Do A Lot Of Architects Work From Home

Can an architect work from home?

I do. I opened a small firm in 2003 but the recent great recession caused architectural work to greatly reduce. Architectural employment dropped to 60% of usual. At a point during that time where I could not keep staff I moved to a home office. I do commercial architecture and clients seldom come to a firm for meetings so I set meetings at the client’s location. I still have the same clients and as their capital projects gear up again I work from home. If I need staff for a project I can find the right people to contract with. I also have relationships with other firms who I either partner with or staff from time to time. In the latter case I sometimes go to their office to work.In the case of an architect with a firm working from home I think it would be difficult. An architectural project depends on team interaction that is less successful or impossible remotely. If, for some reason, an architect needs to work from home for a short period, say for a sick child or other reason, it could work short term assuming the firm has a system that allows you to logon to their server and work directly with the shared files.

Why do architects work for long hours?

Several reasons.the passion to create beautiful design overcomes you, so that it is not work, but what you love to do. Solving problems through the art of design stirs your soul. Good architects are passionate about design.there are never enough hours required to create really beautiful design within the deadline imposed and within a typical 8 hour work day. An 8 hour day gets the job done, but doesn't leave the time to truly work the design over and over again to make it sing. You need a 12 hour day to really do it well.competitive fees pay only for the 8 hour day, so if the architect wants to create something beautiful they put in the extra non paid time. See first item above! No one pays them for that extra 4 hours. It's their passion.by nature great design architects are a bit socially awkward due to their god complex and so hanging around in the office designing till midnight is more natural than a normal social life. Many stories of Architects ending up in affairs with their office staff and divorcing their wife for the younger draftsperson intern cause they spent more time in the office than at home.architecture school has a culture of “"all nighters” that ingrains in you that if you really love design you prove it by doing it 24/7.Architects like a lot of artists are natural procrastinators. They need a deadline to work to and need the threat of a looming deadline to really start putting in the productive focus hours. By the time the deadline is looming you need to work the long hours to make up for the procrastination.design is never truly finished. You could always keep revising, rethinking, what if-ing, editing, trying it a new way, etc. If you didn't have a deadline to present the work to someone and be able to invoice for your fees, you would never finish it! No one ever finishes the design a week ahead schedule and puts down the pencil.smart architects run Firms that have lots of these architects working long hours, but they go home at 5!

How much do architects get paid?

What do you like about being an architect?

Architecture is a bit like art interwoven with engineering. A painter doesn't have to worry about the structural soundness of their canvas, and an engineer needn't fret about their work being aesthetically pleasing, but a good architect designs a building that is purposeful, safe, capable of withstanding the elements and time and a sight to behold. The truly remarkable architects designs are enormous, functioning pieces of art that are reflective of the contemporary time period and will serve as history and insight to our lives today in the future. Think of the importance of the White House, Buckinham Palace, St Paul's Cathedral and Sydney's Opera House. On a less grand scale, consider the importance of a well-designed house that will be someone's home, or a nursing home designed in a way to make the lives of the residents easier and more comfortable, or a shopping center that people will flock to and enjoy.

Becoming an architect like Pei is probably akin to wanting to be a director like Spielberg, though. My stepmom's sister is an architect and is frustrated with her career for the same reasons Cookie mentioned. She is more of a worker bee on someone else's design rather than being able to create her own designs. I think if I were to become an architect I'd work with a firm for a while to establish myself, make contacts and learn, and then would start my own firm.

I'm just a senior in high school taking an Art & Architecture class, so I'm not sure if I'm the best one to answer this question, but I thought I'd share my thoughts anyway.

Where can I find an easier Home Architect software that works with Windows 7?

By the way, the Broderbund 3D Home Architect Deluxe 3.0 is just the older version of the Encore 3D Home Architect 7.0. They are made by the same company, but they chose to go with Encore on the label a few years ago instead of Broderbund. You'd think that because it's just an updated version of the software I already had, that it would just be an improved version. But that wasn't the case, they changed EVERYTHING about the software, I can't even import my hundreds of blueprints from the previous software to the newer software. The new one is actually a soft-CAD program, that without the proper training, no average Joe could figure out. That being said, I'm afraid to go with Broderbund or Encore anymore, or any of their many affiliated software companies.
