Do You Think My Puppy Is Done Growing

Why has my pitbull puppy stopped growing?

Because people breed "popular" dogs like roaches nowadays... most of them never meet the criteria displayed based on the 'breeds' typical growth. Many people take home 'chihuahuas' who think they have seen the parents of their puppy, and their puppy grows to 25 pounds instead of 5 pounds. There's a lot of scams and poor breeding out there sometimes, so always be careful who you buy from and the reason you're buying from them.

But aside from that.. dogs can seem to stay in one place between 5 and 7 months sometimes depending on the breed. If his paws are still relatively large compared to the rest of his body, he is probably going to continue growing. If he does not then the above paragraph might apply to your situation. Pedigree should be just fine. A lot of people might respond with some expensive organic stuff, which I am all for, but nothing about pedigree will stunt your dog's growth at all or do anything harmful. He should be just fine on it.

At what age does my Basenji puppy stop growing & what is the average height of an adult?

I've got 2 Basenjis. My male I raised from a pup, and he was at his full height around 10-11 months of age. He did some "filling out" in the next year....but he didn't get any taller.

Mentally, lol....he didn't get his brain delivered until he was about 3 years old, and even then, it was a defective one ;)....he's still a goofball and he's almost 8! LOL, truth be told, the dog is smarter than I am. He stands about 16-17 inches at the shoulder and weighs 24 lbs. He is from a show breeder and from what I was told by several Basenji folks, he would likely have done pretty well in the show ring (I had him neutered, he's a pet); so he definitely meets the breed standard.

My female is a BRAT rescue from a puppymill and she's tiny for a Basenji- about 13 inches at the shoulder and a mere 15 lbs- she will be 3 in November. She's definitely not to standard and we wonder if she had some growth deficiencies due to being raised in a puppymill and having a litter at 8 months- she still looks like a 6 month old pup, to me! But she's adorable and has the best little personality- an endless source of amusement for us!

BTW- the above person's estimate of 10-12 years is pretty low; it's not uncommon to see Basenjis live to 14 and 15, I have even heard of some reaching 16 and 17. Fanconi (rare kidney disease, common in the breed) can claim lives early if it's not detected & treated in time....but with early detection the dog can live a full life. There is a blood test for Fanconi now- it's a good idea to get the test done, just to see what the future holds for your pup! If you don't get the test done, make sure you strip test montly when your pup reaches 1-2 yrs old. Google "fanconi disease basenji" and "gonto protocol" for more info, if you don't already know about it :)

Is my 1 year old wolf hybrid done growing?

My husky didn't really stop growing til about three. Your hybrid has probably done most of its growing, it will probably grow a few inches and pounds, but the crazy growth spurts should be finished. Personality wise, your dog will be as goofy as a puppy for at least a couple more years.

As far as the hybrid part goes, i think they are vanity pets. They aren't helping the wolf species and they are prone to having wolfish outbursts that can harm you or someone you know. Millions of bred-for-people dogs die in shelters every year, yet people go out of their way to breed wolfish dogs just so they can brag to their friends and show them off.

You probably love your dog and don't see any harm in it. It may never hurt anybody, but it's still an ugly breeding practice.

I'm 14 and thinking of getting a puppy. What breed should I look for?

Puppies are cute but only for few days after that they grow very fast. Before you realize it will be full grown dog and loose all puppy feel. If you just want to play with puppies then volunteer in shelter or make friends with somebody who works as Foster family for puppies and dogs. That way you can get the feel and observe closely. Your life will change a lot in next few years. You might go somewhere else to study or get job. Who will take care of your dog? Are you ready to leave that dog behind? I think it will be very hard. I can not think of one day without him. I will say get a dog/puppy when you are stable by that I mean, you are done with  your study/college/schoool have secured job and have your place (rented or owned does not matter). Still if you want to get a dog adopt one from shelter or rescue.

Do you think my Bloodhound/Boxer mix will grow much more?

I don't know what to expect because I have never owned a large dog before. I want to buy her a good hiking pack in the next month or so, but I don't want it to be too small a year from now!

She is about a year old this month (not sure of exact birth date). She weighs 63-lbs currently and has not grown in 2 months. My husbands former co-worker coerced him into taking the pup home last April. She was 16-lbs last April- extremely skinny and covered in fleas and a bad case of hookworms. The lady said the mom bloodhound is 120-lbs and the dad boxer is 80-lbs. I'm not sure if these dogs are just big, but they could be overweight too. Who knows.

Thanks for answering. I'm just curious what others think.

What stops my havanese dog from growing?

Well, the only reason a dog wouldn’t be growing is a lack of proper nutrition (food, water,) or a bone disorder. If we rule that out, we have to remember that havanese as a breed are very little dogs. The biggest one will get is a little under a foot at the shoulder. So it could be that your pup is done growing, and that’s just his max size. There are also increasing popularity in “teacup” breeds, which are even smaller. You may have gotten a teacup havanese without knowing it. Also, all dogs are different. You may just have a little guy. Dogs typically stop growing at a year or a year and a half, but smaller dogs can plateau younger than that. If you really feel he’s too small, and he is younger than a year and will not grow, you might want to tell your vet and get him checked for some sort of disorder. I hope that’s not the case, though!

At what age does a golden retriever puppy stop growing?

Most dogs of that large but not giant size have achieved full skeletal height and length by 12 months, but growth plates will not close for another 6–12 months and the animal (particularly if intact) will continue to develop over that time. Males will become broader and more muscular, female characteristics are more subtle in most breeds.

At what age does a dog stop being a puppy?

I will be addressing the question from a purely physical perspective. I'm not going to address the question of “puppy at heart" because that depends on the individual dog or sometimes the breed. I've noted that Boxers are young at heart even when they are old and grey.As for physical age, there used to be the old standard that a dog ages 7 years for every 1 real year but that's been found to be a very inaccurate way to measure man's best friends life span. So some folks probably did a study (SMH) to discover that different sized breeds age at different rates according to the size of the dog.As you will note in the chart I found on Pet's Web MD, the first 5 years the physical aging of all sizes is pretty much the same. Also, you can see that at 2 years the chart indicates all does would be what humans would consider “the age of consent" or an adult.I can tell you from a responsible breeders point of view, that you don't breed your female until her third full heat. Most females first heat happen between 9 months to a year. Her heats will come every 6 months after that, making her ready to mate and have her first litter at 2 years. Some breeders will breed at 1 1/2 years, but IMO that is too soon. When studding a male it's best to follow the same formula.I've noted that most puppies reach their full height at 6–7 months and then continue to fill out in bulk and muscle. The final authority of if your dog is still a pup or an adult will be your vet. There are certain medications that a puppy's system can't process until a certain age - medication that would be toxic and deadly if the dog's body is too young to handle it.Again chart and article compliments of Pet Web MDHow to Calculate Your Dog's Age

My Puppy has hiccups?

They are totally normal. The fist time my dog did them i could not tell what was going on and he got them 3 times a day and i got scared.
Hiccups mean that your dog is growing. Babies and kids do it while they go through growth spurts or while growing.

You do not see adults having hiccups for 3-4 min straight, they might have one once in a while. That is because they are done growing.

Hope this helps
