Is "Anya" an ugly name?

Preamble:I AM NOT SAYING THIS JUST TO IMPRESS User.Ahem.Um, nah. It’s not objectively ugly. What name is? It’s just a bunch of phonemes. Is Melanie ugly, because it sounds like melanoma? Is Mycroft ugly, because it sounds like Microsoft?Any ugliness we associate with names is cultural. And what’s an Anya ever done to you?I could put in an anecdote about an Anya my wife studied with; but Quora is googleable, so I’ll pass. What Anya is though, is unfamiliar in an English-language environment. If an English-speaking shmuck in high school hears an unfamiliar name, of course they’re going to scramble to find things about it to make fun of. Because they’re shmucks. Now, pronouncing it as “Awnya” instead of “Ahnya”: that, I might take issue with…

What name from the past do you think should make a comeback, or what name (current or past) should be put to rest forever?

I make my suggestion based on one of the best historic names ever, what a brilliant name was cooked up by the parents ofISAMBARD KINGDOM BRUNELHe of Structural Engineering fame!Isambard is a great name, I don't think it was ever that common, but it's old-fashioned and we should have a revival! And if you were to be called Isambard and found it too long or fancy for everyday use - well, it's easy enough to shorten it to Sam.Name I would lose for ever - sorry to anyone called this, but Martha. It always seems to be a servant’s name in literature, and I don't suppose The Handmaid’s Tale helps with that image. And being reminded of The Handmaid’s Tale every time you hear the name gives it a somewhat depressing air of repression. Blame Margaret Atwood for ruining that name! I know a guy at work who recently named his daughter Martha - each to their own, but I bet he's never read that book! Finally, no kid should ever have the indignity ever again of being called Fanny. It was a popular name in my Grandma’s day, but Fanny in England means vagina/external lady bits, and in the USA means arse. One of the worst names I've ever heard is Fanny Cradock. Fanny (vagina) followed by a word halfway between Crack and Haddock, that being the last surname you'd want to put with Fanny. Just - pity the poor kid. An elderly person might still get away with being called Fanny, but please, don't inflict it on a child. That would just be mean.

What do you think of an ugly girl who dresses well?

Note: I am not criticizing the looks of either actress in my examples, they are both beautiful women. What I am pointing out is how flattering or unflattering clothing choices can reflect on a person and affect how they are received by others.Everyone looks better when they dress “well”. Good dress sense and care for one’s appearance present a person in the best light. These things also reflect well on one’s judgement, showing that they care, that they understand what is appropriate, and that they have a sense of self respect. This is at least as important as being particularly “beautiful” in terms of how one interacts with others. Conversely, a very beautiful person who does not exercise good judgement in how they dress may put people off because they seem bizarre, or to lack self respect or good judgement. (See: Britney Spears circa 2007 breakdown.)examples:Lovely, intelligent, quirky actress Mayim Bialik was on the closet makeover show What Not To Wear a couple years back. Her acceptable if a bit ho-hum look was upgraded to a more flattering and chic look. Comparing some of her “before” looks as well as those of her fashion challenged character on the Big Bang Theory to her more recent public appearances shows the good a little smart dressing can do.Before:After:Love her or hate her, polarizing actress Lena Dunham is known for her character Hannah on Girls, who also makes questionable choices in how she dresses - let’s say “unflattering”. Although she doesn’t always hit the mark (sorry, but its true) Lena has demonstrated in real life that smart dress sense can be quite transformative. Before:After:

What do you think of this rare name from colonial America?

1. I'd pronounce it eye-ZAN-nuh. Upon first glance, I might be tempted to pronounce it Iz(as in Isabella)-anna, but I've seen the name before.

2. Yes and no. In theory I do, but in reality it's not particularly appealing to me, for a few reasons.

The spelling: This is entirely a matter of opinion, but I generally prefer names without an -h on the end. For example, I love the name Susanna, but only without the -h. I would rather not use Susanna at all than spell it Susannah. Even though Isannah is different in that Isanna isn't a valid variant, the -h still detracts from its appeal. But this is an idiosyncrasy of mine and I suppose it wouldn't really matter to anyone else. Also, the spelling doesn't strike me as particularly aesthetic. Usually, this wouldn't bother me, as I'm a fan of "ugly" names like Ingrid and Bridget, but in this case, it does.

Secondly, while it's certainly an intriguing choice, it unfortunately sounds like (and is spelled like) a combination of Isabella and Hannah, two current top-ten names. I think the immediate assumption would be that the name is a made-up "unique" choice. That was actually my reaction when I first saw the name. It was only after I did some research that I discovered that it was actually legitimate. However, most people won't go home and look the name up, so that misconception may be fairly common.

Also, in my opinion, it doesn't age well. I can't picture it on a teenager, a young woman, or a middle-aged woman. For some reason, I see it on a little girl and an elderly lady, but I can't see in between.

The bottom line is that I don't really care for it. Not to say it's a bad name, because it isn't. It's actually just the kind of name I like; it has everything going for it. It's just one of those that I'd like to like but don't.

3. Isannah Katherine, Isannah Rosalind, Isannah Charlotte, Isannah Helen/e, Isannah Margaret, Isannah Alice, Isannah Blythe, and Isannah Maude sound pretty to me. I particularly like Isannah Blythe.

4. For sisters, I can see Isannah fitting right in with Abigail, Rosalind, and Celia/Cecilia. With boys, I can see Frederic/k, Warren, and Henry.

A similar one I just found is Isanne; it must be a variant. I will confess that I like Isanne a bit more than Isannah. They're both very interesting, though!

I hate my name!?

Well, whatever your name is, it can't be as bad as Jason Lee's son Pilot Inspektor, right? Or Suri of the Cruises which actually means pickpocket in Japanese (besides those sweet and fancy-schmancy meaning in Hebrew and Persian). And what about Moxie Crimefighter?
