Do I Have A Needle Phobia Or Am I Just Afraid To Get Shots

Who has needle phobia?

i also am terrified of needles. i have been ever since i was little and was in the hospital. this was back in the day when they used to sterilize and re-use needles - the needle broke off in a kids arm in the bed next to me. ever since then - me and needles - NO WAY!!! one time it took 3 orderlies, a doctor and my mother to hold me down while another doctor gave me my shot. another time i kept screaming "i'm going to tell my daddy" (i was about 6 at the time) so the next time i had to go for shots he went with. since becoming an adult, i have never had a flu shot, or any type of vaccination. i still have to have someone go with me to hold my hand, and i tell the dr or nurse that i have to lay down - even to have blood drawn. when i had my youngest son, the nurse was trying to put in an iv - she must have stuck me a dozen times(well it felt like it anyway) finally i told her to get the f away from me and go get somebody that knew what the h they were doing. the next nurse that came in said that i had hurt the other nurse's feelings and i told her i didn't care then showed her where i was already starting to get a HUGE bruise. unfortunately i have a cardiac condition, have had 3 heart attacks, and 7angioplasties so i have had to have a lot of needles in the last 4 years. i am way better than i used to be - but like i said - still have to be laid down for everything. good luck

I am extremely afraid of needles and shots. HELP!!?

Okay, first off unfortunately there is absolutely NO alternative. Getting vaccines and blood drawn are just a part of life. But I had a fear of needles as well, (don't anymore), and this is how I overcame it. This may seem counter-intuitive but watching exactly what they are doing will help quite a bit. If you see whats going down and try to keep an "interested" mindset rather than a "oh **** I'm about to be stabbed in the arm with a needle" mindset you will undoubtably feel less stress and after a couple of times you wont mind at all!! The worst part is the waiting room, the shot really is just a little prick.

I want to join the army, but I have a phobia to needles(*tripanophobia*)?

If you want to join the Army you had better get used to getting shots!

You get so many "Army shots" . . . and you get shots at various times throughout the year...

Even if you lay down, I doubt that it'd be enough to accomodate an actual phobia...
And if you have a phobia, it's a diagnosed psychological disorder that you will need a waiver for...

If you just dont like needles you better get used to things you dont like! Try a tattoo, or donating plasma or blood.

Why are some people afraid of needles?

About 3–5% of people are genetically predisposed to have a fainting/low blood pressure/nausea/weakness response, or “vasovagal”, sometimes just “vagal”. The theory goes that the strong warriors hit by an arrow or sword who then immediately passed out from low blood pressure didn’t get a Black Knight Monty Python spurting thing, and lived to procreate with the wives of the warriors who stayed standing until they bled out. Needle phobia has been increasing about 3-fold over the last 30 years. I research this, and found a statistically significant relationship between the number of preschool injections on the same day and later needle fear. Phobias most commonly start after kids have verbal memory (about age 3) but before they can think abstractly (about age 6–8). When an event is painful or frightening, parents are clearly anxious or upset, and a child has an unexpected outcome, it can be remembered as a traumatic event. We found that when preschool kids got only one shot at a time multiple visits, none were highly afraid of needles 5 years later, but when they got 4 or 5 on the same day, 50% were afraid. Getting multiple injections on the same day didn’t cause problems in infancy or toddlerhood - they didn’t remember.

I am needle phobic and leaving for Air Force BMT in a month, what can I do?

As the title says, I'm needle phobic. I swore in about 6 months ago, and ever since have had this knot in my stomach. Why? Because I'm severely needle phobic. Not just a dislike, I avoid serious dr. visits because of this phobia. The closer my time at BMT comes, the more anxiety I've had. I'm afraid I will literally be sick to my stomach at BMT until I actually get the shots. Is there anything they can do to assist those with severe needle phobia? Can they put me on anti-anxiety medication or something? I do have a little bottle of Rescue Remedy, but somehow I don't think they'll allow me to keep that.

