Do I need Counter Strike installed for Garry's Mod?
Well it is not required but it is recommended because some textures may show as error in the game and not always though. I mean the counter strike textures. When i bought the Gmod from Steam i bought Counter Strike Source+Garry's Mod and it was 12$ for my region (or maybe country because im not sure but it was 24$ for my friend who lives in another region). And also, if you really have Counter Strike Source already then i recommend you to install it too. It is rather better to play without problems than playing with some problems just because you dont want to install the game. So i recommend you to instal CSS too and you will be more happier with that. Sorry for my bad English by the way. And yeah you need Half Life too but i didn't buy half life because i dont like it and i dont have any problems with Counter Strike Source + Gmod+ Counter strike source is a good game too so i bet you will play it too sometimes when you want.
Does Garrys mod cost money to get?
If you have cs:s hl2 deathmatch and regular hl2 then you can get garrys mod 9 for free if you want garrys mod 10, then you can have any game made from valve and buy gmod 10 from steam store FOR $10 do the ATI or NVIDIA steam deal, google it and get normal hl2 (hope u have it) and cs:s that way you can get gmod 9 for free or u can make gmod only run the GCFs for HL2 DM if you do one of the offers, just google it
