Are Jane Austen's novels considered "high literature"?

Many readers, including me, venerate Austen. She tells excellent stories that have perfect structure, characterization and pacing. She mixes wry wit with serious topics. Austen’s books reveal fundamentally human behaviors and emotions.Nevertheless, I do not consider Austen’s books “high literature.” Here’s why:Austen’s books do not make references to earlier literature. Her characters do not philosophize. Her stories do not raise “great questions.”Certainly Austen’s works endure for many good reasons. In particular, they are unique in illustrating women’s lives and viewpoints in the 19th century.Nevertheless, Austen’s novels are not high art.

Are Ayn Rand's novels considered to have "literary merit" for the AP Literature Exam?

I just took a look at a list of sources for a 2010 question and saw Huxley's "Brave New World" on it. I looked at a 2009 question and saw Beckett's "Waiting for Godot" on it. While Rand's works face some bias in the academic community, I'd say even most academicians would credit The Fountainhead with a level of literary merit comparable to these. Perhaps it's not Shakespeare, but it is certainly regular reading for high school students nationwide.

Of course, I am not on the board that administers the AP exams, but I suspect your question could be resolved with an internet search and a couple of phone calls. That said, I think you're safe.

FWIW, I took the 1991 verstion of the test you're taking. I had not read Rand at that point, so I did not rely on her for my essay.

Are graphic novels (comic books) considered literature?

Yes, they are literature. But not true literature. Comic books and graphic novels skip over descriptions since it's drawn out. The only thing written is dialogue and inner thoughts.

You're teacher is asking for a research paper about true American Literature. Meaning you need to assess all the words. How the dialogue and the description of backgrounds works with each other. If you were to talk about about the drawn backgrounds (visual art), then that's no longer literature (written art).

What is the difference between literature and novel?

Literature is a wider term. It refers to any kind of writing that is done for the pupose of entertainment and with a certain amount of care taken regarding the language used. There are lots of forms of literature: novels, plays, poetry, etc. Literature has been around pretty much forever. All cultures have some form of literature - even non-literate cultures have a spoken/sung literature. Producing and appreciating literature is a basic part of being human.A novel is a form of literature. A very basic definition of novel is that it's fictional story (i.e. not based on facts) told in prose (as opposed to poetry). The novel as a form of literature is fairly new - it developed in Western literature only in the 17th century (though there are many similar forms of literature that were common before then, and some are now considered novels). In English literature, the novel did not become common until the 18th century. Not all literary traditions include novels. Currently, novels are the most popular form of literature around the world, but that may change in the future. Indeed, it already has, if you consider film and TV as part of literature as well.

Is Twilight considered American or World Literature?

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't really be considered literature at all. It's just a really popular fictional novel. That doesn't make it literature.
