course, but my own personal experiences are that the distribution of willingness to listen - rather than simply ridicule and dismiss - opposing ideas is not terribly different in the two groups.
Why don't conservatives understand that the only thing liberals cannot tolerate is their hate and intolerance?
