Do You Think Australians Are Ignorant About Our Scientists

Why aren't most Australians fond of science?

Do you know what gives you cancer? Avocados do. Avocados give you cancer. You know how I know? Science told me.But you know what prevents cancer? Avocados. Science told me that too.You know what makes you fat? Eggs. (science told me) but they also make you thin (science told me) and make you live long while also shortening your life span (science again).Australians aren’t fond of science because science can’t make up its damn mind and just tell us what makes us fat and cures cancer.Except the problem isn’t actually science. It’s the media’s oversimplification of science for a sensationalist headline. “Science” didn’t say avocados give you cancer. A group of researchers from one branch of a scientific field discovered that an enzyme in avocados increases a certain cancer risk if consumed in massive doses. For them it was a further step towards understanding cancer, for the media it was an alarmist headline to be used as clickbait. A different group of researchers discovered that another enzyme in avocados reduced the occurrence of cancer in test rats when synthesised and administered in large doses. Their research doesn’t contradict the first research at all, but the subsequent clickbait headline does. And people get annoyed because “science” can’t make up its mind.I don’t have a lot of practical examples to hand but some people in the UK do for a UK media outlet which behaves the same way.Kill or cure? lists all the things that Daily Mail claims cures cancer, and all the things that it claims cures cancer. And the things that do both. For example:Asprin link to cancer riskTaking aspirin in your 40s 'cuts cancer risk'There are countless other examples.Science is complicated. The media over simplifies. The two don’t play well together.I agree that science education in Australia is important, but I believe a lot of people in the country would have a better understanding of the field, and the world as a whole, if we had more media studies education. If all our students learned how the media works at a young age, then science itself would be better off.

What do people think of the anti-vaxx Australian doctor John Piesse?

I would like to see the *&(^”£ in prison. This won’t happen but it is what I think he deserves.Little babies die a horrible death from things like whooping cough because herd immunity is compromised by ignorance and baseless fear.Ask anyone who was alive when kids were in Iron Lungs because of polio what they thought of vaccines when they were developed. It was almost hero-worship for the researchers. For a DOCTOR to be allowing people to put their kids and other people’s babies at risk by not vaccinating is totally unacceptable.PSDon’t try the usual ‘autism’, ‘mercury’, ‘scary virus being injected’ stuff, because I am a mother who got my kids every vaccine available, and a woman who has flu injections every year, Hepatitis B vaccine because I work in community care, and made sure my adult daughter who went to work in the Middle East had every vaccination she needed before she went.My Mum got my vaccinations asap because she was of the age that her cohort died from now-preventable disease.I regard non-vaccination of children who can be vaccinated as a form of child abuse.I go with the science, not internet rumours by people with no scientific training.I make no apology for my views, due to babies like these.

Why is Australia so irrelevant to everything?

Why is intelligence so irrelevant to Americans?Honestly, you have no idea about your own country much less any other.Don't you realise that the world owes Australian inventors, scientists and doctors alone a lot? Thats just a small example. You should think & check before posting such ignorant questions in future.

If 97 percent of the scientist said that there was no gravity, would we all fly off into space?

CR, if you think you are going to prove CAGW by a few cases that don't amount to a hill of beans, you are out of your gourd.

First of all if Australia is drying up then the rest of the world would have to be drying up at the same rate in order for it to be global. That is just scratching the surface. In the 30s we here in the US had the 'Dust Bowl'. We had droughts that were very severe. We haven't had such droughts since then. So if your theory was true, our droughts would be getting worse.

What are the main characteristics of the Australian shrimp?

There is no such thing. It was the creation of an advertising agency who knew Americans were ignorant of science, plus others cultures and idiom, and wanted them to think Australians language was the same as there’s.What Americans incorrectly call shrimps are actually prawns, and that’s what we Australians call them. See…What's the difference between a prawn and a shrimp?
