Do You Think Cash Will Ever Be Obsolete

Will Cash Ever Become Obsolete?

This is an excellent question!

I have to state two arguments. One side says that paper and coins will become obsolete due to a number of factors, such as lack of convenience, lack of minting materials, or just the natural progression of technology warranting the use of it for monetary purposes with credit cards leading the way.

However, I find it difficult to fathom a time when our (or any) government would rely on something that does not physically exist to base our currency on. Digital data can be manipulated and replicated. Anyone with skills and saavy could become millionaires. But of course, this scenario would depend on how cash would become obsolete.

My stance is that minted money will continue to exist. Many countries still back their currency on the gold standard as a way to defend their own currency and offset the American dollar, and if anything happens, the United States will follow suit.

Will paper money (cash) ever become obsolete?

I heard that Sweden went completely cash-less - meaning, they pay for everything by credit / debit card, PayPal, Apple Pay, etc.

I dont understand how money become obsolete. You go to festivals (which is of course once a year) and they arent equipped for that kind of payment since its only once a year. So, thats why you use cash.

Another example is going to the dollar store - if I go for one item, the bank will think my credit / debit card was compromised because someone charged $1 to it (or it wont go through because it scanned at a dollar store for one item) and then you will have to take out cash because the card wouldnt work.

A third example is hurricane. If you lived through Sandy or Katrina, you know nowhere would take the cards or other forms of payment (like Apple Pay, PayPal, etc) because their systems were down. Which means you need to pay by cash until they say they could get their systems to work again (which they wouldnt know until storm is over and they have to see when it'll work afterwards).

Will 720p display ever become obsolete?

Improvements to 480i TV took, what, 50 years?

Clearly part of that was due to the slow pace of technological innovations early in that period compared to the recently. However do not underestimate the inertia of over coming what people have.

Just because some segment of technology has progressed to the point where a 2160p TV is possible, doesn't mean all of the technology is in place. For example, consider the bandwidth required for such a signal, which is already a problem for just the current signals.

>Will 720p display ever become obsolete<

It will be replaced at sometime in the future, but I certainly do not believe it will be in or by 2015.

>due to the fact that the human eye cannot really see any more detail<

If you are talking a pretty small TV, this may be true, but I can certainly see a difference between my 720p TV and my 1080p model and with screen sizes getting larger, the differences will be even more visible.

No doubt at some time it will eventually become obsolete.
It is not yet though and not likely to be for a few years yet.

Will graphic design ever become obsolete?

Graphic design is important for company logos and things like that. As long as there is human life and energy, I highly doubt it will ever die out. Improve? Sure. All technology tends to do so over time. But die out? I don't think so.

Will paper money ever become obsolete?

eventually.
it is costly to deal with, not traceable, and costs money to produce. there is a cheap, easy, and highly accurate solution in having an electronic currency system.
it will be instituted slowly, but steadily. each generation will be more inclined, goaded, and rewarded by the use of electronic banking, online billing, and e shopping. cash will be portrayed as slow, cumbersome, and unreliable. each generation will be pushed closer until one government somewhere, most likely a small nation in europe, will declare it will no longer print paper money. that decision will be applauded by banks and corporations. it will be the new cool. it will be the new sign of being a 21st century nation. other nations will follow suit. the noose will be tied.
