Does Perception Shape Our Understanding

How does language shape our perception of reality?

I think it shapes how we judge things and also what we see in other people and what we project onto other people.
We all naturally connect with things we understand and that includes people who speak a language we understand.

To what extent does perception shape our reality?

If the question implies reference to philosophical traditions, then they could be represented by: 1) Descartes, a father of continental rationalism, who especially stressed 'innate ideas' (internal perception) and 2) the empiricist school of thought consisting of Hobbes, Locke, Berkeley, and Hume, who stressed the key role of experience and feelings (opposed to innate ideas of Descartes) (external perception). It's very rough, but in general in terms of philosophy.

How does media affect people and shape their perception of reality?

I think that the media most strongly affects young people, especial social media, and those with very little education, especially those who are isolated from centers of learning or from those who might personally interact with them on different issues. If someone only watches a certain right-wing, bombastic, xenophobic and often racist and sexist news channel, then they begin to believe everything that it reports, even if the news is untrue. Worse yet, they are often whipped into a frenzy over certain issues, such as immigration, women’s rights, weird candidates for political office and so on. They fail to go out and educate themselves, like those who are well-educated tend to do. Rather, they swallow whatever these TV channels and online blogs or tweets spew out, often false and incendiary. Then they end up voting for someone who claims to support their best interests and promises to make things “great” again for them, who then ignores them and threatens to take away their basic necessities such as better wages, healthcare and jobs. They don’t see, through the haze of their belief in all the propaganda, that this guy only supports the interests of the rich—people like him. Also, the media gives the wrong message to young people, such as a frenzy over materialism, saying that they must have the right car, the right clothes, latest gadgets and so on. They spend all their money on those instead of saving for the future. And worse, the media slavishly caters to those who make money off of products that promote the idea of women as sex objects, with things like skin-tight clothing, tons of make-up, messages that focus only on a girl’s body and not her mind, telling them that looking like a Kardashian is the ultimate goal, not getting a good education and a career. It also tells guys that they should only date girls who look like this, rather than creating meaningful relationships.About the only good thing that the media has done (via promoting movies and stars) is make the acceptance of Gays and transgender people more common, inadvertently promoting tolerance.

How can we stop having expectations that shape our perception?

We can't. It's part of being human. The best we can do is to be aware that all humans have the same issues, and do our best to design experiments that compensate for our biases. In medicine, that's why we have randomized double-blind controlled trials. Those who observe the experimental subjects don't know what treatment they are getting, so the biases apply equally to both groups. And the assignment of subjects to groups is done randomly, so that the experimenter cannot unconsciously, for example, assign the sicker subjects to the control group. In aviation, there's a proverb that all pilots learn: "When your instruments disagree with your senses, trust your instruments." That's another example of avoiding confirmation bias.

Does one's perception of reality affect reality?

Reality is best found in the one observing. The level one is able to understand what they perceive is in direct correlation to the reality they live. The one absence that shuffled amongst humanity is where it is in time you choose to ponder reality. Everyone’s lesson of experience is different, so the place of ones truth will allow them to invest only the information they are ready for. A passenger view differs from a drivers view. When you are the driver of your own reality the destination of where you go is up to you as far as how fast you want to get there. As a passenger you are just watching the driver and enjoying the ride wherever that may be in the vehicle the driver chooses. It is a great tool in being still. The perception of the path you choose is only affected by the needs and expectations of the driver. You are both the driver and the passenger wanting to share each other. The reality we make is in becoming the perception. Does one’s perception of reality affect reality? I think it all depends on what side of the vehicle you enter on. So yes and no.

How does the media influence your perception of different cultures and groups?

To be honest. I don't really get my opinion directed by what the media shows. e.g. the media would show an image of an anarexic girl and present her to the public as someone who was beutiful. girls would see this from an early age while they are of the age of easy influence and will suffer to try to attain what they see in media. many of these problems are things they would not and should not need to go through, but because their perception of beuty is altered by an industry. they ebcome unsure of themselves.

The same goes for different cultures. my answer may not be what your looking for but, i got absolutely no problem with any other culture. they are all interesting. im a mix of quite a few different cultures and im thankful for that. i can understand from different viewpoints and i dont really have the mentality to just look at someone and make a judgement without knowing whats deeper. i know from what iv observed that its not a good idea to form an understanding based on what is seen in media. i prefer to figure my own things out. one of the things i find rather demeaning is how the media has brought about a definition of "acting white" and "acting black". is this really a good thing. people who are black do not want to "act white" by which the media portrays as getting an education. this is stupid, and white people do not want to "act black" by which means living out of a hood in general. all these media portrayals are what is the cause of so much racism and hurt amongst people. id rather not pay any attention to them. a race is not a behaviour. i behave my own way.
i view other cultures of countries as interestign to me, but i take what i hear and try to find out the truth in it. the media just presents at image to me. im the one to make the judgement on what it is.
Good luck and God Bless

How do your attitudes affect your perceptions?

Apart for each persons attitude that projects beyond themselves but to others around them, I think it also alters our perceptions..

Everyone knows the glass half full half empty exercise... When the glass is 1/2 full you perceive life with enthusiasm and pleasure... when it is empty you wait for the other shoe to drop. Going beyond those obvious observations that everyone can make --- It is also true, I believe in self-fulfilling prophecies.

When you believe something will happen - your actions - those you are consciousof & the ones that are done sub-conscienciously -- fulfill those directives.

Life happens to all of us - and that includes good and bad events sometimes out of our control & sometimes very much in our control. Happiness & pain translate forward in our lives as we grow and whether we want to or not affect our perception.

I used to be very trusting - going with the notion that everyone is basically good and trustworthy - and it was only if something happened to prove differenty that I needed to react. Unfortuneately - or fotuneately -- again depending on how you look at it ---my belief system and values were put to the test. I was in harms way and trusted - only to be abandoned and betrayed.

Looking at this now - It was a good thing - had I not felt the depth of pain and be living through some of the hardest moments in my life - I would not have altered my view on trust. It is something that is earned and valued. It is a gift that people give each other. When it is earned it is valued. My perception of people has changed . I do not see people I meet as anymore than what they are at that moment. I let their actions demonstrate whether or not I will let them into my inner circle. I do not let the sugar-coated words play a role in my perceptions --- but look deeper into the actions and energy through their efforts they put forth.

Hope this kind of answers your question... and good luck on your report!
