Describe The Culture Of America/usa

What are some American cultural values?

the whole do it yourself mentality- "rugged individualism" or pull yourself up by your bootstraps ideology

the belief in the myth of "rags to riches" which tells people that if they work hard they will be rich and successful. (Nevermind those folks who just work themselves to death! )

Christianity (or at least 1 God)- its on our $$ In God We Trust

Freedom of Speech/ the right to express oneself

personal freedoms - govt should not tell us who we cn marry, how many kids we can have, etc

What truly defines "American culture?"?

I honestly don't think there is an American culture that isn't shared or influenced by other cultures. Also American culture is so vast depending on cultural groups and what part of the country you're in. I think the definition that you are looking for doesn't exist. I do think this is the beauty of the the country: its culture is diversity which is totally unique to any other country in the world.

Cultural similarities between Canada and America?

Canada and America are both multi-ethnic, multi-racial societies, based on the principles of representative democracy. While Canada has Parliament, the U.S. has Congress, but they function in a similar fashion. Canada, of course, still pays homage to the Queen, but, as is true in every modern society, the monarchy is the titular head of government only, not a functioning part of the actual governing system.

Canadians and Americans share many aspects of their cultures and have been each other's major trade partners for many decades. There is close cooperation between our military establishments, including mutual assistance in our space programs.

The U.S. and Canada have been allies in every war since the turn of the twentieth century, although our governments have not always agreed on strategy and tactics. Canada has always been more favorable to a diplomatic approach than has the U.S.

We tend to like the same movies, watch the same TV shows, and listen to the same music. Basically, we share a common language that is much closer than Canadian English and British English or American English and British English. Of course, Canada is technically bi-lingual, although French is used mainly in Quebec. The U.S. has a great many Spanish speakers, not just in the Southwest (Mexican Americans), but also in and around Florida (Cuban Americans), and New York (Puerto Rican Americans).

I've been to about half of the states and three provinces of Canada, and I've observed far more similarities between the two nations than differences.

Why do African Americans have no culture?

Well I know African Americans have their own culture but I just want to know why they dont have their natural culture that they came to the USA with during slavery.

Most blacks in other countries still play drums, wear African clothing, know a lot about Africa, cook African delicacies, play African sports...etc, but in the USA you would never really see an African American doing that. They more curve towards other races culture when it comes to food, clothing...etc

Do you think its because of the population size and the influence that the slave owners had on them? or is it the media?

It felt weird when I asked an African American if he knew where Ethiopia was, he thought it was in the Caribbean. I can bet all my money that an Indian born in the US knows where SriLanka or Pakistan is; same goes for an Asian person born int he US knowing exactly where Thailand or japan is.

So whats the problem with African Americans, are they ashamed? An African American made fun of my accent once and all the others started to laugh, so I am guessing they think its funny. Whats the world coming to when an African looks down on people from their mother land.......I guess the white man and media succeeded in brain washing them

How would you describe the Midwest culture of the United States?

The original Mid-west was the old NW territory, north of the Ohio River and mainly east of the Mississippi. That area has been expanded in more modern definition to include areas south and west of the original, but with rather flexible boundries. The general occupation centered on family farming, with heavy industry in Detroit and Cleveland. Chicago is a rail center and was at one time the head of the meat industry. The culture is one of hard work and an attempt to “bootstrap” from lower class status to a middle class. Higher education is a part of that process and there are many quite acceptable universities located there.

What are the main cultural differences between Latin American culture and American culture?

In Latino culture, the needs of the group (read: Family) take precedence over the needs of the individual. Because of this, there are noticeable differences when it comes to family relationships with Anglos and Latinos. Hispanics are very close with their relatives and have high respect for their elders.First example I noticed between Latino and Anglos is that extended family can extend to non-relatives. I have “aunts”, “uncles” and “cousins” but they aren't related by either of my parents, they are just good family friends of my parents that go back years.Second example is that Caregiving beliefs are very different between Latinos and Anglos. Very few Latino Americans will put their elderly parents in a nursing home. Latino elderly parents either move in with their grown children or stay at their own house and hire a Hispanic live-in caregiver. The attitude is “they took care of us, now we take care of them”. Some Latinos consider it a disgrace to put their parents in a nursing home (“they worked so hard to give you a good life here”). Other reasons you don't see Hispanics as much in nursing homes are the costs and some elderly parents know very little English—no point in putting them in a nursing home if they can’t communicate with caregivers or other residents in English, that will make them very unhappy! Nursing home is at the bottom of the list or absolute last resort for many Latino families. Over time this view is changing but not much. Even I have my long term plans to move closer to my parents as they get older. It is truly hard for me to imagine them in a nursing home!Third example I noticed is that Latinas who were raised in the United States typically have ingrained American beliefs such as being independent and being equal to males so they tend to marry outside the Latino culture. However, when it comes to mothering, they tend to identify themselves as Latina. If they work full time outside of the home, they either have their Latina relative or a Latina nanny take care of their children. They like the warmth as well as the opportunity for the child to be bilingual.

Describe one way U.S. society or culture has changed significantly from the 1920s to today?

Prohibition, a crazy idea of using the law to forbid the consumption of alcohol, has been replaced by an equally futile, and disastrous attempt to use the law to forbid the consumption of narcotics. Both have promoted crime, police corruption and similar evils, but whereas Prohibition only affected the USA, the American government has used its power and influence to oblige most of the rest of the world to implement its disastrous war on drugs.
So the thing prohibited has changed significantly (the White Man's drug of choice is now tolerated,, but the impact of the prohibition on society has been much the same now "hard drugs" have replaced booze as the great NO NO---only worse.
