Does Anybody Know Any Really Good Elementary Schools Whose Main Focus Is Science Anywhere In

Can I get into Manhattan/Hunter science high school?

Try applying anyway. If rejection happens, the world needs more comedians.

What can you tell me about the bronx high school of science and if is difficult?

I am a senior at Bronx Science; graduating in June 2010 YAYAYAY!!!

Anyway, let me start by telling you that Bronx Science is one of the best high-schools in NYC, a gold-medal high school in the nation, and well-renowned nationally. We have affiliations with the best private universities - IVYs or otherwise. It offers a plethora of Honors, APs and Post-AP courses. Any advantage a cut-throat expensive private school can provide, it does for free. Basically it is the best high school you can ever pick (yeah, I'm biased!).
The teachers are like our parents - they respect us (most high-school teachers don't), they guide us, offer help with academics and personal matters, and are there to help us always. And they know their stuff; being a teacher here is also a privelege. My very favorite teacher is Dr. Wheeler who taught me AP Bio last year and is my Post-AP Genetics teacher this year.
The guidance counselors are AWESOME - my counselor is my best friend. I've had him since sophomore year and he knows me in and out. They are always available for everything, and always friendly.
The students are competitive but friendly, hard-working and intelligent, and also fun to be around. We are also not bound to strict NYC public school rules. We can take our lunch to the campus outside. We can bring in our cell phones and iPods without having to go through metal detectors. And as long as we are fulfilling the graduation requirements, we are allowed to make our own schedules. Its awesome!!!

The SHSAT was neither difficult nor easy. It was competitive. The above poster is correct. You have a 3% chance to be admitted as a freshman, and 1.5% chance to enter as a sophomore. I enetred as a sophomore so I took the even more competitive version of the test. Barron, Princeton Review, Kaplan are all helpful sources. My advice: PRACTICE!!!! Get a few review books and take all the practice tests. Try to attain a raw score of 85+ if you want to get in. The first time I took a Kaplan diagnostic, my score was 70. Three months later, my score was 94. If I can do it, you can too!

Good public high schools in Manhattan, NY?

Don't pay any attention to the the other people who answered this question so far! The person who suggested Hunter High School, for example, doesn't know what he or she is talking about! You can't get into Hunter after 7th grade!

There are a lot of great schools in NYC, many of them in Manhattan.

I'd suggest that you go to the following site to find information about NYC public schools:

http://insideschools.org/index12.php

This website is run by a non-profit entirely for the purpose of helping students and parents navigate the NYC public school system.

Check out this page on insideschools:

http://insideschools.org/index12.php?s=1...

That page has specific information about how to apply to high school in NYC. It will give you a good starting place. After you have a chance to read through that page, check out their high school reviews. They visit every public school in NYC, and their reviews go way beyond test scores!

Good luck! The NYC public high school admissions process can be daunting. I just went through it with my daughter and it's a lot of work! Don't just limit yourself to a few schools, though. You'll have a better chance of getting in if you broaden your search. And don't just think about Manhattan. Kids in NYC often travel to schools in other boroughs. We live in Brooklyn, but my daughter is going to travel an hour each day next year to Manhattan, because she got into a great school (Laguardia Arts.)

Does your 11th class marks count anywhere?

The marks that you score may not get counted in anywhere, but the syllabus covered in class 11 is of supreme importance and one must never ignore it.Here in India, only the marks of class 12 matters and class 10 marks matter only for getting admission in class 11/12.But most of the competitive exams like JEE mains, JEE advanced, BITSAT and others do have a large portion of the syllabus based on the class 11.Also several chapters in class 11 are linked with chapters of class 12.For example, you cannot get through the probability chapter in mathematics (class 12) until and unless you have a great knowledge and grip over the chapters like permutation-combination and binomial theorem of class 11.Several basic concepts and name reactions of organic chemistry if not covered in class 11 itself may pose problem when understanding higher level organic chemistry in class 12.Therefore:But if someone is really messed up in class 11 (yes, it really happens to many, especially the people from CBSE boards) do not worry. You have to just give a bit more effort to make up the portions that you had to skip in class 11. Just have confidence in yourself and never lose it. You can ace class 12, guaranteed. An important note: If you are planning to study abroad (for your BE/BTech only) like in US, then class 11 marks are of prime importance and a bad score can affect your impression as they ask for official high school transcript i.e. your report cards from class 9 to class 12. But again, do not worry! They would look at your application holistically so you can make up in other areas.Hope it helps. If you like my answer, please do press the upvote button!!! ;-)

What is the main purpose of science?

First off there are (at least) two ways to think about 'purpose'. Science has many uses in society and any of these can be the 'purpose' of science in any particular instance. For example, one use of science is to improve medicine; this is the purpose of the science supported by the Wellcome Trust. What we are really asking here is 'what is science for?' or 'why is science useful?' but there are problems with thinking about 'purpose' this way. For one thing, the same science can have different purposes depending on who you ask what its purpose is.There's a deeper but more prosaic way to think of purpose though. If we ask, 'what is the purpose of screwdrivers?' there are many answers we could give along the lines of 'they enable a system of mass production based on standardised components' or 'they make machines accessible to people'. However, we could also say the purpose of screwdrivers is 'to magnify torque (turning force) and transmit torque to a small component'. This, by itself, doesn't tell us why screwdrivers are useful, but the of advantage defining the purpose of screwdrivers this way is that it tells us something essential about screwdrivers (and also helps us distinguish screwdrivers from non-screwdrivers).On this prosaic, essential level, the purpose of science is: to validate knowledge in such a way that people with different interests can agree that it is valid. It doesn't sound like much, but it is the most beautiful thing humans have ever done together. It's what makes all the rest possible (making life easier, bringing equality to all, etc.)

9th grade placement test!!!! PLEASE HELP?

There's a sample 9th grade placement test at http://www.4tests.com/exams/questions.as... .

Also for Maths and English at http://www.testprepreview.com/hspt_pract... . Scroll down to the bottom of the page for links to sample tests.

There are heaps of links to free online tests covering all the 8th grade stuff (to see if you're ready for 9th grade) at http://www.internet4classrooms.com/grade...

You could try the test papers at http://www.stedwards.oxon.sch.uk/exh-past-papers.html . Scroll down almost to the bottom of the page to the ones marked '14+ Entry'. They have tests there for you to choose from in Maths, English, Science, French, German, Spanish and Latin.

Or take a look at BBC Bitesize for tests in Maths, English and Science, http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks3bitesize . You should be able to manage everything there by the age of 14. Similarly you could try testing yourself against the material at http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/websites/11_16/

Alternatively you could take a look at the grade requirements at somewhere like http://www.worldbook.com/typical-course-of-study-grade-8-curriculum-guide.html and ask yourself if you can honestly say you're up to speed with them. Or download a copy of your home state's own curriculum and educational outcomes and see how you measure up compared to them.

Horsey science fair projects?

Okay, so my school's annual science fair is coming up. It will be due sometime in December, and hasn't been officially announced yet, but will be soon. Anyway, this year I am excited because instead of choosing from a list of 5 or 6 topics, we get to choose our own approved topic! So, of course I am going to do mine about horses (to help me get excited and not procrastinate). I am in 9th grade honors, so I want something not elementry school-ish but not too too hard. I do have my own horse (1) living at my home, so I have access to him 24/7. But, I don't want to change his diet or anything. My neighbors also have to older horses that I could use- with permission of course.
So, do you have any ideas?!
Thank you! :)
