Do You Agree With These Facts And Myths Having To Do With Affirmative Action; If So Why; If Not;

Why are people against affirmative action?

When study after study shows that people today are still being actively discriminated against because of their race?

People with "black" sounding names are 50% less likely to get called back for jobs, apartments, housing- just about everything.

When all other factors are equal, and this includes qualifications and experience, white people are still more likely be chosen for a job before an equally qualified black person.

A lot of people are trying to eliminate affirmative action because they say it is unfair. But no one seems to care very much that all these other things that give white people advantages are still going on. They just say, "Well, there's not much you can do. There will always be racism in the world," and then bring up that song from Avenue Q.

Why do people get so riled up about things that are typically portrayed as helping black people (AA actually benefits more white women than any one else.) but seem to accept or outright deny the existence of anything that helps white people...Even though there are countless studies and statistics that show that even with affirmative action, equal qualifications, and equal manners of speech and dress, black people are still more likely to get the short end of the stick?

Affirmative action is not perfect, but it is helping blacks, women, and other minorities to get ahead. People seem totally willing to get rid of it, but very few people seem totally or even remotely willing to come up with a solution that helps resolve the disparities that these groups face. Other than "Ignore race issues and pretend discrimination doesn't exist," not to many solutions have been floating around out there. Why can't we keep affirmative action around until some one comes up with a plan B?

What do you think of Affirmative Action?

I believe that everyone is equal to everyone else until proven otherwise...if a person can complete training then they deserve the job...base things on thier abilities not thier race, sex, or anything else...affirmative action (if it is a long lasint policy not temporary) can have reverse and negative effects....they allow the mindset that the people they are helping are too weak to sustain themselve and allow them to rely on government help...i believe it was implemented to give those who have been given the disadvantage based on tradition a foot hold in the business and political world....but i promise that i would shame ot no end to be accepted to a university over someone else (who was better qualified) just because i was borna women and he a white man....this is just discriminating against another group....what do you think?
