Do Bat Boys Travel With The Team

Do bat boys travel with the team?

Some do, yes, although they actually carry the official title of "clubhouse attendant." On the field, they are still called "bat boys"... but clubhouse attendants are actually adult employees assigned to the teams equipment manager. In addition to handling "bat boy" chores during games, they are responsible for preparing players' equipment before the game and collecting and cleaning it after.

The younger kids you see at games called "Bat Boys" do not normally travel with the team and are often honorary positions for the children of players, coaches, team sponsors and their friends.

Depending on the team and host field, some teams do have honorary bat boys (and girls) on the road...but they are usually local kids with some ties to the team. For example, when the Dodgers play in Philadelphia, Tommy Lasorda (who is a native of nearby Norristown, PA) will often invite kids of family friends to serve as honorary bat boys.

Do visiting teams bat boys travel with the team?

Actually - some do. During the postseason, the visiting team usually supplies their own, which usually is a child of an older member of the team (usually high school age). In 2005, Ozzie's kid was a batboy for the postseason. During the regular season, the Sox had the same guy (he was 23) as visiting team batboy all season.

Are MLB bat boys paid?

Yes, they are. The MLB requires that all teams pay their bat boys minimum wage. The teams have different methods of payment, though. Some teams, like the Atlanta Braves for example, pay their bat boys at an hourly rate ($9/hour), while the New York Yankees pay an annual salary (between $7,623-$8,276).To become a bat boy for a MLB team, you need to be at least 14 years old and in decent physical shape. The waiting list to become a bat boy for most teams is quite long and you often need to know someone who works for the team or have some sort of "inside connection."(Retrieved from another question on Quora; source: Kidzworld)

How do bat boys do their job yet still go to school?

Some of the ones i see look really young, and i know they follow the team on the road so how about school?
i.e. barry bonds' son is a bat boy for the giants.. okay how bout school then? and oh yeah.. do u get paid for being one?

How do you become an MLB bat boy?

It all depends.  I was a bat boy for the Giants one game when I was 12.  Some of the bat boys were players sons or organization family members.  My girl friend's dad did the catering for the team, so that's how I got hooked up.  Generally, the home team provides bat boys (or girls - yes there have been a few) for the visiting team as well.

What is it like being a batboy on a Major League Baseball team?

About a year earlier, I interviewed the bat boy for the San Diego Padres. You can read the story here … https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/5...Here is a quote from the batboy in that article regarding his schedule:We (meaning us clubbies) often work late into the night or just have to spend the night in the clubhouse. It wouldn't be uncommon for us to finish out a series at midnight and then have to be ready to go again at 7:00 the following morning.I always just try to keep in perspective how lucky I am to have this job and I always get excited when I am driving to the ballpark, so it's not too hard for me to always have my A Game.

Do mlb ballboys get paid?

no.. Ballboys and batboys volunteer . They do not travel with the teams either. The ball boys down the foul lines are usually college students home for summer(they can put this on a resume). The batboys for the home team is usually a relative of one of the players and the away teams bat boy is a local kid(they do not travel with the team).

Tons of people love doing it for free so they're not going to pay you to do it.

Why not eliminate the bat/ball boy positions in MLB and have the non-playing players on each team fulfill that duty?

Batkids and ballkids have been part of baseball for generations. These positions provide an accessible and aspirational entry point for children to the sport they love. Over the course of a season many children can participate as honorary ballkids and/or batkids and cement their emotional connection to baseball.Batkids and ballkids don't cost much. Uniforms, insurance, a few dollars -- it is trivial in comparison to the benefits.Major league players don't wait on each other, and shouldn't have to. They are playing at the most elite level and are focused on their own responsibilities. They have the right to not have to chase fouls and pick up each others' bats.
