Do People In India Travel On Top Of Full Trains

Why are there people above trains in India?

Because going below the train could be highly disastrous.I was joking. We are a large country. We have a large population and many are underprivileged but have travel needs. Railways offers the cheapest travel options especially in the unreserved and/general compartments and even in the standard seat/sleeper berth compartments. You somehow get in the train. Travel. Reach destinations. Things are changing with more trains and improved roads and rail roads. India is vibrant.

Why do people sit on top of trains in India?

India is a populated country, nd a powerful mix of everything else( low income, thngs r costly, sense of camaraderie is strong ..u jump I follow types, not much control by police nd government). U hv to live there nd be a part of it to knw it better. Things like this happen during peak hours or during special days like some Mela or festival( everyone is in a rush nd nt enough trains ). But I guess the government has introduced a law against it ....but who is going to follow it ;)! I myself witnessed it once during one of my visits to Rajasthan in India. Train was going damn slow because of the sand dunes on the track caused by a sandstorm. At times we had to stop because I guess they had to clear the track. Believe it or nt felt like doing it myself ...fr adventure sake :)! It was some 30 yrs ago. And don't worry I'm an Indian...nd I don't think so someone becomes racist by just asking few simple Q. We call it inquisitive.

Are there really trains in India where many people ride on the roof? If not now, were there ever?

As the train system of India continues to improve the necessity and safety of riding on the roof is declining. More trains are electrified, which makes travelling on the roof nearly impossible, and they are travelling faster, which makes it more dangerous. There are also many more trains in operation, as well as more roads, buses and cars thus relieving the travel burden on each individual train. No, it is not something you will see all over India. Yes, it is most definitely something that was at one time a commonplace on slow-moving non-express rural trains.

Why does the railway allow people to travel on the roof?

We'll, let me clear this to you first.Railway does not allow anyone to travel on the roof. You may be fined for that, and if not, you definitely gonna see a RPF cop running towards you with his stick. But there are other scenarios as well. And let me share my own experience. I live in Behta Hazipur (Ghaziabad) just next to the railway station. I only get out to catch the train when its right on the station.this area is in NCR and there are thousands of people who travel to Delhi for their jobs daily. For thousand of poeple there are only a few trains in the peak hours (7am to 10am). And because there is no way they can travel inside the train, I see about hundreds of people traveling daily on the roof of the train.I'm sure they don't want to do that and the railway don't want to let them do that. But this cannot be changed unless there are more trains on this route. You may call it a helplessness that we Indians don't have that much resources.

Why is nobody preventing people in India to climb on top of trains for a ride?

Climbing on top in electrified section is very difficult for common man, In some Non electrified areas may have climbing especially in some Mela or festival seasons not in daily practice. India is over populated country and people give birth a kid felt a king like feelings till they could not give a boy child and finally declared Macho-Man. Exceptions are of single kid too but by enlarge people keep trying the birth.Officially it is offence, Where-ever Railway police available they try to get down these people. Sometimes ignore Kya Kare ( What we do people not understand etc).In electrifying section few youngsters do malpractice on bet do stunts, it happen in lot of countries especially Africans do and people follow them, in India for stunt they feel easy way on train a cheap option.Same problem if Police is available then they take action and if halt given to train wait for police till 1000s passengers gets late.

Why don't people in India sit inside the trains?

The situation is not the same always. Trains run at full capacity during the festivals. On normal days, people do not cling at the Train doors, as depicted by the media. The picture shown above was shot during the Chhath Puja. Chhath puja is a Hindu Festival celebrated in the states of Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh, for 4 days after Diwali. During this people travel to their native places to celebrate the festival with their family. As many people travel during the festival, most trains in these 3 states will run insanely crowded.

Travelling on a train in a week or so..scared?

Nothing scary about travelling on a train. It's a lot safer than going by road.

You say you are travelling from England to Scotland. You have to change in between.

So when you get to your starting station, ask the staff there when and where you have to change. Carry a notebook and write down what they say. Keep an eye on the time while you are travelling, and when the train pulls into a station, listen to the announcements. If you have to change at a station the loudspeaker will say so.

When you get off the train at the intermediate station, look around for station staff or VDU displays above the platform which will tell you where your train is, which platform to go to.

People who travel on trains aren't weirdos, just ordinary people like yourself. They won't stare at you, they will be preoccupied with where their luggage goes, whether they have got the right ticket for their journey, whether their friends have caught the train in time, or whether they can hook up their lap top, or read the newspaper, or where the toilet is, or trying to stop their youngsters from jumping on the seats, or keeping their dog under control, or chatting with their partners/friends over the mobile.

A lot of families travel by train, so it might pay to sit near a family and then introduce yourself, talk to the children, etc. That way you'll feel safer.

Good Luck.

Why North Indians Sit down on train roof during Travelling? Why they never care about safety?

a) North India is over populated than south India. b) Travel in Southern Railways in south Indian states such as Kerala, TN, Karnataka and AP to some extent is refreshing especially when your used to North Indian Trains: they follow Indian Railway rules and decorum. Every one will sit in their own seats and they don't make any demands - if the seat is reserved. You don't have to go in doubts: who has occupied in my seat. c) The worst case even if its not their seat..people argue in North. Such a scene is not common in the Chair car Trains in South India.d) Apart from Population in the Rural North: they take any risks in doing things donee) Road Transport even to the smallest villages in Kerala and TN is most of the Time in Good or at least in agreeable condition. This is not the case in North. There are many villagers depend only on Train as it is the Only Mode of Transport availablef)  Southern Railway Guards and Department in general will not allow anyone to board over the carriage or hang on the window or steps.. That is never tolerated here.  One exception is Electric train in chennai where it is considered as a local transport inside the city for locals. There too no one sits at the Top of the train.or hang on a window...might be over crowded that's all. Most Importantly Southern Railway stations are much cleaner.. and neat. It is also not over crowded as in North.. and people generally follow the rules and they do respect the railway authorities.
