Why is the violin associated with the devil?

The violinist in question was Niccolo Paganini (1782-1840). His technical prowess was unsurpassed in his day, and at any time before him. Another story I recall reading about him was where, in the middle of a performance, all of the strings on his violin broke one after the other, until he was left with only the G string, the lowest one. Any other player would have interrupted the performance long enough to restring the instrument. Paganini kept right on playing on the single string left to him, and brought the piece to a successful conclusion.Paganini's skill was so extraordinary that the rumour began to spread that he was the devil's child or had sold his soul in return for his gift. This was enhanced by his overall appearance, which was sort of diabolical, and the fact that he was something of a showman who seemed to relish his dark aura. But he was also an outstanding musician whose compositions for the violin are important contributions to the repertoire, and are still performed today by the very proficient. As for the more general link between the devil and the violin, that's more in the realm of fiddling, not classical music. Here's a pretty good summary: Classical Ghastlies. This excerpt explains the gist of it:The modern violin emerged in the 16th century, and was often used as an accompaniment to dancing. Peasant performers in dances were denounced in the afterglow of the Protestant Reformation and Catholic counter-Reformation. Many writers blamed the devil for the very existence of dance. The devil, as agent of death and creator of dance, bcame linked to the violin during the Renaissance period, as depicted by paintings such as Pieter Brueghel's "The Triumph of Death" and Hendrik Goltzius's "Couple Playing, with Death Behind."
