Help with a recursive counting problem?

I'm looking for a little more help, someone to walk me through this practice problem.

6. Suppose on December 31, 2000, a deposit of $100 is made in a savings account that pays 10% annual interest. So one year after the initial deposit, on December 31, 2001, the account will be credited with $10, and have a value of $110. On December 31, 2002 that account will be credited with an additional $11, and have value $121. Find a recursive relation that gives the value of the account n years after the initial deposit.

I have an idea of what these problems are, just not how to do them.

Help with a Counting Techniques word problem?

I know I ask a billion math questions a day, but I'm taking a 7-week college algebra class (bottom line, I need help, ha).

...right now, this problem's bugging me:

In how many ways can the manager of a baseball team arrange his batting order of nine starters if he wants his best hitters in the top four positions?

I think it's a combination problem, but C (9,4) does not produce the answer that is in the book (2880).

Discrete Math counting problem?? please help!?

How many strings of 8 English letters are there:

a.) contain no vowels, letters can be repeated
b.) contain no vowels, letters can't be repeated
c.) start with a vowel, letters can be repeated
d.) start with a vowel, letters can't be repeated
e.) contains at least 1 vowel, letters can be repeated
f.) contains exactly 1 vowel, letters can be repeated
g.) start with X and contains at least 1 vowel, letters can be repeated
h.) start and end with X and contains at least 1 vowel, letters can be repeated

Please let me know why like I know that
a.) 21^8 because 26-5 = 21 which is the alphabet - vowels and since letters can repeat then 21 letters can be in each of the 8 spaces of the string.
b.) 21 x 20 x 19 x 18 x 17 x 16 x 15 x 14, this is because it starts without vowels so 21 and since letters cannot repeat the next letter selected must be 1 less than the 1st.

Please help me solve for the rest.
Thanks

Instax Mini 90 film count problem. Help?

I remember this question and I'm sorry you're still having trouble. However, you are not describing how the problem was "fixed" so it's hard to speculate what is going on since it clearly was not actually fixed.

The other thing is, you only have TEN, not 18 or 20 shots in one pack of film for this camera. The counter is a digital LCD type and it counts down from 10 after the dark slide has been ejected. If the frame counter indicates you have 18 or 20 shots, it is drastically out of calibration and, again, as has been suggested, it needs to be returned for repair or replacement because this is nothing that the user can service.

Good luck and please, if you continue to post about this or anything else, be thorough in explaining what you have done in attempt to resolve the issue so that we can help you better.

Nick, it's good that you suggest getting an estimate, however, all Instax 90's are new and still under warranty. Given that this is an electronic problem, the camera will likely be replaced rather than repaired.

What are some good books that contain counting problems in combinatorics?

I would recommend Proofs that Really Count: The Art of Combinatorial Proof given the current amount of detail in the question. You should also see the following closely related questions on Quora: Which book should I read for introduction/intermediate discrete mathematics? What are the best books about combinatorics?

What are the characteristics of counting problems that allow use of the permutation?

If the order does matter it is a Permutation.

A Permutation is an ordered Combination.

To help you to remember, think "Permutation ... Position"

There are basically two types of permutation:

•Repetition is Allowed: such as the lock above. It could be "333".
•No Repetition: for example the first three people in a running race. You can't be first and second.

The “Pile High Deli” offers a “simple sandwich” consisting of your choice of one of five different kinds of bread with your choice of butter or mayonnaise or no spread, one of three different kinds of meat, and one of three different kinds of cheese, with the meat and cheese “piled high” on the bread. In how many ways may you choose a simple sandwich?
