Could Someone Read/translate This Urdu Inscription

Why is there an Urdu inscription on the steps of the Amritsar Temple, or is it just my misunderstanding?

There are some, you are right. The reason, is pretty clear, Urdu was the national language of India, before 1947 and Lahore was the capital, of Punjab. So, Urdu is majorly a language used in India prior to partition and after it, they made Hindi as the national language and Urdu was taken up by the Pakistan, basically to me partition seems like a great business writing this answer.Everything was common to all, and everything that was common, was changed after the partition as if nothing was common ever. Divide and rule they say

Could someone translate in English the meaning of the qawwali 'Mainu Yaar Di Namaaz' sung by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan?

This is a beautiful Sufi song in urdu and Punjabi. I am by no means an expert of urdu so line by line translation would be bit difficult. But the basic meaning of the song is that the poet keeps his beloved(God) in highest regard. The poet mentions that he is not worldly wise and doesn’t want to understand religious rituals. He just wants to love wholeheartedly. For your clarity I am trying to translate few lines though not word by word:sanu zara ni aundi samajh mulla, te ilm te waaz kalaam waalirakh thap kitaab shitaab saathi, kar sifat koi yaar de naam waaliTranslation: The poet says that O mulla (an Islamic religious teacher ) I don’t understand your religious scriptures. I only want to talk about my beloved and no one else. I only want to praise my beloved and talk about him.mainu yaar di namaaz padh lain de, shara di gal pher das layinkaaba jaan ke dawaare ohde bain de, shara di gal pher das layinTranslation: The poet is so much deep into love with his beloved that he says that for him talking about his beloved is his namaaz (the ritual prayers prescribed by Islam to be observed five times a day) and he is not interested to know or talk about sharia (Islamic canonical law based on the teachings of the Koran and the traditions of the Prophet prescribing both religious and secular duties). Here poet also mentions that for him the holiest place is his beloved’s place and not kaba (most sacred Muslim pilgrim shrine). The poet is telling others that leave me alone in my endeavor. You might explain the religious laws afterwards.Another meaning that it depicts is that the poet’s love for Allah/God is beyond the literate and monotonous inscription of Islam/ReligionHope it helps.Cheers!!!

How was Alexander able to maintain control of his vast empire?

He was able to maintain his empire by treating people right in his kingdom. He never let outsiders come and take over the kingdom. And when he went into battle he fought with courage, bravery, and heart. He was and could have been a one man army if he really wanted to.

Why did Malaysia and Singapore choose a decrepit language like Tamil as one of their official languages instead of Hindi?

This is the most ridiculous question.I am not a Tamilian, but ä MalayaleeI must say hats of to Tamil and Tamilians for keeping the language as most up to date language. There are 16 or so Indian languages on the Indian rupee note, so why is only one of them is a national language outside India ? Simple, Tamil kings influence spread to the Far East and even up to northern part of India (hence the name Gangai Kanda Cholan)Now back to he topic, person asking this question has probably (sic!), very little Knowledge of Tamil. If Ms. Madhunisha can give Hindi, Malayalam or other Indian Language equivalents of the following English words with Tamil translations in parenthesis, I can say that other Indian languages are keeping up with the times and that they are not DECREPIT !Computer (Ganini)SMS (Kurun cheythi)email (min anjal)internet (inayam)web page (inaya pakkam)heavy vehicle (gana raka vaahanam)I can go on.. but the idea is not to show off my limited knowledge of Tamil words and make mistakes.Trust the richness of Tamil as per the above samples showing how progressive the Tamil language is.Hopefully you can refrain from painting other languages as bad in an open forum, in order to promote a language of your preference,You could always send official request to the Singapore or Malaysian government informing that Tamil is a DECREPIT language and Hindi should be made an official language of these two countries in place of Tamil. I am sure you will get an appropriate answer to your question as above.Brgds
