Do Fillings For Cavities Hurt

Does it hurt to get a cavity filled?

As the drill carves into the tooth, it generates a lot of heat. Based on my personally experience, it is this heat that causes discomfort/pain. Some dentists spray cold water onto the tooth to cool it down while drilling, or stop drilling every few seconds to allow it to cool down before proceeding. There are many dentists out there who are not particularly attentive to detail or generally just not very intelligent. It just doesn’t occur to them that a piece of metal spinning against a hard surface produces significant amounts of heat. This is elementary physics… Anyway, before you go ahead, ask him to stop drilling every 5 seconds for 5 seconds (so basically 5 on, 5 off). This way you’ll minimise the chances of discomfort. The degree of discomfort also depends on the depth of the cavity being drilled. If you have sensitive teeth, it basically feels like sipping on a hot beverage and then suddenly biting into ice cream. If this ever happens, raise your hand to let your dentist know that you need him to stop. Overall, it’s not a pleasant experience.

How bad do fillings hurt?

I have to go and have a small filling done tomorrow myself, and from everything I've heard, they aren't that bad. Plenty of my friends have gone and had them done, and haven't complained about a lot of pain at all.
As far as possibly getting a tooth pulled, it's not so bad either. I had a local anesthetic (having a needle go into your mouth isn't so bad, my dentist will tug on my cheek a little to distract me from it) and they gave me a little, what most people know as "laughing gas". Once you're numb, you shouldn't feel a thing at all. You'll probably feel some tugging, maybe taste a little blood, and probably hear a little cracking (not to scare you, cuz I promise it's not that bad lol) and then you're done. Take some pain meds when you get home and you'll be fine.

I'm a complete wuss when it comes to dental work, so if I can do it, I'm sure you can too.

Do cavity fillings hurt?

1. Yes! Always!
2. No. All you feel is a little pressure. The numbing gel works like magic!
3. Yes, several. I grind my teeth at night and fracture them, so I have had fillings, crowns and root canals from cracked crowns, even though my teeth are for the most part pretty healthy.
4. Depending on how much you need the numbness will wear off between 3-5 hours.
5. The shot will go in your gumline to block the nerve receptors. It will not hurt at all.
6. Cavities only hurt when they get deep. Your cavity could be really small and only take like 20 minutes.
7. Don't freak out. The dentist is a highly skilled professional. Dentists do this all the time and know exactly what they are doing. And, if you feel like you aren't numb enough, they will add a touch more numbing gel. It's really not as big a deal to get a cavity filled as you might think. When you are done, you'll probably be all, That's it?

Really it will be fine!

Do cavity fillings hurt?

I got my first cavity :/ My mom says they don't hurt because they put a numbing cream on before the shot..? She got her first cavity filled a couple weeks ago, so it might be a recent method.. I don't know if I quite believe her... haha. So just a couple q's!

1) Do they really put numbing cream on before the Novocain shot?
2) Does the Novocain shot hurt? If so, how much?
3) Have you ever had a cavity filling before?
4) How long will my mouth be numb?
5)Where will the shot go?
6) Aren't cavities supposed to hurt? My cavity does not hurt AT ALL..
7) How long will the procedure take? My cavity is very small.
8) How can I calm myself down about this? I'm freaking out and I feel like my mouth is gross! I've always brushed my teeth twice a day and floss every night... I don't even get why I have one! :/

Does getting cavities filled in between teeth hurt?

YOu should be numb during the procedure, so you should not be hurting. Its really no different than any other filling. depending on the size and number of teeth involved it may take half an hour.

The way a tooth is filled that is inbetween (interproximal) is by drilling first on the chewing surface and moving the drill in the direction that the of the cavity (This is done for retention purposes) Once they are over the are where the cavity is they drill downward, until they find the caivity. Once found they drill out all decay tooth structure. Once remove they try to give it a symetrical shape so that they can fill it easily. Once the drilling is done a metal or plastic band is used. The wrap this around the tooth that is going to get filled. This wrap acts as a temporary wall to keep the filling from coming out the side. then they put the filling in and finally adjust it to your bite,.

Why does my mouth hurt after getting a cavity filling?

Your nerve is irritated by the procedure, it’s pretty common. It should subside after couple of days, but sometimes it can take several weeks or even months :-/. But if it gradually gets better (and not worse), just wait it out with the help of OTC painkillers. If it gets worse (which can happen, mainly if the filling is big), you’ll probably in for the root canal, or sometimes just replacing the filling (white composite fillings are very technique sensitive so sometimes error can happen and then it just needs to be changed).

What hurts more? A tattoo or a cavity filling?

I am going to be having a couple cavities filled in two different appointments and I'm very nervous. I was wondering how much the novocaine shot hurts. I was always told this is the worst step and I hate needles. Regardless of this I have sat through 30 minutes of a tattoo. I wanted something to gauge this new experience against. I did not feel much pain with the tattoo, but some doctor given injections cause me pain.

On a scale of 1-10 how bad does a filling hurt?

If a 10 is getting your leg blown off in a roadside bomb, then I would say a 0.5.