Should needle-phobic people get a tattoo? I would like to get the Olympic rings.

I, myself hate needles. But I have 2 tatoos. The device the artist uses does have needles, but not any that you can actually see. It's slightly painf depending on which area you will have the piece done.More importantly….choose a skilled artist! A good artist charges approx $100 an hour. Do not go cheap on something that is a lifetime commitment!

How can someone with a phobia of needles get a tattoo?

I have a phobia of needles.Yup, that's my leg and Sierra Argyle working her magic on my leg with a rotary tattoo machine. But am I really phobic about needles? You bet. When I started hormone therapy I had to have regular blood tests. I tell the techs that I need to lie down and not look so I don't faint. Last time I tried watching when I got a shot I made it as far as the lobby before I collapsed. I seriously have a problem with needles. But tattoo machines don't look remotely like medical needles. Take a look at the machine in Sierra's hand. Does that look like a needle? If it really bothers you, don't watch. The first time I was in Studio Arcanum I remember seeing this massive tough looking guy having his shin worked on. He had headphones on and an eye mask. Legit, he could have been at spa getting a pedicure, he just needed some cucumbers for his eyes and a green mud mask to complete the look. No artist is going to care if you zone out while they work on you.So, from one needle phobic person to another, don't sweat it. I haven't found that getting tattoos triggers my phobia, and if it does yours, just don't watch. Bring a blindfold and take a nap while they work.

Needle Phobic Son. Worried Mum. PLZ HELP?

Hi,

I have been needle phobic almost all of my life (I'm 35!) but have learned a few different ways to deal with it, particularly when visiting the dentist (he specialises in this kind of stuff)!

First, try and speak to the dr/nurse/ped cons in advance of your sons appointment. Get them to keep the needles and syringes out of sight. The longer the visual build up, the worse the phobic reaction.

Explain to your son that you get why he is scared and that you'll try and help him through it, but it's important the work gets done. Discuss diversionary tactics between the two of you (iPod playing whilst he keeps eye contact with you, rather than waiting on the doctor jabbing in). Or have an agreement that he keeps his eyes closed the entire time.

Repetitive re-inforcement does work, but it feels a little corny. Have him repeat something strong under his breath (Bigger and Better is mine).

Numbing cream does work, but remember, it's not the pain he's reacting to, it's the act of the injection. In my rational time, I know they don't hurt, and that the needle is miniscule. In my phobic time, I'm trying to avoid being stabbed.

Finally, don't try the 'just get over it' or 'you'll grow out of it' route. He'll just feel alone - I did.

What do I do if I'm terrified of needles and I need a Novocain shot tomorrow for a dental procedure?

Lots of people have needle phobia. By the way Novocain hasn’t been used forever as a dental anaesthetic. You ideally should have a conversation with your dentist regarding your needle phobia.Depending on how severe it is several things could be done. For many patients, the use of a topical anaesthetic and a slow injection technique gets them through. For others, I prescribe a sedative hypnotic like Lorazepam or other benzodiazepine the night before. Sometimes the morning of the appointment (of course you need someone to drive you to the clinic because you should not be driving under the influence).Nitrous oxide is another option to relax you prior to the freezing. But all of these things should be figured out in advance of the appointment.I also use a different system to freeze phobic patients which uses a pump to slowly inject the anaesthetic as a way shorter needle is used. It takes the edge off many patients and is virtually painless (The Wand and it is controlled by a microprocessor). I have tried it on myself so I know what I am talking about. You can also use guide imagery and other techniques to rationalize that the injection is not going to cause you massive pain and damage. You may not want to hear this but the fear is irrational. It may be related to a traumatic experience but you have to realize that all future dental injections are not going to be that way. I know the phobia is real to you but it is irrational fear.In rare cases there is IV sedation but I generally reserve that for multiple extractions or wisdom teeth and not fillings.I can empathize with your situation but you’be left it a bit late.
